NO THAT'S NOT ME!!

Someone give me a better thread title. Please. Holy crap.

Trion Worlds link
Trove on Steam

What is Trove?

Trove is generally called a combo of Minecraft and Cubeworld, maybe with a bit of WoW mixed in. Take the world-building and crating aspects of Minecraft and combine it with open world exploration, dungeons, interesting enemies, customizable equipment, and nearly a dozen unique classes, and you kinda start to get the idea. The game apparently was in alpha/beta stages as of last November, but recently came out as free to play on Steam.

What makes this game different?

There's actually a few neat things that I really like about this game. For starters, you can break down old loot and save the way it looks for later. You can then apply those templates to other items and customize the way they look. So maybe you've been rocking that neat beanie hat for a while, but then you lay the smackdown on a dungeon boss and he spits out some ugly looking cat ears that otherwise blow the beanie out of the water. Instead of tossing your cool beanie, you can break it down, then apply the look to the cat ears. Win-fuckin'-win! This lets you make yourself look the way you want to, and not exactly the same as every other schmuck who got the cat ears before you.

Not only that, but you can design skins for pretty much everything and submit them to the devs via their Reddit, and if it gets approved, it'll become an actual item in the game. Some people will scoff at the idea of getting your fan base to make art assets for you, but personally, I think it's a neat touch for the game.

Another cool thing is that as you complete quests and level up, you'll gain cubits, the game's version of money. You can use this money to unlock new classes and switch between them at any time by pressing J, or going to the changing station, for free(after the initial unlock of course) any time you pass one by. This means that you're not stuck in one class, or if you make a mistake and end up starting with a class that's totally against your play style, you're not SOL. You can also spend real world money to buy these, but why the hell would you do that?

Aside from that, combat is easy and pretty fast paced. One thing that always turned me off about lots of RPGs is having to queue up tons of different skill combos and make sure I hit everything in the right order. This game has a very simple, but effective combat system. Every class has a passive ability, a standard melee attack(M1), a class attack(M2), a class ability(1), and an ultimate attack(2). The latter two are locked until you level up once or twice, but it's really easy to go up the first couple of levels, so it's no big deal. You can also add other items, like bombs, to the hotbar to bind them to the R and T keys.

Wait, did you say 'Free to Play'? What's the catch?

Actually, the cash shop in this game is really tame. Pretty much everything in the game that would give you an advantage over other players can be bought with the cubits I mentioned earlier. Pretty much the only thing that can't be bought with in game currency are "special" skins/versions of the standard things you can buy, and patron time. Patron time gives you a few different boosts to things like exp gain, crafting speed, magic find(how often you get upgraded loot from bosses), and movement speed. Really though, there's nothing that a patron can do that a regular player can't do just as well.

You mentioned classes. What do we have to work with?

I haven't played most of the classes yet, but a bunch of them look really promising. Let's go with a quick overview:

The Knight:

"The Knight is a durable, armored fighter that wades fearlessly into melee combat. Charge your enemies to close distance, but if things get messy, your ultimate will restore your health and let you shrug off blows with ease."

"The Dracolyte is a fire mage who commands the might of dragons. Use your flamethrower to charge up your dragonling familiar and if you get into trouble, use your ultimate to transform into a powerful dragon. "

Class Attack: Spit Fire

- Capable of destroying blocks
- Charges up after 7 hits, multiple enemies will charge this skill faster, uses very little energy
- Attacking "Dragon Idols" can charge up the familiar
- Familiar Puffs up, plays a sound effect and glows when charged
- This skill can hit twice, the total damage of 2 hits is around 7-8 times the damage of a normal attack
- Deal low AOE damage around ~2x2
- The charge doesn't seem to fade away if left idle

That's some neat class design. What about stuff to do in game?

Aside from playing dress up with the billions of different loot items you'll find around the game, you can also run around with friends and kill dungeon bosses on every world. As you explore the map, you'll find towers popping up and giving you quests to kill this boss, or activate this thing, etc. etc. If you do them, you'll be rewarded with more rare loot. There's also bigger boss dungeons that pretty much require a group to complete, if you're on the appropriately leveled world.

You can also join a clan, known as a club, and enter their own unique map to use their shared resources and be a house-buildin' carebear if you so choose.

There's also crafting. Like, a ton of crafting. You go out into the world and gather resources by finding nodes of ores, completing dungeons, buying stuff off other players, and finding things in chests. Then you go back to your house plot or your club world and you craft it into rings, loot upgrade items, decorative blocks, and a bunch of other stuff to improve your character, your house, and your world. There's too much to really get into here, but it's pretty neat.

If crafting, dress up, and care-bearing it up in the club world aren't your thing, you can also team up with up to 8 people and go run Shadow Arenas, which are instanced boss fights that drop the best gear in the game. I haven't actually gotten that high a level in any specific class yet, so I don't have much to say on this one, sorry.

Sounds neat. How do I sign up?

Unfortunately, the only way to actually join the Club is to get invited by someone in game. If you post your name here, I'll friend you and send you an invite if I see you. I'm neogeo0823 in game, by the way. As we get more members, I'll add more names to the OP so we have extra people who can invite in. I'm typically playing in the evenings, Eastern Standard Time, and the club is called The Dongol Hoard.

While I'm thinking about it, if you have anything you want added to the OP, post it and I'll shove it right on in there.

It's been keeping me occupied for the last few days. There's a decent number of players right now, and the developers do seem to be adding new content fairly regularly, so I'm hoping it'll keep expanding.

I know there was a thread for this back in November when it was still in closed beta. Just looking at it back then compared to the game now, it's like night and day, what's changed.

EDIT: Well, one of the devs gets props for letting this into the game:

Nobility is sadly overrated.
Just a heads up we still have an active thread in games. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3731628

In saying that, game owns and is fun to play in big or small bursts. I do hope they add SOME kind of pvp though, but its not urgent.

While not unplayable it's significantly weaker than its description implies, and doesn't scale very well. It's in need of a big rework.

Oh, of course there would be a thread for an MMO outside of the MMO board, and it would be active, and I wouldn't go looking for it any time in the hours I spent writing up the OP of this thread.

Ice Sage is quite good at what it does. Just keep your shield up and enjoy excellent DPS and crowd control. The M2 attack is a little bit annoying to target and use though, given it's slow speed.

Seconding this. Put a big, giant warning on Gunslinger until its fixed so people don't waste their money on it. It doesn't help that it's passive (float when you do damage) often breaks, and when it does work you end up with the camera stuck in the ceiling.

Also, you don't have to get to a class changer to change classes anymore, just press 'j' and it'll bring up the class change window anywhere since the most recent update. Your OP seems to think you still need to find one to change classes.

The fastest way to get an invite is to add your name to the invite spreadsheet, found in the OP of the active post in Games. The officers watch that spreadsheet for new people to invite. Might be something worth adding to this OP.

IIRC, 5 or 6. Apparently most people make their own club world as a personal project, then bookmark a few other clubs belonging to their friends.

In other news, I was gonna edit the OP last night, but poo poo got busy and I only had like an hour to unwind before bed. :corsair: After talking with people last night, we'll likely use this thread specifically for the MMO parts of the game. Things like club world listings, keeping track of who belongs where, keeping track of invites, and maybe somewhat coordinating group activities and the like. Frankly, I probably won't get to doing all the editing until later this week/the weekend, but that's the direction this thread will be taking.

If by "personal project" you mean "place to store poo poo when your personal chest gets full", yeah. (Every club world can have an officer chest [only accessible by club officers and leaders], a club chest [accessible by all club members], and a community chest [accessible by anyone who happens by.])

No witty YOGSCast Spin off name for a similar game? I'll sign up when I get home from work!

Get to the games thread, there's a spreadsheet you add your name to in its OP. Add your name to it, and get online. Get in TeamSpeak and request you be added. Someone will do send you one. Congrats, you're now playing with goons.

Fun will now commence.
Decent game, and indeed fun in small bursts. Apparently gets grindy as poo poo later on, but considering it's vaguely P2W I'm not surprised. Either way, the art style is cute and endearing. Just don't expect super-deep combat or systems-- the game is even more "pretty-pretty-princess: The Game" than GW2.

There are valid complaints to be made about this game, but what about it, exactly, is P2W? You can buy boxes that have game mats in them, but those don't really add up to much unless you drop hundreds of dollars. There is also no component locked behind a paywall. Anything used in-game to change the in-game experience can be purchased with the in-game earned currency. (classes, flasks, emblems)

If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Patron gives you extra jumps so you don't need them on gear or your companion, which technically gives you an extra slot for a useful stat. Pretty minor though, overall the game has a pretty good F2P model.

As much as I hate patron bonuses and cash shoppes, a F2P game needs to make money somehow. At least the patron bonus isn't something insane like +100% drop rate on everything. +200% MF is nice but not horribly gamebreaking considering how it is only +200% on a .1% drop or something.

Patron also gives +50% experience, but that only gets you to 20 faster, it doesn't help get your shadow gear at all.

Edit: Nevermind, didn't realise there was an established Trove thread in Games, gonna fish for a sign up to their club. Sorry!

Nah, it's cool. Instead of making this thread into something that will, frankly, have very little substance, I've decided that it works well enough as it is: A somewhat modestly done intro thread that will help point potential new players to the games thread and get more goons in the game. It seems to do that pretty well.

Oh, let's break it down!

I tried this briefly in closed beta, and never really did anything. Now that it's out for real I want to check this out again, but my Trion account is locked behind an authenticator that I no longer have access to. So now I wait for Trion to remove the authenticator and hopefully not want my birth certificate, mother's SSN etc like some companies..

Edit: Nevermind I just made a new Trion account.
