I'm only 24 going on 25 so I didn't hear the band until around 2009, but RoC is my favorite album of all time so the expectations are impossible. If I had heard this when I was discovering them I probably would have put it on In/Casino/Out level. As an adult I'd say it's better than Acrobatic Tenement but clearly below everything after that.

I find it disappointing because when I go back to the old stuff, it still manages to surprise me with unexpected twists and turns going on (partly because I haven't listened to a lot of it since the early 2000s). This album doesn't really do anything surprising or unexpected or left-field, it just kinda sounds like an interpretation of someone's vague description of what ATDI should sound like.

Decent enough analogy. I really like all the singles they released plus one song, but the rest I don't think I'll bother to listen to again

I mostly like Torrentially Cutshaw above anything else, and then I read a review that said it was a retread of Cosmonaut... which happened to be my favourite track from Relationship of Command.

This is ghastly. Cedric's vocals at the end of the first song are hilarious.

I'm 26 and got into ATDI like a decade ago, after I'd already been into The Mars Volta for a couple years, so it's not like I'd been waiting for this since the day RoC dropped or anything. I knew going into it that it wouldn't be RoC, but then again, nothing is except RoC. That said, this is pretty good for what I expected it to be. I wish there were some drat backing vocals though. And that there were some slower or at least different tempo tracks. But there are several great songs on the album.

I like it. It sounds like the album they would have released in 2003 if the mars Volta didn't happen.

Would it be wrong to say that the Antemasque album is a better At the Drive-In album than the actual new At the Drive-In album? I feel like it’s got a better hit to miss ratio & more energy & diversity than Interalia does.

I mean it's not like either one has Jim Ward, but at least Antemasque has Flea & has more going on in it. It's like if The Mars Volta made a succinct prog/punk album. It's certainly more memorable than the last couple Volta records, and every song sounds pretty distinct, which is more than I can say for Interalia.

For those that dislike the album, do you at least like the 2-3 singles released prior?

I think my issue with the album is that, the more I listen to it, I realize the singles they put out before the album are far and away the best songs on it. Like Governed by Contagions is seriously one of my favorite songs they've ever put out, and Incurably Innocent gets better every time I hear it, but they kinda blew their load too early because several of the other tracks on the album aren't nearly as powerful as those.

Those are my sentiments exactly. The 3rd one was decent enough, but the first two singles are amazing and if you told me released in 2001 or w/e I'd believe you

It just sounds like an overproduced, soulless At the Drive-In album that didn't need to come out. It doesn't sound like Omar or Cedric really wanted to make it anything special based on what I've read and heard from them.

I hated the two singles, but I actually kind of like the whole album now that I've gotten to listen to it in entirety. Paul's bass sounds great, which I missed until now.

I will agree with the previous poster that it's an album that didn't need to exist, though.

Edit: Like if this came out on Ipecac as one of Omar's 90 albums that were found on his hard drives, I'd believe that.

They're the musical guest on Kimmel tonight. Set your DVRs! Or, you know, just wait til it goes up on YouTube and watch it there.
