  What is this? Hello and welcome to my first LP! This will be a VLP of the Dead Island games: Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptide, and the Ryder White DLC campaign. I will be joined by my co-commentators SkippyGranola and HotlantaMan. Dead Island? Didn't that have.. A great trailer? Yes it did. No, I mean... Oh. That. Yeah. Moving on. What are the spoiler policies? If you post something that spoils the plot, put it in spoilers What are the games? They are a first person melee-focused game set in the fictional Papa New Guinea island of Banoi. You can read more about them here. Wait, this has co-op. Will you be doing co-op? Maybe in an extra video. I want to do the actual playthrough solo because setting up all the recording and everything for a co-op game would be nuts. Dead Island Episode 1

This is a game I went to great lengths to finally get, and then stopped after playing it for a few days because of just how not fun it was to really play. It was really fun for a while and then it just felt really repetitive and that I was just struggling to get through my missions without any help. That said, I'm really excited to see what it is I was actually missing from back then.

I have a confession, I like this game but only for the gameplay, the story is beyond awful and I have HUGE issues with it and people who have played this game may know exactly what I am referring to. Actually just go play Dying Light instead, it's far better than this game in every single way.

As an aside there was a novel based on Dead Island that came out the same time as the game did but its clearly based on an earlier version of the game's plot as some of the events are way different to the book and Riptide itself totally contradicts the books ending anyway. Do not read the book though, its downright bad and not in a good bad way either.

Dead Island is amazing fun, with certain caveats. The story is only enjoyable if you play with friends so you can laugh at it. But the actual gameplay is pretty fun, it's one of the few games with first person melee combat that actually FEELS right. The reach of weapons and enemies generally works out, generally it feels appropriate, you know when a swing is going to connect or not, and when it does connect, it often feels reasonably heavy and meaty. Co-op also adds further fun because clearly no one ever expected the player characters' animations to be seen by anyone, a lot of them are the most broken, janky stuff that you'll break down laughing the first time you see it. The semi-sequel, Riptide, is pure, utter garbage, though. Albeit somewhat salvaged by the new character because he's so obviously untested, his special abilities have a tendency to cause hilarious physics bugouts that are especially entertaining to watch in co-op. I'd also like to note that the melee combat is a LOT less flaily and spazzy with slow, two-handed melee weapons like mauls and bats, than it is with the little sticks and knives. EDIT: Also the porn zombie's name is an anagram for Jenna Jameson, a real life porn star. And the blood pool guy is Ted B, which I think is a really "subtle" way of hinting at Ted Bundy. When I told a friend about this game, I told him I had fun. He assumed it was a good game. I then explained how when my brother and I played, my brother was driving a car when his PS3 froze which sent our little Jeep sailing into the wild blue yonder. I don't think this game is good, nor do I think it's bad. It has high and low moments. The actual fun or brilliant mechanics are mired in the mediocrity, contrasting them worse than they deserve. It also helps that I played as Logan, and his passive boomerang skill is the best thing in the game.

There's nothing wrong with the gameplay, its the plot that soured people, Dying Light spoilers ahead: Crane meets The Mother who is an intelligent Night Hunter and explains to Crane that the virus inside him is mutating and he will turn into what she is, passive by day but horrifying hell beast by night and so the only way to end it all is to set off the Nuclear bombs in the base she lives in, if you do this everyone in Harran dies and everything you have done ingame is made worthless, if you refuse you kill The Mother and escape but turn into a super Night Hunter just as the sun sets. It's basically a lose-lose situation.

The problem is she embodies Borderlands's sense of humor in such a concentrated form. Her dialog is either topical references, random words thrown into sequence, or something dull said in a goofy voice. Dead Island on the other hand... still has bad writing.

Uuuuugh the way you pronounce Maori hurts. Steve Blum attempting our accent is great too, I want him to do more. I'll try and be less spammy with my posts but making GBS threads on Australia is a proud Australian tradition.
