Chill fam, I've talked to and helped dead people pretty often, distinguishing between those and an honest-to-badness demons isn't really that hard.

It's an interesting story actually, because harvest time traditionally and in all lands are believed to be when the veil between worlds is thinner than usual, there are a great deal of heathen rituals associated with not getting bad spirits in your grain.

Usually, at least here in Denmark, said ritual revolves around taking the last bale of wheat, placing it in a clearing, and asking the bad spirits to take it, and once they're in there, getting rid of it.

it used to be traditional to hold a vigil for all saints on october 31st; people would read from the lives of the saints, pray compline and matins, and then go visit the local graveyard to decorate the graves of their loved ones. they might also make a point of visiting and venerating local relics or local places of particular significance to a saint.

the really good poo poo comes in the following two days: hallowmas gives us the liturgy of all saints and, in the anglophone world, some absolutely baller hymnody. i'm pretty sure any anglophone church that doesn't celebrate hallowmas with Vaughan Williams's "For All the Saints" is doing it wrong.

then of course comes all souls' day, the day of prayer for the dead. it's traditional to hold a requiem mass on that day, and if you can find a really traditional one with black vestments, it owns pretty hard. gimme that good Dies Irae poo poo and a homily about the dread of the final judgment and the need for fasting and repentance and i'll be happy as a clam.

Now that's what I'm talking about :haw:

I had forgotten about For All the Saints, going to get it on now. Thanks!

Ways to circumvent the Compact #6: Find a dreaming god and affect his dreams so that they become reality. Hey, it's not like it's you who's affecting the world. Blame the other guy for irresponsibly falling asleep.
For the next week, I probably will be silently complaining, how some imported superficial festival with vaguely worrying themes (from the perspective of a child/youth worker) has penetrated our media in few short years. Our Lutheran version of the All Hallow's Day is merely the candles-in-church for all those who've been called home since last year, plus a visit to the graveyard.

No saint stuff since there aren't any. :dawkins101:

I'll be singing Bach's Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes together with the Lutheran parish choir; this is our present to the Protestant congregation here for the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation (a day which has been declared a national holiday, but only this year!)

Without even knowing what it is we do, that's a bit rash, wouldn't you say?

There is more to heaven and hell than you or I ever dreamt of, Goonratio. I have a long training, and I'm responsible with what I do.

I'll try to be nice; please stop shoving everything into your own spiritual milieu. For Christians, what you are doing is indeed dangerous and dumb.

Yes, that'd make sense if I had indeed SAID WHAT I ACTUALLY DID. Are you really such shut-ins that a common pagan group prayer for the peace of the dead can be interpreted as summoning demons?

It's been around for thousands of years before christianity, if it was as dangerous as you lot would have it to be, the world would have ended ten times already.

This conversation always leaves me a little sad. But it doesn't and shouldn't make everyone sad. Simply put, people do not share the same perspectives of the non-material, and neither are people totally satisfied by attempts at purely material explanations. Without a great change, things are likely to continue this way.

In the meantime, I see no better option than to guard my beliefs and respect what's inside others that's invisible to me. I protect everything I value with my life, and in war time that means throwing myself in mortal peril, but in peace time that means harmonizing the best I can. No doubt that mistaken beliefs have a cost, but I witness too little beyond my scope to be liberally making those calls for other people.

Tias, I haven't witnessed your practices, and that's always going to stop me from saying too much. But the practice of praying for the dead is not unknown to me, nor is the metaphor of the dead still being with us. I believe you and I likely have a lot of important things we agree on with regards to how to treat the dead.

Fellow Christians, not many of us see value in holding onto a superstition. But I'd like to know what we've gained for the Lord in arguing about what's superstitious and what's respectful tradition. I assure you, there are brother and sister disciples-in-Jesus who consider accepted sacramental as non-sacred, bordering on idolatry. And what good that has done for them is as invisible to me as what happens at a blot.

actually the dead are reincarnated into any of a number of realms, and that includes your god who will eventually die and be reborn, likely as a cockroach

Idunno, maybe being a Bavarian Catholic already makes me half-pagan, but I don't have issues with thinking that the dead (to some degree) still hang around, either lending a helping hand or being profoundly confused. If more than 95% of all human cultures have practiced ancestor work since the beginning of time, who am I to say that they were wrong?
Afaik the actual gospels do not feature a detailed description of what happens to the dead, like "and exactly 30 seconds after death they arrive in heaven or hell, no other option!", so I'm open to the idea of the dead having more adventures before getting their final rest.

Just basing myself on the 4 gospels, I cannot find a detailed cosmology on death and what comes after. Many allegories about heaven and who can enter it more easily than others, a few quotes about a judgement and about the lovely time those judged poorly will have, and that's basically it. Can you help me with more quotes?
