this is a question of reference frames

for the table, the food is on it. for the food, the table is under it. for the third party observer, it is dependent upon the point observed.

neglecting the medium, light will travel at a speed of c onto both objects simultaneously.

the food will see the table moving slower through time, and the table will see the food traveling slower through time. the third party observer will see both the food and the table traveling slower through time.

or like some kind of contraption where the table retracts into the floor and when you press a button it comes up and unfolds itself. Then you could just set the floor and push that button, and you'd be putting the table under the food instead of you putting the food on the table

in some cultures there has been a traditional belief in "the underground people", who would essentially be blamed with everything bad happening. as a result, people would drop offerings of food or drink on the ground for them, so that they would be appeased and thus not screw you over
