Sometimes a cat or a dog just isn't enough. For some people, they need to pick something weird. This is the thread for that. Post and/or discuss exotic pets. The owner doesn't need to be visible in the image or video, content just needs to be of someone's pet. Hybrids of domestic and wild species are OK as long as they look cool. Servals They're these weird cats with long legs! Look at those cool ears. They're also capable of jumping pretty far, and will play fetch like a dog would, so they're not very cat-like in behavior. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdbSnmetciU Hedgehogs Apparently these are getting more common now? They look easy to take care of but I don't know how sharp those spines are? Anteaters Look at this lady taking care of this weird thing that eats ants all day. These things look dope as hell. She has two of them and they live inside her washing machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtrimZxRXBM goose willis has a new favorite as of 07:20 on Sep 25, 2015 |

Pneub posted:Actually not that sharp. Yeah, it takes some real trying to get hurt by them. Good thing, too; I had to carry the little buggers out of my parents' house when they decided to wander in through the back door. Not quite pets since they were wild animals that my folks just fed (although some of the younger ones were tame enough to let you pet them), but this was the view from our back porch most evenings:

goose fleet posted:That is adorable! Do they smell bad? Not really, though these were outdoors - they'd have to make a pretty heinous dump to make our backyard smell bad. I imagine you'd have to clean after an indoor hog quite often, since they don't poop dry pellets like rabbits etc. A couple more:

I think this is about as extreme as you can get for exotic pets:

I have a guinea pig and it's so exotic that my South American neighbors keep trying to eat it. I also have to take it to an exotic vet. It's a normal clinic but the vet is dusky and had a vague accent.

They dont smell like anything as one of their natural defenses. All of mine came from breeders and were disarmed there so they cant spray.
|
# ? Sep 28, 2015 03:39 |

And they don't spray nearly as often as you'd think. If they are a pet, basically don't get really loud and back them into a corner.

How do they act? Can they do tricks?

Some can. I saw a pair at a skunk show where if he made the hand signal like holding a gun and said "bang" they would pretend to be dead. Most of the time they just sleep and eat and want to chill near or on you. They are headstrong though so its hard to train them most of the time.

You shouldn't have them as pets until you get at least an Emerald Collar from the casino. Do you really want to spend hundreds of hours grinding rep for RPG REFERENCE?

Is it possible to just chill with a pet skunk and cuddle it for a long time? They look like very calm animals.

Yea thats pretty much all they do, the chillest animal. Theyre also super puffy so its some pro cuddling. That and when its cold out you wake up with like 6 skunks jammed all around you in bed keeping you warm too is the best.

You can with ferrets as well, when they decide it's time to chill out there's no other option. I once opened the sleeping compartment in their hutch, one fell out, landed on the floor and did not wake up. That sounds like it died, but it didn't, it just kept on sleeping even after a fall of a couple of feet, that's what I am saying. It did die a few years later though, RIP Larry you were too good for this world.

The most exotic pet I had was one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2al94JCwDgs They are mean motherfuckers, scary and won't ever think it twice before trying to bite your fingers off. They also grow really large, and people over here like to hunt and eat them.

What do skunks eat and how long do they live? How about that angry turtle?

Not sure if this is as exotic as you're going for, but I've raised a number of mantids and jumping spiders over the years. Jumping spiders are cool, curious little bastards that like to make hammocks all over the place and chill in them. Mantids are pretty fun, and have a habit of staring at you while cleaning their claws. They're also pretty brutal to their prey, although surprisingly friendly to people. The thing is, you wouldn't expect it from insects but they do have different 'personalities' in that I've had mantids that are more curious, or more aggressive, or more lazy than others. They also have these crazy multi part mandibles that are just so alien to watch in motion. Sorry but no pictures of my jumping spiders, they were usually too small and fast to photograph properly, or otherwise were hanging out in their hammocks in obscured view.

Spiders and mantids are definitely welcome! Mantids are creepy as gently caress and I once saw one on my window at 3 AM and wondered how it managed to climb so high since I'm far from the ground

I have one of these, a ball python: (not mine, but same pattern) People are so freaked out by her but she's really gentle. The only thing that's slightly weird about her is having to clean up her skin (also the fact she eats live mice). I've had her for like 20 years now, and if you're not freaked out by snakes or the circle of life, they're great. They don't make a lot of noise or smell, except when they poop.
