hey guys A friend just invited me to go to Bern, Switzerland. I'm down, going in the middle of August. What fun stuff is there to do in Bern and the area? I've already stated that I must see Eiger, and we will be hiking this tour: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-se/eiger-trail-the-swiss-alpine-experience-trail.html Are there any other good hikes in the area? Which we can get to by train, as he doesn't have a car. For novices, I've done scrambling but not actual climbing. My friend is super afraid of heights and honestly... not in great shape.

Somewhat closer, there's the Creux-du-Van which is a pretty rad cliff face (again, easy hike) at the border of Neuchâtel and Vaud. Also not too far, there's the town of Gruyères which has a decent cheese factory (for Gruyère, naturally) you can visit, as well as a nearby chocolate factory in Broc (~20 minute walk between the two). The HR Geiger museum and the chateau in Gruyères are also pretty weird and neat, respectively. The chateau is a little less interesting if you've been a lot around Europe before. In Bern, if you're lucky on timing, you can go see the Young Boys play with balls in Wankdorf. E: You can even Google this without losing your job. The ascent to Eigergletscher is not dangerous, there isn't really any spot where slipping will cause you more than bruises and it's not too physically exhausting either. If he can run 5k it should be easily possible.

Saladman knows a lot more than me as I've only been down there a couple times, so maybe my advice isn't so useful, but just a couple notes: Jungfraujoch is fun but expensive and VERY crowded, especially on the trains back down in the afternoon. Most of the train ride is inside a tunnel, but it stops at viewing platforms a couple times on the way up if you want to see the glacier etc. The view from the top is very nice though so I don't regret going. So far Interlaken has been my favorite region of Switzerland to visit so I'd definitely check it out while you're nearby. On the north side of one of hte lakes (I'm pretty sure it's Thun) there are some surprisingly nice caves (St. Beatus-hohlen), which if you're into that can be a good way to kill a couple hours, especially if you're unlucky and the weather is bad, and they also have a decent restaurant overlooking the lake which was nice. If you take a guided tour I think it takes 90 minutes, although if they let you I'd recommend doing it guideless - we spent about 2 and a half hours and got lapped twice by guided groups, it just seemed like they rush you through.

On the 14.+15. of August there'll be a Streatfood festival in Bern at the PROGR http://www.progr.ch/en/ if you wan't something to do in the City. There is also a good bar and cafe there where a lot of people hang out. Until the 23. there is an Open Air Cinema on the "Grosse Schanze" http://www.saltcinema.ch/en/bern.html Just wandering around https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_City_of_Bern will let you see some nice stuff. I don't know what interests you have but I can recommend more if you give me some pointers.

Yeah, christ, every time I read the newspaper (even international papers) it's about someone drowning in a river in Switzerland. Speaking of, I had taken this photo from 20 Minutes a few days ago because it was so outrageous. Look at that janky-rear end "bridge". I bet it's slick as hell too.  [Brief translation: British person dies in mountains / An excursion ended badly for a 49-year old hiker returning to the Cabin of 10 by the "Goat's Path" route on Monday. This British citizien fell when he was traversing a raging river on a plank. He was taken some meters, then was smashed under a rock. The woman accompanying him could do nothing to save him.] One other thing in Bern you should check out that wasn't mentioned before is the Paul Klee museum, unless you really don't like early 20th century art at all. There's also a butterfly exhibit (? not sure what to call it) nearby in Kerzers, called the Papiliorama that I've always heard good things about though I've never been to it. Go around the lake of the four cantons as said before, it's a must see in my opinion. In Bern, you should go see the Parliament building. Then you could go visit Geneve/Lausanne/Montreux around the lake Leman. In Lausanne, there is the olympic museum if you are interessed in sports. For hikes, the canton of Valais is a nice place, with a tons of hikes to do, from easy to hard ones. http://www.valais.ch/en/activities/hiking Enjoy your stay in the beautiful Switzerland
