I was watching simpsons at 0.75 without knowing until a scene where homer and bart were getting back massages at a hotel and the noises they were making were super drawn out like a youtube poop

Basically the last 2 or 3 years have seen a whole bunch of AMD powered NUC sized computers hit the market. Some of them can even do light gaming.

Thanks for all of that! I never posted ITT about it but I ended up going for a SER5 Beelink. It's been such a little treat to use.

the deskmini x600 is going to be amazing as a work pc if you can put a 7900 non-x in it

most often you'd stuff an 8600g in it since SODIMM ram speed isn't good enough to fully utilize a 8700g

NUC's make for some of the best gaming servers around. Its silly how good they are for that.

Hi all, this is my first SA post. I'm in the Saskatchewan Canadian tundra and am wanting to build a new TV living-room SFFPC.

Will be used for media/same-screen (co-op and sports) gaming.

Currently using one I built 6-ish years ago (SG13, 1300X, 1060 6GB, L9a) that has my heart, is quiet and has treated me well but isn't keeping up for living-room gaming.

I've been reading this thread since last summer and these posts from June are particularly interesting: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=1&threadid=3776587&pagenumber=135&perpage=40&highlight=L9#post532439526

Already purchased a Fractal Terra Case.

Thinking 7800X3D. Could get another L9a and undervolt CPU if the L9a is lacking. This would leave more space for GPU options in the sandwich Terra.

7800 XT for GPU maybe??

I'm lost on MOBO.

TLDR;

Looking for advice/suggestions on MOBO/GPU that would pair well with the Terra case, L9a(?) and 7800X3D (undervolted if need be).

✨sparkle and shine✨

Those NUCs are a trickier get in Canada, alas. The cheapest Beelink SER5 on newegg.ca is $409+tax and is via a 3rd party seller which always makes me a little uneasy.

Something used off eBay might be a better use of that budget, but NUCs are kinda having a moment right now so there often isn’t a ton of supply. This one looks decent, maybe? 8h left and 2 bids, so will probably be higher in the end.

NUCs cost a premium for their compact size, so a small office desktop that fell off-lease might be an easier fit for $400.

Never mind, I was a bunch behind.

The engine, code A855, has a cast iron closed deck block and split crankcase. It uses an 8.1:1 compression ratio with Mahle cast eutectic aluminum alloy pistons, forged connecting rods with cracked caps and threaded-in 9 mm rod bolts, and a cast high

Pick your gpu and then depending on thickness pick your cooler. The terra has pretty bad turbulence issues from what I've read, so I would personally choose a cooler that is 5mm or so below your max height allowed. The asrock b650i seems to be the sane budgetish pick? I got my msi b650i for cheap and it has been solid. Asus if you want the nicest of the am5 boards. Steer clear from gigabyte this gen from what I've read.

Ordered 7800X3D

Thinking ASRock B650I Lightning Wifi Mini ITX for 269.99+CAD but I want good sound USB > DAC > AV Receiver > 2 giant old speakers.

Should I instead get the Asus ROG STRIX B650E-I GAMING WIFI Mini ITX for 428.50+CAD ?
Would it make a difference audio-wise?

You probably get more out of spending the CAD 160 (or less?) on a good USB DAC but someone else or audio threads here will have more specific advice.

raring to post

if youre gonna use an external dac, the board model doesnt matter for sound quality as long as you have enough USB ports. youre bypassing the built in sound hardware and DAC completely and streaming a digital signal from the OS over USB to the external DAC, so as long as the USB port works, youll be gravy on that front.

Alternatively you can use HDMI to your receiver.

I use my onboard GPU HDMI port to feed audio to my receiver. This gives me all the channels of sound I desire with no extra hardware. I am limited by the age of my receiver (no Atmos) but it was "free"

Notably HDMI is the only way to output surround sound to an amp without compromises. Optic cable is the next best option available from a regular motherboard, but it only does compressed 5.1.

Thinking IS-55 w/ A12x25 for cooling CPU

I will now look on the MOBO <s>SQL</s> QVL Memory list and try to find a set that is <=33mm in height.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AUDIO BABBLE: It's two giant old wood speakers from father-in-law combined with a Yamaha RX-V383BL amp.

Current setup [Current Ryzen 2600 has no A/V from MOBO] GPU > HDMI > TV > Optical Cable > A\V amp > 2 speakers

Will try (New Asrock MOBO > HDMI > A\V amp > 2 speakers)

and/or (USB [From small internal USB sound card if it will fit] https://www.sotm-audio.com/sotmwp/english/portfolio-item/tx-usbexp/ > DAC > A\V amp > 2 speakers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cooler fitting babble:

Pulse 7900 XT listed dimensions:
Length: 313 mm
Height: 134 mm (From what I'm reading, it fits at the 131 mm slot positions)
Width: 53 mm
Width (Slots): 3 PCIe-Slots

Fractal Terra GPU/Cooler support as shown: https://support.fractal-design.com/support/solutions/articles/4000194849-terra-cpu-cooler-gpu-support

For CPU Cooler the popular way is IS-55 with Noctua A12x25 fan and hopefully I can keep the fan 5mm away from side panel to avoid turbulence noise.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Edit: Low profile 6000 Memory for QVL doesn't seem to exist in Canada. I guess I'll just go with what the builds on pcpartpicker that use this MOBO with a 7800X3D use which is the G Skill F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
Timings of: 36-36-36-96
GSkill has always treated me well, so I think I'll go with ^ kit.

The only other LP kit I'm really seeing is the Team Group CTCED532G6000HC38ADC01 or CTCWD532G6000HC30DC01 Timings of: 38-38-38-78

Sincere thanks again, everyone. I've ordered everything.

Hey, Johnny, what's a "shitpost"?
I built my current PC in a Terra and cannot imagine cramming a 7900XT in there. But if it does fit I want pictures. :stare:
