Goons, here is your chance to solve a historical mystery.... Last week the British Library made a public appeal for historians, medievalists and military enthusiasts to decipher an inscription on a sword dating 1200-1300 AD, probably made in a German state. It was found in a river in Lincolnshire, east England in 1825 and no one has yet deciphered the inscription. The BL has put the sword on public display and has asked for help to decipher the following inlaid inscription: +NDXOXCHWDRGHDXORVI+ The leading ideas are that it is a religious invocation and possibly a saint's initials. Hope you have some medieval Latin... Background info and photographs here: http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/digitisedmanuscripts/2015/08/help-us-decipher-this-inscription.html
