Prior to August 2015, there was absolutely zero sound support in Hurd. Then this guy (initials RMH ) put out a patched mplayer "using the Rump kernel embedded in a library and then directly linked from the multimedia program" https://lists.debian.org/debian-hurd/2015/08/msg00010.html So theoretically sound works but only from this specific version of mplayer. I followed his instructions but mplayer does not see any audio devices. Could be a problem with VirtualBox, idk I tried playing a video too but that didn't work either at first Then I tried manually selecting a video output mode, and found out that "dga" works! It played a .webm (encoded in VP8 ) downloaded from gnu.org just fine (no audio of course) So far I have to say this isn't too different from your typical Linux experience. Dare I say that Hurd might be.........usable?

jony ive aces posted:lol @ the shameful hurd developer not writing it as "gnu/linux" that wouldn't make sense. Hurd is a kernel. Linux is a kernel. so saying "Hurd is not Linux" is entirely accurate. Hurd doesn't replace the whole GNU operating system.

modern operating systems stop you from doing dumb things. but what if you could do dumb things? would that be great or what? -- RMS

It can probably work the port of Rogue that's in most of the debian repositories no problem, unless running a BSD program from a Linux distro inside of a Hurd-based OS is too many levels of sorta-UNIX.
