Kind of a weird one, but: LET'S PLAY: I first heard about the Experimental Gameplay Project on G4TV's Attack of the Show. Every week, some kids at Carnegie Mellon would publish a new rapidly-prototyped game, and my friends and I would devour it. The "project" was essentially a semester-long game jam. It's weird: as much as I loved the idea of goofing around with a quick game idea that was built as a result of a competition, I never get into or follow the "game jam" (or whatever) scene. Maybe I should. Hell, maybe we could make one by the end of this LP. These games are mostly toys. Videos will be short. If anything, this is just going to be me recording a nostalgia trip with my buddy from high school. That's fine, right? These games came out in 2005, so one of the biggest problems I'm going to have with this whole LP is figuring out how to run older software that was shoddily slapped together in a week. And I'm just now realizing how many tutorials I could be writing if I figure out how to get some of these turd-y .exe files running. The Games Expect a lot of eye shadow. A neat idea A lot of these games have scoring system that doesn't really mean anything if you can't challenge people to top your score. So, I suggest we try something that I tried with my, uh, ill-advised NES Remix Let's Play, and create leaderboards for games that are deserving of them. It might breathe some life into these projects that could have benefited from more online infrastructure/time. Let's work on that, team. LINKS:

Tower of Goo by Kyle Gabler http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/towerofgoo.exe VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWRDE4SzQpc Of all the games in this collection, Tower of Goo demands the smallest introduction. Created by Kyle Gabler (you are going to see this name A LOT), this game hit 100,000 downloads in a single month. It's easy to understand, fun to look at, and contains a decent challenge. After Tower of Goo blew up, Gabler went ahead and made Tower of Goo Unlimited, which accomplishes what you assume. Gabler went on to form 2D BOY (World of Goo) and Tomorrow Corporation. This whole EGP thing worked out for him. Sean and I sat down and recorded a few of these games with the help of: Drinks! The canned IPA on the right is really, REALLY fantastic. Find a friend in Kansas City and have them ship it to you. Oh, or, um, I could ship it to you? Is that legal?

I remember these! My computer never had strong enough hardware to properly run them all. I'm really excited to see how this turns out and see some of the games I hadn't been able to get to run.

Somehow I never really knew about any of these. Crayon Physics and Petri Purho's games from Kloonigames were more my jam.

If I am remembering correctly the things that the goo balls are saying are actually sped up or sped up and reversed swears.

I'm not an audio guy at all, but I slowed down one of the longer goo ball sounds and got this. No idea what it could be saying. CAUTION: the audio is loud and squeaky.

I tried reversing that, it certainly isn't the solution.

Flip Out! by Kyle Gray http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/FlipOut.exe VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ujCZnn0M-M I figured I'd edit and post the last video we recorded on Saturday so it appears like we sober up once I edit and publish the second to last update. But, nah, for real, this game is actually kinda neat! It's a fairly simple flash-based game where you have to draw an efficient path through tiles. Kyle Gray went on to make Henry Hatsworth and now works with Gabler at Tomorrow Corporation. This is the first game I'm showing that has an ill-fated leaderboard. SO, take a snapshot of your high score, and I'll post it here. Leaderboard

Attack of the Killer Swarm by Kyle Gabler http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/swarm.exe VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riCESdmjA6w Sorry for the video glitches. I'm not sure why that was happening. AotKS is pretty simple. Nothing too special. I like that the swarm's idle animation probably uses some sort of gravity well code. I don't know how to make games, but I assume you just right click on the swarm and left click the "make this a gravity well" option. A lot of games coming up use gravity as a general theme.

On a Rainy Day by Shalin Shodhan http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/rainyday.exe VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgY9I-vFsyA This is a game that I actually wouldn't mind hanging back and playing on a rainy day.

Back when these games were new they had this little php board. So, remembering back to that is when the swearing in tower of goo came from. I will try to recall other things but not all the games had really active boards. One of the things that happen was people were posting high scores when attack of the swarm came out. And someone posted a 42,000+ score. And people were all How?! What?! And instead of getting mad or outright calling the person a lair Kyle explained how the game worked. The explanation was that. There are 210 things in the swarm, each thing can add 1 unit of upward force once per second. It doesn't matter what the gravity is in this case. There is no air friction. And then the board slowly worked out that launching from ground level the max splat you could get was 210. And other people worked out that if you got lucky and just slightly picked them up and then hit them with a column of swarm you could get up to around 218. With the method of concentrate the swarm just over a person's head and slightly twitch down I use to be able to regularly get in the 208-212 range. But this is all I can do in the 15 min I just tried. Sadly I have nothing for On a rainy Day. Other than it is a cute little game.

Boogie Dan by Kyle Gray http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/BoogieDan.exe VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krVPF8tSZI4 Boogie Dan Is Not Programmed Very Well. No, but seriously. Why does Billy show up so often in these games?

Particle Suck! by Kyle Gabler http://experimentalgameplay.com/egp1games/particlesuck.zip VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUTjck9QPrc Particle Suck! is a really simple toy with no music. I found some creative commons, or whatever, music to put in the video. Gravity wells are really common in this set of games. Also, if you like this movie, this guy, this girl, or this guy, or this girl, you should ~*watch*~.

I'm really enjoying these quick looks at the early experiments of some of my favorite indie developers. One of the upcoming games (unsurprisingly pertaining to gravity manipulation) was directly referenced in Little Inferno so I'm looking forward to seeing what that one's like, especially because these have all been amusing concepts with impressive execution considering the time constraints so far.

You commented about black holes and event horizons. The radius of the event horizon is directly related to the mass. So, if a black hole had the mass of Earth the event horizon would be about the same size as a basketball, With a mass of the Sun it would have a diameter of 5.91 Km (3.67 miles). For there to be any substantial change in the event horizon and the gravity an extra star of some size would have to run into it. Have a little calculator for fining the size based on solar masses Edit: I have seen a game that used this style of toy. The game had a minigame that required you to power up towers in a city by manipulating the beam. And it used charge(s) instead of gravity. This reminds me of an old Tron like game. It didn't have these circles, it was quite literally Tron, but it shared the two-button controls. It was full-screen and the greatest thing was that it let 6 people play at once. 5 on the same keyboard, and one using the left and right mouse buttons. And when the game was over, a message would appear in Hungarian or something weird.
