I've got a lot of free time on my hands lately so I decided I'd take up a new hobby and making music has always interested me. However I have no idea where to start. The only software I know of is fruityloops and I have no idea if that's good for starting with, or even any good at all.

So... Any suggestions?

e: I was kinda surprised there was no stickied resource thread.

I don't know what areas of making music interest you, but if you are thinking in the direction of making beats / electronic music, Nanostudio is pretty great; it gives you 2x synths/samplers and a drum machine. It's free for Windows/OSX, I think it's $5 for iOS. It's nicely designed, very capable, and won't overwhelm you with a billion options.

If you have a Mac, Garageband is a great entry-level program and it's free. Tracktion is another decent easy-to-use app, you can download Tracktion 4 for free (current version is 6).

FL Studio (aka Fruity Loops) is a solid program, and if you're not averse to spending a little $$$, Ableton Live Intro is a great value.

You can probably find about a million hours of tutorials on youtube for any of these programs.
