This movie would be so much better if it was a total normal kids movie, except it has House of Cards style monologue with utter venom, contempt and hatred to the camera in between returning to the wacky hi-jinks as if nothing happened.

Personally I prefer it to comedic actors who switch to serious dramatic roles, tho.
Besides Jim Carrey (who did really excellent in drama roles), is there anyone else who was really successful at that?

He started out in comedy. Bosom buddies, splash, bachelor party, the money pit, volunteers. Philadelphia was really his first dramatic role.

I'd say Punchline with Sally Field, but that's more because it was a crossover performance.

I unironically like American Beauty but some parts are pretty cringe worthy now, parts with his daughter and that creepy "avantgarde" dick filming dude are especially bad--and noted loving platic bag scene is horrible. But I think it's still a relevant movie and probably one of the best "God drat the burbs are loving awful and life sucking" movies.

Here are some words about American Beauty that probably don't mean much because I don't watch a lot of movies or know much about the moviemaking process...

-American Beauty was an alright movie, but if you're watching it how I think the director/writer/etc intended it to be watched, it's kind of lame. Especially that speech at the end. And even going into the movie completely blind I was really confused about the importance placed on the beginning scene with the videotape and then the long scene later where you see it was a joke. Of course, I read later that the original ending was the kids going to jail for the murder and they just cut that. I mean, how can you just cut the end to the movie like that and not edit the rest of it to make more sense?

-If you go death of the author route, I think American Beauty is an excellent movie if you watch it just as an almost slapstick dark comedy that isn't serious at all. In this scenario the bag speech is just the ramblings of an idiot stoner and then that speech at the end, I dunno, maybe you just assume that right after that he falls through a trap door into hell. The scene where the dad thinks he is watching his son give Kevin Spacey a bj is legitimately laugh out loud funny, even moreso if you can take the whole film as a giant joke.
