I would've preferred the windows 95 look. At least then colors let you know what they gently caress you're looking at, but now everything is white and there's no borders on the windows. It's the style nowadays and it's loving with my eyeballs. Your UI windows? White. Websites? White. Your applications? White. And it's popular to use subdued colors like grey instead of black, solid colors without gradients, etc. Why can't I have contrast? Why do my eyeballs and brain have to work harder to do what used to be thoughtlessly easy?

If you can imagine; someone is asked to come up with a design for the new UI, perhaps they are a graphic designer or illustrator. Perhaps they collaborate with some other type of designer or team of other designers, then they draft up something that looks really fantastic on paper or as a static image - its sleek, its different but not totally alienating, so it gets the go ahead.

However, once it is coded and you actually have to interact with, and work with or around the interface doing things that people actually do on computers, like have 100 tabs open in their browser or alt tabbing between a game and social media, while also having open a bunch of documents and pictures which they should be doing something with but are procrastinating to do other poo poo, then suddenly it isn't really as good as they thought.

Really, the whole idea of a desktop is flawed because there are so many people who don't organise their desks in real life, so why would they do it here? So often people including myself are digging through piles real paperwork on the desk to find a certain item, and they do exactly the same thing with their virtual Desktop. Just force their files into a hierarchy - pictures go in pictures, documents go in documents, everything by date day year, everyone conforms to the same system, but not like Macs which seem to try and make it look like a hierarchy doesn't really exist.

I don't know what my point is anymore :words:

The problem is that Microsoft want to be like they were in the 90's - on every modern device, with the most features, the driving force behind business and consumer PCs alike. The problem is that this isn't possible, least of all for a gargantuan company with fingers in every pie and a very long history and list of compatibilities to satisfy with every release. They messed up with Windows 8 precisely because they tried to make their dumb accessible interface for babies with tablets the same as their user interface for bored business users who need to use web apps that only run on 15 year old Windows browsers. Didn't work, ended up pissing just about the entire planet off, and just adding more bloat to an already bloated product. Whereas other companies like Apple drop compatibility for older applications in a fairly structured and sensible manner, the horrible business users Microsoft rely on insist on still being able to run ancient crap, meaning that your copy of Windows 10 still contains multiple compatibility layers (including in the browser) so a bunch of accountants can still run their ancient software without an issue.

If Microsoft were to say 'gently caress it, we're stripping out all the compatibility junk, we're only testing software/hardware from the last 5 years, and it's for desktops only', you'd probably end up with something pretty drat nice.

Why would the fact that there's amazing backwards compatibility be a bad thing though? What would be different about Windows 10? The last version of Windows that I remember constantly crashing (when it really was a terrible OS) was Windows ME. Windows XP killed a lot of backwards compatibility by getting rid of DOS and other than that, I'm not sure how getting rid of backwards compatibility would ever improve the OS?

Honestly I think that's a huge reason people stick with Windows and if they started doing poo poo like Apple does where a version of Photoshop stops working because it's from like two OSes ago, people would probably stop using Windows.

I actually think they made a huge mistake dumping Windows Mobile for Windows Phone. I don't know why it's goony to point out that billion dollar companies don't know what they are doing, because Windows Phone has been doing terribly. I've never in my life seen a commercial for any app that said "available on ios, Android, and Windows Phone". Literally never.

Anyway, my point is Windows Mobile was really popular when phones like the HTC Touch Pro 2 came out. I loved that I dumped my standalone GPS's exe files onto my phone and it actually ran. And there were like 15 years worth of software for Windows Mobile at that point. Any if its limitations would have been cleaned up when phones started coming with more RAM and I honestly think Windows Phone would have been a lot more successful if they kept using Windows Mobile/CE instead. I was able to find every type of app you could imagine, and that was back in 2009. Not to mention, the interface was very familiar as it closely resembled the regular Windows OS. I could very well be completely wrong that it would have been more successful if they stuck with it, but Windows Phone is an incredible failure.

You're totally right. If Microsoft had:

1. big financial incentives to make every app on the apple/android also on a windows app store

2. Made their phone the IT issued business choice, (maybe by partnering with blackberry back when every company gave its employees blackberry phones)

-then they could have had a chunk of market as the practical work issued smart phone that plugs into a business IT environment and played that off Apple like they did with windows.

Imagine if they'd had exclusive "drag and drop all your secure Microsoft office docs on and off your phone from work" in like 2007.

It's a bit late now lol

I've been using Windows all my life - I don't like 10.

First of all - it updated automatically. I didn't agree to do it and I've had poo poo to do, but no, Windows had to update at that moment.

It came prebundled with memory leaks - memory usage doesn't get down below 70%, CPU usage below 50%. I've got SSD, am running a web server, editor and a browser and NOTHING else, yet apparently it's not enough. Windows 7 was fine on the same configuration and I really don't need some fancy UI poo poo - I want to just do my job.

Everything requires some additional action to function, or doesn't retain the same functionality as before update. You want to connect via Putty to bookmarked severs? Well, gently caress you! You want to save anything in root folder? gently caress you again! You want to delete a file? Have a popup saying that it couldn't delete some Chinese gibberish from System32 (I'm using Total Commander, because I've grew up on Norton Commander and it's faster for me to use it instead of Explorer). Want to edit hosts file? The procedure is - open Notepad (because TC edit stopped working), navigate to hosts, click to display *.*, open hosts, edit it, find out you have to do it in administrator mode, repeat all the steps. And you can't switch for the Notepad to always open in administrator mode, because reasons. Oh, a new update! And suddenly root folder is full of mvc files, because, again, reasons. That goes hand in hand with nothing being deleted from Temp folder (or folders, because now there's apparently 532 of those) - to the point where my home machine had 16GB of wasted space thanks to that (I know that 7 didn't empty Temp folders as well). Want to send images in Mail? Oh, you don't have Windows Live account? Well - here's an error that doesn't explain anything but if you google it, you see that's what you need to have to send images as a gallery. And apparently attaching multiple images is different to dragging multiple images to an email (because in first case they'll be saved as attachment, and in second as a gallery you need account to send). You want to search for something - cool, first use this search at the bottom of the screen, and then after it found what you've looked for, and clicked on it, use this second search it has opened and with the same query IT JUST DOESN'T FIND GIVEN THING. Oh, you've had Java disabled? Well, let me enable it for you! Which version you want to have enabled, because there are 5 (I know that at least isn't MS fault), wait, let me enable first one in the alphabetical order.

It updated itself on my mom's machine as well - now I've got to do support job, because it enabled a WiFi connection that was disabled (for reason) and then started switching between one connection and the other, so she would loose internet every ~5min. WiFi connection to her printer stopped working altogether. She gets notifications about updates, and she just doesn't know what to do - today Microsoft Windows Defender (which is disabled, because it cannot be enabled, because there's an antivirus - ESET NOD32 running, and I don't loving know how these two things can't run together when dealing with different things) had to close Mail, because it had to update itself. It didn't require to close the browser, it didn't require to close anything else - just Mail.

Tragically Microsoft produces things that are just not user-friendly for standard user (or suffer from some major design flaw). Till 10 I was fine with not using them as there are always free alternatives, but in all seriousness, with 10 I'm more and more committed to switching to something else, because it's first OS that's actively fighting with me on every step.

tldr; Windows 10 is just delightful :allears:
