Calculating Infinity
"It is an unsettling move at this stage, a kind of ageing-swinger version of tactical innovation. At one point in his classic Rabbit novels, John Updike sends his paunchy, middle-aged anti-hero Harry Angstrom off on a slightly sad wife-swapping escapade during a golfing holiday in the Caribbean. Alone in the bamboo chalet, Harry and nice prim Thelma fumble through their belated moment of 1960s swing with an awkward married tenderness. Eventually, a little desperate, in search of something special and exciting to do, they end up urinating on each other in the bath.

This is pretty much what Arsenal’s back three seem like: confused, fumbling, spreading across the chest like a hot, sweet flush of ammoniac regret."

This is about the most accurate paragraph:

"Something seems to have been lost around about the time the man who introduced internationalism decided the right thing was to have a “British spine”. Exit the creaky, flighty, high class midweek Carling Cup types – the Carlos Vela Supremacy – who for all their frustrations always seemed to have a brilliant midweek hat-trick against Reading in their locker. Enter a creeping, well-behaved mediocrity."

With reading in the championship it was probably for the best that they moved on. Surely the British spine was there from the beginning though.

UEFA's trying a new rule in youth tournaments: switching up the penalty kick order. Instead of it going AB AB AB AB AB, they're making it go AB BA AB BA AB.

The problem they're trying to fix is that teams that go first win 60% of the time. They're trying to even that out.

is that not just because the pressure on the 10th kick taker is higher than all before? this change doesn't solve anything then

no, it's because most of the time, the first taker in any given pair has less pressure and more incentive than the second taker.

first taker is usually in a position to put his team ahead and inflict stress on the other team's taker.

second taker is almost always just trying to catch up, so the incentive is less positive and the stress is more acute. after all, his alternative outcome is that his team falls behind.

the article does a better job communicating the research behind these things

I’m not going to tell you that Christian Pulisic’s performance in today’s Borussia Dortmund-AC Milan friendly—in which he conjured two assists, won a penalty, and eeled his way past famously big and bad Serie A defenders more times than you could count—means that the Wonderteen is primed to take the leap from solid and promising young prospect to legitimate and inarguable superstar this year, nor that his impending breakout 20 goals and 20 assists will make him a shock inclusion on the next Ballon d’Or podium, and definitely not that, behind this silky American’s talents, Dortmund are practically a lock for the league-cup-Champions League treble.

Really good piece by Football 365:

A Love Letter to Ian Wright

quote:

Michael Cox wrote to me to mention this – the footage isn’t available.

“There’s an absolutely fantastic section of the programme ‘Something To Nothing’, that was in the original YouTube-only film but sadly left out of the ITV broadcast (and the original is now gone, sadly). He talked about how, when he was a kid, his step-dad was horrendously abusive, a horrible bully. He refused to let Wright watch MOTD, despite the fact Ian was sleeping in the living room as he didn’t have a bedroom. So he would have to lie, facing away from the TV, hearing MOTD but not allowed to watch it. So when he was first a pundit on MOTD he was overcome with emotion that he’d made it there. ‘This is my Graceland’, he said.”

I mean, good god. This can be such a cruel world, sometimes. And it is also worth pointing out that when we are harsh or criticise someone’s performance on TV, or in any walk of life, we do not know the struggles they’ve gone through to be in that position, nor what it means to them to have done so. I suppose what I’m saying is, football should celebrate our collective humanity, not try and negate it with witless abuse.

Adrian Chiles is a broadcaster and writer
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/oct/26/what-happened-to-myfootballclub-ebbsfleet-united

quote:

What happened to MyFootballClub – the club where fans decided everything?

Ebbsfleet United’s takeover by an online community in 2008 made national headlines but the dream quickly turned sour as reality bit and interest waned

“Being a passionate football fan I’m pleased I didn’t gently caress up a football club. I was always very careful, I didn’t want to do anything too reckless because I know how important football clubs are to people. I was never going to do anything that was going to put that into jeopardy. That was an achievement. It could have been an absolutely monumental car crash and it wasn’t. We didn’t create absolute mayhem, which is what some people predicted.”

It was supposed to signal the dawn of a new age of football fandom. Although there have been plenty of imitators, Ebbsfleet United will always be the first professional sports club owned and run by an online community. With more than 32,000 members at the height of its popularity, MyFootballClub offered a form of wish-fulfilment for football fans. It was the chance to be a hybrid of manager and chairman – sanctioning transfers, choosing the team, propelling a little-known club up the league pyramid. It was a fantasy for armchair experts, but one which never quite became reality.
