So, this is on the holiday Steam sale; worth picking up to play the campaign and noodle against the computer?

Yes it is, the campaign is lengthy and along the lines of games like Xcom, just cause you loose once or twice is not a game over, and there are some challenge modes for the skirmish against AI

CUPOLA MY BALLS
I bought this yesterday and the campaign is destroying me

I just had a mission where i had to steal data plans from a ship. I did this, and as I was escaping, the plans were stolen back and the chaos ship warped out within about a quarter second and I lost the mission

Considering nobody in the game warps that quickly and there isn't some hidden WARP NOW button, I'm gonna go ahead and guess you just didn't have any assault actions ready to go after you got thieved from. Never blow your last assault action in a date recovery until you absolutely need it. In fact, it's preferable to just try to blow the ship carrying the data up unless it's in the process of warping then and there - you don't fail, and can just putt over and pick the data up yourself. Against the AI this also has the benefit of making the enemy drop everything it's doing and try to recover the data that is now floating in space, meaning you get a bunch of easy hits with next to no retaliation.

Just be patient and play the long game in keepaway missions like that. You'll find it's pretty easy to cheese the AI.

No, it played the animation for the chaos ship warping away, then I got an audio notification that the data was stolen back, and then I lost. These happened at the same time, with no time to react. I had only used an assault action with my light cruiser, my cruiser was still good to go.

You can trigger a warp out, then use Lightning Strike just before it finishes and your ship leaves to steal the data with no risk of them taking it back.

I'm pretty sure I changed that back to data after it autocompleted, so now I'm a little worried about that one :ohdear:

Sure, a player could, but the AI would never do this . If a Chaos ship in the campaign mode was warping out of a data recovery without having the data, then it was because it was insubordinate and wouldn't be able to take orders anyway. So I dunno what happened to chutche but it sure as poo poo wasn't anything as in depth as this.

No, the AI definitely does this. Really well, as if it fails it can cancel the jump at the last minute.

Replayed the mission and warped out as soon as I got the data so everything's good.

Anywhere I can get some guides? I'm able to handle Chaos pretty well but Orks keep destroying me. Keep getting rammed to death. I'm still early on so my biggest ship is a Dictator. Bombers aren't as effective here as I remember them being in tabletop.

Right now, my standard 300pt loadout is a Dictator, Dauntless, and Cobra.

Bombers work fine against Ork ships, especially against their escort. Just ram and bomb all their escort, then focus fire or kite the line ship to death.

I recommend not replaying missions you lose, because the campaign is actually really good at allowing for losses, especially on key story missions.

CUPOLA MY BALLS
Any advice on kiting the orks? They're faster than my IN ships, and with most of my guns being broadside it's hard to make use of my front armor. They outnumber me and it seems like their battle cruisers and battleships can take way more punishment than mine unless I repeatedly light them on fire.I have better shields by far but my guns are doing fuckall to their hulls. Bombers help but I end up using my fighters more to hold off these giant waves of bombers and boarding torpedos.

Chaos, traitors, and Eldar are easy for me to deal with in this campaign, but I consistently lose against orks in large point games where they can spam cruisers and above. In smaller games I usually can come out ahead.

Nov 15, 2012

You need to out single out and focus fire orks. Always keep your ships in a group and target engines first, once you've killed a ships engine disengage from it and go after another ork ship. This way you can break up the giant blob of ork ships into a few separate ones. Never under estimate imperial ramming, armored prows and brace for impact means they can ram with the best of them and ships that have low alpha or DPS can be used to quickly ram a chunk of health off dangerous targets.

It seems to be on a case-by-case basis. I've had the game since release and never noticed any bugs, and that isn't usual videogame supporter hyperbole either. Flip side, a bunch of goons in this very thread posted photographic evidence of some nasty physics bugs and save loss and stuff like that until around the time Tau dropped. They've done quite a bit of patching though, so if you're interested it's probably a safe bet to grab it now.

Killed the ork warboss, and I've killed 3 of the battleships. Just hit chapter 5, should be smooth sailing from here. Only playing on normal and chaos has ~20 worlds, but no exterminatus yet. The only time I lose to chaos is timed missions because they easily run away from everything but the light cruisers even when boosting.

I went space marine and extra teleporters on my light cruisers. Cruisers are a mix of inquisition to help identify, and admech. Larger ships are mainly imperial navy, though my Mars is admech I thibk.

I went with the other battleship.

Finished the campaign, been trying some multiplayer. Tau is some ridiculous easy mode, I have a level 4 tau commander. My only losses were once to another tau, and later to an Eldar with a really solid hit and run gameplan who killed all my escorts one at a time and escaped. I've been doing fire caste with boarding mantas, and getting the deflector shield and seeker missile upgrades.

Ran into an ork player that had a wall of ships making GBS threads out nova cannons and torpedos the second I deployed, then mass rammed whatever was left when I got close. Was pretty brutal. I think it was a battle cruiser behind a wall of light cruisers, an assassination mission.

They all play pretty much the same except for the Eldar, just try to ram people while not getting rammed and if you have a range advantage, hold onto it. Haven't tried Tau though, but they probably sit under the range advantage category.
