Roderick on the Line is a wonderful audio show about infrastructure, architecture, music, philosophy, raising a little girl, and the great question: are you the listener a Roderick or a Merlin? A "Roderick" is the type of person who loves to read True Thesauruses, develop substance abuse issues in late adolescence, study histories of wars, run for public office, and ruminate with a sub sandwich in a bathtub about their personal failures. A "Merlin" is a manic to the Roderick's depressive, more likely to laugh in the face life's absurdities than cry, with an equally broad but shallower intellectual curiosity, more self-doubting and self-punishing than autoantipathic, and a very good listener.

Mr Roderick has been pursuing the obvious endgame of podcasting (a run for Seattle City Council) which will end or not tomorrow, with the primaries. A new batch of episodes will the forthcoming or POSSIBLY NEVER HAPPENING CAUSE HE'S TOO BUSY after that. Just kidding, he's going to keep podcasting forever, his campaign manager assures me. Just kidding, Tom won't answer my calls any more.

For those of you who have been furiously clicking 'refresh' on the iPhone's lovely podcast program, you've got two substitutes from the last couple weeks. Roderick guest starred on one of Merlin's other podcasts, Back to Work. Benjamin proves an even more subservient conversational partner than Merlin, and lets Roderick talk for like two hours, just loving forever, which is great if you like I could listen to Roderick talk for loving ever.

EDIT: looks like it's been archived.

Also, it doesn't look like Roderick is going to win:

As of this post, he's only got 15% of the vote - his opponents have 49% and 29% respectively.

Just started listening to the new podcast with Dan Benjamin. They keep saying that people comment on the show saying that the dynamic between John and Dan is different than with Merlin. I do t really see that. They're both sort of high voiced nerdy dudes who let John talk for awhile and interject with questions every once in awhile. Which is fine! The whole point of the shows is that they're platforms to hear John tell stories, I just don't find them to be that different. I'm up to the podcast where he talks about how he was a gently caress up all throughout school and the cause of it was thinking that play money he was given for doing a good job in third grade was not ACTUALLY real money. That was kind of a bizarre story to me.
