Pittsburgh is stored in the balls.

That's right goons, it is time for the election that only old people and personal friends of candidates remember, the off-off year elections! Vote for school board, city commissioner, and more importantly for Pennsylvania, the State Supreme Court!

Why do you care about the State Supreme Court?

Well, for one thing the elections are for 10 year terms, so for the 3 open slots (out of 9) it is going to define the makeup of the court for a long, long time. But even more important than that, in PA the gerrymandering is done by the Supreme Court for State legislature. That means whoever controls the court can very easily determine who controls the state legislature.

So go out and vote for some judges today (and your school board, constable, etc). This thread is for discussion of Judges whose names we need a partisan voting guide to remember even though we've had to see their adds on local tv, and for how awesome your local dog catcher is.

I'm going to vote for mayor today, and maybe some other stuff too.

I finished voting! There was no one running against the incumbent in my city commissioner ward, so I voted for myself as a write in because I don't like her stance on some things, though I do like her stance on the deer cull. I was debating putting in Lizard People but it seemed like too much effort.

The democratic process works!

The voting machine has a straight ticket button to save you a bunch of time, apparently.

(that said, it also asked if I wanted to vote yes or no on reappointing people I'd never heard of to courts I assumed were important)

I'm voting for a few things today. The new Dem nomination overthrew the incumbent, who was pretty bad (listening to him was very much like listening to Trump talk). I'm hopeful he'll become the new Mayor, as the new guy's an environmental scientist who's gotten the city a bunch of grants in the past, and seems to know what's what in terms of actually helping the people. When I voted for him in the primary I didn't actually think anything would come of it, but he won by only 220 votes.

A lot to vote on in Virginia today.

The state senate is up for grabs. Currently the Republicans have a 21-19 advantage.
The house of delegates (Virginia house of reps) is also on the ballot. No chance on that flipping. Currently Republicans have a 67-33 advantage.

John Oliver had a good segment about the elections happening today and how they relate to the impact it would have on states expanding Medicaid

I walked to city hall and voted for the gay man for mayor. The only other thing on the ballot was choose 2 out of these 4 names for city council.

It was still a paper ballot but this time it's being counted by scantron. Two years ago they were counted by hand.

I didn't vote today! (and neither did most anyone else!) My opinion? SSC seats likely to stay in Republican hands, e-mail scandal a bunch of nothing and Kane might be an incompetent Abe Lincoln lookalike (which is tough to pull off as a woman) but ought to be allowed to serve out her term.

edit: Or not? Did the Philly mayor race and porn scandal really result in an off-year Dem sweep?

I don't see how any of the Republicans survive at this point, there's such a large lead and 77 percentage of the votes have been counted.

edit: Not sure where the OP is getting the whole "gerrymandering done through the courts" thing from. I had been under the impression that they just stepped in when there was a deadlock. Granted if Wolf wins a second term there just might be a deadlock between him and the inevitable GOP majorities.

For those who don't follow PA state politics there has been an ongoing scandal involving state judges, most of whom were Republicans, and a related one involving the Democratic AG. The judges and some other legal fellows had been sending pornographic and otherwise "bad" e-mails on state and private computers. I think I heard reference to some sort of racist joke in one maybe? It was more of a "one upping" deal rather than them seriously trading jerk off material but thats not exactly better. Its been gradually trundling along for over a year now with more and more stuff being revealed. About halfway through it turned out that the AG leaked some of the info about it to the Philly paper and she's been indicted for that and almost lost her job over it when people argued that with her license suspended she was no longer a practicing AG and thus couldn't be AG. Regardless of who's wrong or who's right (they all suck) the whole legal system is, looking at these results, incredibly unpopular. Kane probably won't even make it out of her primary next year and one of the big Republican targets just lost his judgeship tonight.

edit: And in the time it took to call this the AP called the race for the Democrats. Wolf will be happy I guess but its not like I can recall any real stinkers out of this court recently. They ruled that Kane could keep her job a few months ago, practically saved the Office of Open Records (in a decision that I didn't agree with legally even though I am happy it turned out the way it did,) and forced a less egregious rewrite of the original 2010 state senate maps for being a violation of people's rights.

There is no chance Kane will be on the ballot for AG next year, and at the rate she's going she won't even be elected dog catcher in PA. It seems like every day she's in another jam, just recently one of her staffers was being sued for sexual harassment or something. The smart thing is I'm guessing the party is pressuring her to stand aside and not run for re-election next year so she can quietly ride off into the sunset. Josh Shapiro has been rumored to be looking at the office, but he just won another 4 years at the county in a landslide, and IMO he will hang out in MontCo till 2022 when he can run for governor.

Kane may try to give it the old college try, but she won't have any support because she will be vulnerable in the general, and the primary too. A relatively popular republican state rep has declared he will run, and I think very soon a few dems will do the same.

If the democrats control redistricting, expect ALOT of seats to flip after the next census, including congress and state senate, many of which republicans have creatively drawn around Philly suburbs to keep them competitive, and not a democratic blow out. (I'm looking at you PA-6,7 and 8)

New Jersey also had its State Assembly elections, with Republicans trying to cut into the Democratic majority. Instead they lost 3 seats, giving Democrats 51 out of 80.
