You know that thing where you sleep on your arm funny and when you wake up it's all numb? Yeah that's my whole world right now.

I'm interested in hearing and talking about Tales of Great Transformational Change. For the sake of completeness it could even be quitting the rat race and forming their own hippie commune. Success comes in many forms, all that's really required is that the person is following their dreams.

Oh hey, a thing I did.

So me, my fiance, and our roomate were living in a really expensive yet lovely apartment in Everett WA (yeah go look that up. Go search "Everett tweaker cam" on YouTube.) I had previously owned a massive corner-lot house in suburbia in another state, and before that I lived in a farm town. While the city ia fun I really don't like living in it.

Shortly after I moved in the other two roomates we had decided it was a good idea to let the local junkies and non-working friends of theirs move in because--surprise!-- they got evicted from their place. People were constantly coming and going. The door was being left unlocked.

On top of living with a suddenly large group of people in a tiny apartment we had our roomates' new friends stealing and breaking stuff. A month's worth of rent money disappeared, and we were only notified that the electric bill hadn't been paid when it got turned off.

The whole thing loving sucked so the three of us decided to GTFO. Apartments close to our jobs were way too expensive for us and I had always wanted to live in a housebus. We decided it was a reasonable idea and started looking for one we could afford. During a drunken night searching Craigslist and bitching about our other roomates we found a 2001 New Flyer transit bus.

A week later the three of us were driving the bus to our first camp site and tearing out the seats. We decided that we wanted to find a piece of land to rent by the end of summer. We spent a couple months driving between county camp grounds, RV parks (gross and crowded) and casinos (honestly a pretty cool place to rent a spot for a week). We needed a landlord that wouldn't mind us working on the bus on the property, had space for the bus, and somewhere that was cool with renting to three weirdos. We also hoped to find a place with good neighbors and a nice community. We figured our ideal place would be very hard to find.

A few weeks ago a very nice old hippie farmer emailed me. She said that she might have a spot for us to rent but she was very nonspecific.

We met up with her and it turns out she's starting a commune sort of thing. She has an absolutely massive beefalo farm, a small orchard, a stream with water rights, chickens for eggs, boxes of bees, and unused gardening space. She's in the middle of building a ring of cabins to rent out to likeminded people. We worked out a deal to pay rent and help her build stuff and work on the farm. My fiance is a mechanic, our roommate is a carpenter, and I have farm/homesteading experience so we're a pretty good start to an intentional community.

The bus is now nestled in a nice little clearing on this awesome farm. We have space to work on it, time and money since we don't have to work so much to pay rent, and a really cool home and community we can contribute to. We have places to hike, fish, and camp. Our dog has endless running space. The three of us can lead our quiet little hippie lives without getting bothered by tweakers.

These days we eat meals with the landlord and her family, spend time swimming the creek (cold as gently caress) and help out where we're needed. We just installed a wood stove so we won't freeze to death when it snows, and we're clearing out some underbrush for a hangout area. Our Mennonite neighbors down the street are nothing but friendly and helpful. In November we're slaughtering two beefalo. We chop a lot of wood. I'm going to start attending town meetings because I really care about the future of this town.

Life is about a thousand times better than it was a year ago and I'm confident that the community will do well.
