Greetings goon friends This may be the only time in my life I get this opportunity, so why not share it with some beloved internet strangers. My best friends and I were awarded the amazing opportunity to write, direct and star in a pilot for our own sketch comedy show That's me playing an orc. The show is called "HumanTown". I'd describe it as tastefully brain-damaged sketch comedy where every sketch ties back into a growing narrative. Not a new concept entirely but we wanted to do it right. There's a video explaining the idea here We managed to win a contest called comedycoup which enabled it all to happen This was after many years of entering similar contests, loving around, releasing videos, etc. However the catch is... the pilot is only going to air once, at an okay timeslot, only in Canada, and only through the federal government’s network breathing down your neck But hey, we made it work - Its Hittin Canada's airwaves on CBC @ 9:30PM on July 26th (Also same time on CBC.ca, it'll stay up for a month). If you like what you see , I'd love to get some feedback after it airs. I thought I’d start by sharing some things that happened during the whole process, here’s a couple: -I was in prosthetic orc makeup for three 12-15 hour days. not including the 3 hour application process and painful removal process. My makeup artist did Killer Croc in the new Suicide Squad, he said THAT makeup took four artists about twice as long as mine. - There's a gag in the pilot involving a literal dick pic on camera, but we realized we couldn't just grab any old image off the internet due to copyright issues. So we drew straws and one of us had to go to the other room and take several artful snapshots of his boner, which we then reviewed as a group, chocking on laughter - For an earlier contest presented by Comedy Network, we made a racy submission that judges misinterpretted as real: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHBZ-8hMMlY, the video was banned. The chances for a whole season are looking pretty slim so I'm grateful for even just this standalone experience. Feel free to ask me like anything at all, like I said, just wanted to share a pretty surreal experience CubistK2 fucked around with this message at 16:25 on Jul 22, 2016 |

Thanks guys Even if it's just an SA audience of a couple, at least I got the couple For content: Scott Thompson of Kids in The Hall Fame (the flamboyantly gay one), plays a scientist trying to sell teleporters. Things go wrong He was pretty cool to work with. Since, the six of us are pretty standard straight caucasian dudes, he brought up the "plight of the white heterosexual male", a concept I didn't even know existed. It was kinda hilarious talking to someone of authority on a pretty divisive matter and trying not to say anything dumb (which we may have come dangerously close to)

Ha, I'm pretty sure my sketch group applied for ComedyCoup too. We've been on hiatus for a while though. Congrats! You guys are in Van? Need an extra writer with 5+ years of local sketch experience?

If it were up to me, I'd inject a whale-ful of funding into TV show development/writing in Vancouver. There's so much comedic talent here, it hurts. The industry is incredibly bustling, but it's all big US shows/movies (Don't get me wrong they're great, payin my bills for years.) But we're very devoid of good homegrown entertainment The original shows they do write and shoot here are of course guarded by every employee's life. In order to break in, get ready to enter the fiercest queue of your life... So the next best thing is to become a content robot and pray someone gives a poo poo.. BUT! Don't despair! If you wanna write comedy, (in Vancouver anyways), A hardworking dude I've bumped into runs this doozy It's a network of like-minded comedineers/ webseries writers that band together to weather the storm. We REALLY wanted to shoot our HumanTown pilot in Vancouver to reverse this trend. But, we don't exactly have the gravitas to do that yet. The only place that has proper infrastructure (and respect) for canadian content is in Toronto. So we shot in quaint little Hamilton, Ontario. Which to be fair was a great location, hot as hell during the summer though. Especially in Orc makeup, christ. CubistK2 fucked around with this message at 01:49 on Jul 27, 2016 |

Oh believe me I know - I've been in the industry for several years now, and yeah, even for a minor job you have to be with the Teamsters. That is, if you want set work. I know several non-union people who broke in with the casting and office side of things though. I currently work for an indie video game company and I have a movie in development, I just haven't done much comedy in a while. A friend and I are set to shoot several sketches of mine this summer, so if you're interested I'll give you a heads up when we actually publish anything.

Oh man this is cool, I'd love to see this. I doubt that online link works outside of Canada but I'll try when I can.

Gave it a watch, it had some good moments but there were a few things that bugged me:
Anyway, I really like the concept of "DnD stereotypes play a DnD game of ordinary human life" so I hope you guys manage to get somewhere with this. Good luck! If anyone needs a link to the episode I used this: http://watch.cbc.ca/humantown/-/episode-1/38e815a-00a5d23baa6

Can Of Worms posted:Gave it a watch, it had some good moments but there were a few things that bugged me: Thanks Can of Worms! We shot an earlier version of that camera store scene on our own and it always went over well whenever we showed it (which is why it made it way into our pilot). But I agree its basically a gag of "Look at this racy poo poo on TV", And we definitely wanna try and avoid edgy for the sake of edgy. That being said, it was the only sketch that really pushed the boundary that way and it was fun seeing How much CBC let slide Fast food scene is a tossup for viewers, I've had people call it their favorite one and others thinking is boring. I think its just a matter of specific taste for that one. The awkwardness after "declined" I've always been a fan of. Overall It was meant to be a change of pace from the intense stuff Police Lineup scene only got created out of necessity for linking other sketches. And I agree, It really shined on its own, super happy how it turned out As for the DnD, we've also shot a version of that before and we always thought it dragged on. In fact when we submitted scripts for the official on-air special, we really wanted to omit it, but too many producers/hands liked the concept so we ended up keeping it. I think its good, But I would have preferred to open with a crazier bang. (which is why we included that barber scene off the top) If anyone else has any more opinions, would love to hear em!

Can Of Worms posted:The racy stuff didn't add much to the humour (okay, I have to admit, "with a lot of... Porno!" was pretty funny.) The camera demo scene really felt more like "look at this stuff we're getting on air" instead of something funny.

I mostly enjoyed it, OP. I would also have liked to see more of the orcs playing Human DND. I enjoyed the perpetual falling down stairs and the cop's progressively worse mustard stain. Looks like a lot of work went into it, congrats on getting it aired and I hope you can make more.
