hey japanese music thread, what's a thing you've discovered in 2016 that you think is cool and good?

my pick is Seiko Oomori, a singer-songwriter doing exprimental idol-pop with a punk-ish kick

I discovered Plastics in 2016, and I think they're definitely cool and good.

Their debut album is pretty good, but apparently whoever owns the rights to it doesn't like YouTube, so YouTube mostly only has low quality VHS clips from shows or TV appearances.

The one-finger keyboard solo on "Digital Watch" is one of my favorite things

Love Plastics, shame they only made 2 albums but really what else did they have to say? Hell, the first album nearly said it all. Great band.

Hello goons I bring you J-rock. Shiina Ringo already got a lot of praise in this thread so I will skip that and link some songs from 2 bands that have survived on my winamp playlist since I first heard them. BUT FIRST, at request of the thread a band I found in 2016 that i liked.

8.0syoooogeki ( 0.8秒と衝撃 ) - Dual lead vocal band 1 guy 1 girl, they are like a more coherent melt banana or something like that? Very loud/hectic/thrashy. They rule.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5ZSoWX8gB0

Ok now the the 2 bands I really like. First is GO!GO!7188 , 3 person band female vocal. They are retired now but they have a pretty big discography to get lost in.

They covered a wide range of styles over the years, but a lot of their songs fall in that surf rock area. Their 4th album was a huge departure from their normal style and it feels very much like a winter theme album, always makes me think of dark, winter days when I listen to it.

Here are a few of my favorites from them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDlSSy4pC0w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2iEzqozN3c <-- 4th album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY5iDYnJQuo

They also own at covers, their cover albums are always great and here is one my favorite

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R1lGvweCpQ

They also own at getting covered!! After they announced their retirement they released a tribute album with a bunch of bands covering their poo poo including this k-rad polysics cover

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhUGZUlp-Pw

Other bands included on the disc are Shonen Knife, MONGOL800, Detroit7, and The Neatbeats

Second band is a cool indie rock band named TSU SHI MA MI RE - 3 person all girl band

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKa_xcrdGwo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nbbCMtCzs0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS9aNM9J6IY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=603FkEnMBOw

Their early stuff can be pretty weird, but they rock.

GO!GO!7188 was great in concert, I saw them twice in Japan, you can see how good they are in any of the lives uploaded to youtube. They seriously kick rear end live. Tsushimamire was also a very fun concert, they tour in the US! I saw them in a small bar after Crash Kings & The Captains, who covered a bunch of 60s songs and wore sick outfits.

Definitely Seiko Oomori. I had heard of her before but for whatever reason just never got around to checking her out. Turned out that Tokyo Black Hole is just too good of an album to ignore. Easily one of the best albums of the year. Now I've been digging around the rest of her catalog.

She's a powerhouse. Incredible songwriter. It's hard not to love that she's used the idol image as a masquerade costume for her subversive tendencies. Her general feistiness resembles the spirit of early Ringo and Togawa (as well as recent Togawa, surprisingly...what an unexpected zombie comeback year for her).

She's already back in the studio, too. loving relentless. No word on what it's for, though.

Also made a last minute discovery of BPM15Q at the very end of December. They're a blast.

I thought RoST were a one-song deal for a video game, but it turns out they've released two albums. Here's one of them:

It's a relief to know they play with terrible bands in the UK as well.

Seeing Melt-Banana live should be a requirement as a human being if they play within 20 miles of you.

Melt-Banana is one of very few shows I've been to in Japan where the crowd made it feel like a show in the States. (That's a good thing.)

I've been listening to Swing Slow, a one-off album by Hosono and Miharu Koshi. It's an interesting combination of country and western, traditional pop, and 90s electronics.

Uh, I have a pretty specific question and I guess this is as good of a place as any to ask it.

Every once in a while, I see the song "WOW WAR TONIGHT" by "H Jungle with t /" referenced, and I don't really know the backstory to what was the deal with it.
From what I've understood from my limited Japanese knowledge it's some type of cult classic or something, that sold a lot? Haven't found any info in english.
Video of song: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x10mw2a_h-jungle-with-t-wow-war-tonight-pv_fun

Some covers:
Ayumi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC5bBTlKh9g
AKB48: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avZwOOyHtIk
AOA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AecI4tgb-TA
and there's a ton of less known artists covering it as well.

Anyone could give some insight in what the cultural significance is by this song?

Something to do with Downtown / Hey!Hey!Hey! Music Champ, if you're familiar with those guys or ever watched that show. I haven't seen it since I used to watch it back in the early 00s, so I don't recall. Maybe it was the theme song or something. The show was super popular, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. If you look through the related videos there, you'll see a video of Hamada (from Downtown) singing it.

e: ah that's also him in the Dailymotion link. I hadn't clicked it

Ah, a little more info on his wikipedia page.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masatoshi_Hamada#Music

quote:

In the 1990s, Hamada was also part of a musical duo with Tetsuya Komuro called "H jungle with t" (ja) (where the "H" stands for Hamada and the "t" stands for Tetsuya) and produced several songs, including their most popular song, "Wow War Tonight", which sold over 2 million copies and ranked number 2 in the top 100 Oricon singles of 1995.

It seems they made a popular song, carried by their fame from TV, and performed it there a few times, then it sortof became a cult hit or something. Cool to know.
