I watched a half dozen episodes of Patlabor tonight! Finished up the Serious Times, and they were rad (though not as rad as the first time Noa kicked Bud's poo poo in). After came the stream, then last Friday's episodes. All good silly comedy Patlabor, especially the bathouse ep and the Seven Days of Fire ep.

And: due to Droyer's insistence that Friday's eps (11 & 12) are of VITAL IMPORTANCE to stream, we're going to do those Thursday (at the normal time), when folks (including myself) are more available.

Episode 5: :stare: don't get noa high on painkillers and then make her climb the giant robot, jesus guys!

Episode 6, well, it was very cute :3:

Those were some fun episodes, despite Noa clambering around on heavy machinery while on medication

Tonight's drunk ep was great. I think both drunk eps are among my favorites.

Yeah. At first Kanuka and Kumagami felt like they were just being kinda snippy and rude at each other, but their little spat built into a real riot. Ota wound up getting thrown out the same window 3 times in a row, and it's real hard to complain about that.

Let the record show that Ota only got thrown out of the window TWICE. The first time he fell out of his own volition.

I have nothing but confidence in you, and very little of that.
So is there any chance that the new 10 minute short will lead to an actual new show/OVA? Not sure what the idea behind making it was, but I need more Patlabor in my life.

Whoops I fell behind on my episode writeups again! I intend to catch up before tonight's stream though so without further ado:

OVA ep 7: A fantastic slapstick episode, with excellent comedic timing and a great punchline. Also a fun fact: the title of the episode can also be translated as "Black Tri-stars", which is a gundam reference.

OVA ep 8: The only episode in the series focusing entirely on the maintenance squad, and much like the previous episode it is very funny. The absolutely ludicrous way the situation escalates never fails to tickle my funny bone, but it still had a couple of sweet moments, especially that scene with Sakaki and the kids. RIP all the porn though.

OVA ep 9: Yet another very funny episode. Any time SV2 gets drunk is always really good, and this episode's focus on Kanuka and Kumagami is both funny and does a good job highlighting their similarities and differences. I kinda feel bad for Ota though.

OVA ep 10: I think this episode does a really good job setting up a thriller-like atmosphere, even if it's a foregone conclusion that no one's actually dead and it ultimately ends on a punchline. I also like how the episode showed that despite his personality, Ota has been a positive influence in some people's lives. Overall not as good as the previous three episodes, but still pretty good.

OVA ep 11: The much hyped kitty episode! A slower, more chill episode with a light peppering of jokes troughout. Goma is very cute and the ending is very sweet and heartwarming. I like this episode a lot.

OVA ep 12: An episode focusing on Goto- and Shinobu's relationship. Yet again a slower episode, but this one was more focused on humor than the last one. Shinobu acting super embarassed at the love hotel was both funny and cute, and this episode opens up the possibility that Goto's feelings might not be unrequited. This episode was the big reason I wanted these two to be streamed, it's one of my favorite episodes of the OVA.

Episode 14 was really good. Great art and direction, and I really like how ambiguous you wind up feeling about the whole thing at the end. Was there actually a ghost? Was it just a mix of Asuma dreaming and working through some baggage? What exactly was his relationship with the girl? Do we even know for sure that she's dead? Good stuff.

OVA ep 13: A much better comedy episode than its predecessor. The revenge of the cats was funny, Sakaki being incredibly callous was funny, the crocodiles were funny and the complete lack of resolution is a great punchline.

OVA ep 14: This episode is absolutely amazing. Its visual storytelling is completely on point, subtly showcasing that something strange is going on long before the reveal.

The very first time we see Kashima it is indirectly, through a mirror.

https://jii.moe/EytKI2UAW.webm

In this scene she is framed against the large sea painting behind her in a way which gives her an unworldly feel. We also see her walk away from Asuma and then suddenly being right next to him again in the next shot, as though her movements don't make physical sense.

https://jii.moe/VyQdS38RW.webm

Here yet again we see Asuma through the mirror first, but it's shot in such a way that that isn't obviously the caseat first, implying that what we're seeing may not be completely real.

This child looks very much like a younger Kashima, and she's carrying a red balloon, one of the items symbolizing her.

Yet again we can only see Kashima indirectly in this shot, through the painting's reflection.

https://jii.moe/4yhtB3U0b.webm

As Asuma walks down the steps here Kashima disappears from view, making it seem as though he's been talking to himself. She's gone in the next shot.

I really like the ambiguity of the actual events of this episode. It was clearly not just a dream, Asuma found a second art exhibition post card in his other jacket, and the dates of the two class reunions are different, implying time really did pass.

Finally I'd like to talk about the ending: As mentioned earlier Kashima is represented throughout the episode by two objects: An umbrella and a balloon, both red. At the very end Noa appears carrying a blue umbrella, and Asuma decides to let go of his red balloon, and with it the remains of his attachment to Kashima. Someone in the stream mentioned they expected this to be an AsumaXNoa episode and were surprised it was all Asuma, but I'm not so sure...

I admit I wasn't as big on that ep as y'all seemed to be, but this is making me reconsider. I was left with the impression that it was mysterious for no real reason, but Asuma letting go of his past crush is a fine reason. Also this was perhaps not the best episode to appreciate in a stream, as a lot of its appeal seems to be in how well-shot it is, and stream watching can be distracting. The mirror shot in particular is really neat, and it escaped my notice yesterday.

~Water flowers every day~
Life got in the way of watching Monday's episodes on time, but I just caught up. Episode 13 was a hilarious callback to the sewers episode, and I love the non-ending of the whole crew being stuck underground forever (as Sakaki presumably seals them in with concrete).

Episode 14 caught me completely by surprise. So mysterious, and fantastic directing of all those transition shots! I still have no idea what to make of the story. Did Kashima die and her ghost is haunting/saying goodbye to Asuma? Did he eat the wrong kind of mushrooms in his kinoko gohan and just hallucinate a lot? Was he asleep on his desk the whole time? I'll probably never know, but it was a beautiful episode regardless.

Lets have a good finale tonight!

It is with great happiness I bring you all the final episode recap, as well as some of my thoughts on the series as a whole.

OVA ep 15: Fittingly for the last comedy episode, it is also arguably the best comedy episode. I really love when they go full absurdity, and in this episode they're doing so in top form. All the intentinally bad animation and faked toku movements (which of course actually require really good animation!) are fantastic, and the final twist at the end makes me laugh every time. This episode is also an Ultraman reference. I am personally not very knowledgeable about Ultraman, so I can only imagine the episode is even better if you fully understand the reference. As a side note, I always want to write more about these comedy episodes but I find it hard to write much without explaining the joke, which would be abhorrent.

OVA Episode 16, All Quiet At The Second Unit: Beyond the robots, beyond the action, beyond the jokes, this episode truly encapsulates what makes Patlabor so special to me, and why I consider it my absolute favorite anime. A friend of mine once said about a manga he often reread "It feels like revisiting old friends" and that is exactly what watching Patlabor is to me. I truly love all of these characters in a way I can't quite explain and I don't expect others to fully understand. This episode is odd in a sense in that it both is quite unlike most Patlabor episodes: there are very few jokes and little action, and yet it perfectly captures the essence of Patlabor and what it means to me. It is the perfect way to say goodbye to all of these characters, and a big part of the reason I wanted to do this simulwatch by continuity rather than production order.

I hope you have all enjoyed this simulwatch, and thank you to everyone who has stuck with me all the way to the end. A special thanks to Yes_Cantaloupe and Spiritus Nox who helped stream week after week. If you enjoyed this show but haven't watched the rest of Patlabor I highly suggest you do so, it has a different flavor that compliments this one well. For all of you who fell behind for one reason or another: I hope you continue the show on your own time, and feel free to continue posting thoughts and opinions as you go through it in this thread.

And lastly, until I see you next time my friends: Target, Lock On!

The penultimate episode was a good comedy ep, but not one of my favorites, I think. The references were almost totally lost on me, but the animation was spot on, especially when the robots started fighting like actors in rubber suits.

The final ep was really good though. It was chill, and showed another glimpse of the mundane life of our 2nd Div friends, and I think those sorts have consistently been my favorites. Combined with 14, we have Asuma letting go of one part of his past and beginning to face another. He's growing, and moving forward, and whether he eventually ends up taking over the family business or continues to be a police officer, I have no doubt that it will be because it's what he wants to do. I'm equally sure that Noa will be with him. Him bringing her to the grave shows that he wants her to be an intimate part of his life, and I for one have little doubt that Noa reciprocates that. It was also a good ep for Ota. He got to play role model to cadets, he diligently maintained his equipment, and he kept a generally calm demeanor the whole while. He's grown, though he of course still has a temper. We got one last glimpse of Shinobu and Goto being incredibly relaxed and comfortable around each other. I couldn't say if they'll ever start an actual relationship, but they have a wonderfully chill chemistry, and I ship them. Overall, it was a fantastic episode, and a fantastic way to say goodbye to Pato.

I liked Patlabor a lot. The characters bounce off each other well, and they have a great variety of opportunities to do so: in combat, in their private lives, at the base... I think it's this... lack of focus? though that sounds bad, it's not in this case - anyway, it's a great strength for Patlabor TV, alongside its ample episode count. It's similar to OG anime Sailor Moon in that. The serious arcs and the action were good, heck, sometimes great (I'm looking at you, Noa beating the crap out of the Griffin), but it's the characters that make this a great show. I think I may slightly prefer the OVAs and (first two) movies for serious Pato. But they don't have multiple eps of all my friends getting drunk together.

Thanks for organizing this, Droyer! Pato TV's been on my to-watch list for a few years now, but I don't know that I'd have ever gotten to it on my own just due to its length.

Thanks for watching with me friends, I think this was overall a really good show to streamwatch, and y'all were great to do it with!

Patlabor was a whole lot of fun and I'm glad I kept up with this simul. The action and comedy were both consistently well written and directed, and a dynamite cast really made the whole thing sing - Noa in particular. Noa wound up being one of my favorite Mecha protagonists ever - by the end of the show she's developed into a character who's incredibly skilled without being superhuman, with her resolve and natural talent being sometimes held at bay by impatience or nerves. She's charming, funny, and avoids the the trap a lot of other action Anime heroines I've seen fall into of either being hypersexualized or heavily downplaying their femininity. She's also clearly dedicated to her work and the larger ideals of civil service in general, and plays off the rest of the cast really well. She and Asuma quietly develop into a really cute, if understated couple. Great show, great cast, great simul. Thanks to Droyer and Cant for putting it on, and to everyone else who chatted with the rest of us about it.
