Tomorrow we resume with Part III - all those god damned trades

Feb 8, 2004
PART III of V: Trades

Trade Review (based on total stats during post-trade interval)

Trade #1
code:
Nov. 6
NRa trades Bledsoe (G - PHO) to EBO for Jokic (PF/C - DEN)
 period games W/L round grade
11/6-3/12 60:52 5/4 3rd:3rd C
3/13-4/2  0:10   1/8  DNP:2nd  A++
SUMMARY: Gave up STL/3PT/FT% for FG%/REB/BLK
Blessed for the time being with unexpectedly good FG% and BLK from Durant, I began a series of trades to divest from my glut of scoring guards into balanced attack big men. This was the most successful of my attempts. As impressive as Bledsoe was before Phoenix shut him down, and as much as both players seemed risky at moments, Jokic was there at the end which (should have been) all that mattered.
Edge: NAPIER RENEGADEangel

Trade #2
code:
Nov. 11
NRa trades Booker (G - PHO) to BGI for Green (G/SF - SAS)
 period games W/L round grade
11/11-3/12 58:56 5/4 9th:8th C
3/13-4/2 9:9 6/3 9th:12th C
SUMMARY: Gave up PTS/AST/FT% for TOV/BLK/FG%
Devin Booker will probably continue to be a polarizing character, useful for certain teams but with the potential to be very destructive within the limited scope of weekly H2H. Danny Green is a shooter who frequently forgets how to shoot (see: all of last year and half of this one). I swiftly grew to experience buyer's remorse and flipped Green back to BGI's later on, which would ultimately end in an even more frustrating fashion.
Edge: roughly even

Trade #3
code:
Nov. 27
NRa trades Payton (G - ORL) to CfB for Sefolosha (G/SF - ATL)
 period games W/L round grade
11/27-3/12 51:41 4/5 6th:10th C-
3/13-4/2 10:6 6/3 5th:21st F
SUMMARY: Gave up AST/PTS/FG% for TOV/FT%
I probably could have avoided this one if I had kept in mind the fact that Thabo is like 10 years older than Elfrid. Alas, I focused on other things, like Sefolosha's status as an UFA and Payton's apparent demotion behind DJ Augustin, as well as the Magic's general aimlessness. That would prove to be very short-sighted, particularly during our playoffs when a hobbled Sefolosha produced the worst FG% rate among all owned players (.355 on, mercifully, only 6.5 attempts/game). Payton meanwhile averaged more playoff assists/game than LeBron or Curry.
Edge: Cruisin for a Boozin

Trade #4
code:
Dec. 5
NRa trades Green (G/SF - SAS) to BGI for M. Williams (SF/PF - CHA)
 period games W/L round grade
12/5-3/12 45:45 4/5 8th:5th C+
3/13-4/2 9:11 0/8 12th:2nd B+
SUMMARY: Gave up STL for REB/PTS/FG%
The only frustration that plagued me this season was picking up and trading for swing-men in search of defensive stats, only to find that they don't like to produce those anymore while on my team. The injured-at-the-time Marvin Williams was a perfect acquisition for my team, and a great re-do on the underwhelming Booker/Green swap I had done earlier. At least, it would have been, if I hadn't grown incredibly pissed off at his 1 block in 10 games and dropped him less than a month after this trade (to the benefit of trade-shy but always wire-savvy DickVitalesRightEye). As it turned out, the perfect playoff pinch-hitter for Durant had already slipped through my fingers long before March.
Edge: NAPIER RENEGADEangel (nominally)

Trade #5
code:
Dec. 11
McD trades Harden (G/SF - HOU) to CfB for Paul (G - LAC)
 period games W/L round grade
12/11-3/12 43:21 7/2 1st:10th F---
3/13-4/2 9:12 5/4 2nd:1st B-
SUMMARY: Gave up PTS/AST/3PT/REB for TOV/FG%
This might have just worked out for old McDonald's, but unfortunately fate had other plans as a thumbless CP3 yo-yoed out of the lineup eventually missing half the remaining games of the season as Harden cleaned up shop in pursuit of his MVP campaign. In the end, Cruisin rode to glory from the 2-seed, while McDonald's squeaked into the playoffs for an inglorious exit. Although the tables would turn later on in week 22 as Harden grimaced through his own injury woes, the damage to McDonald's had already been done. It probably doesn't need to be said that this trade defined the season result, so I won't say that (but man if I've ever seen a trade that did...).
Edge: Cruisin for a Boozin

Trade #6
code:
Jan. 13
NRa trades Holiday (G - NOP) to BGI for Batum (G/SF - CHA)
 period games W/L round grade
1/13-3/12 26:27 4/5 3rd:4th C-
3/13-4/2 11:9 7/2 3rd:11th D-
SUMMARY: Gave up STL/FG%/BLK for FT%/TOV/REB
Once again I go fishing for some fat statlines and miss the mark, but once again I perform an act of arbitrage to undo some of the damage. Batum had his moments but was a complete disaster during the playoffs, so I'm really glad I ditched because I might have been crazy enough to hold onto him due to my late-season roster construction issues. Holiday, on the other hand, kicked rear end for BGI's Ballers racking up defensive stats, and possibly shed some of his injury/risk labels in the course of doing so. With an off-season to learn his way around the twin towers, the youth and opportunity is there for an even better step forward.
Edge: BGI's Ballers

Trade #7
code:
Feb. 23
NRa trades Batum (G/SF - CHA) to CfB for Teague (G - IND)
 period games W/L round grade
2/23-3/12 10:9 5/4 4th:7th C-
3/13-4/2 9:11 2/7 11th:4th B-
SUMMARY: Gave up STL for FG%/AST/FT%
A bullet dodged and a lukewarm bit of revenge on Cruisin for my earlier misstep, the slow-starting UFA Teague performed very solidly during the Pacers' late season doldrums. For CfB's purposes, the acquisition was certainly useful in its own way - Batum almost produced well enough to hold off DVRE from the 1-seed, and delivered enough of a mixed bag of 3PT/REB/STL to make up for his shooting woes in the finals vs. DeMars. For my part I would have been more wise to just quit two trades ago and stick it out with Holiday.
Edge: NAPIER RENEGADEangel

Trade #8
code:
Mar. 4
NRa trades A. Williams (PF/C - PHO) to EBO for Hollis-Jefferson (G/SF/PF - BKN)
 period games W/L round grade
3/4-3/12 5:5 5/3 4th:10th C-
3/13-4/2 10:12 1/7 21st:6th B
SUMMARY: Gave up a relatively trivial amount of REB for STL/FT%/AST
The first of my post-Durant panic trades worked out well enough on paper, but may have cost me big-time as I ended up coming short by only 7 REB in my first round matchup. Alan Williams was a real force of nature for the week I owned him, but it was sort of a perfect storm of opportunity and people not knowing to foul the poo poo out of him. The same storm came a week later for RHJ, but in the end I felt that I'd match up better in the playoffs if I only kept one of RHJ or Iguodala and so I cut RHJ almost immediately. I chose the right one to keep in a vacuum but probably not for my circumstances vs. the ruthlessly efficient Dion & The Waiters (who I only realized I was facing after I put the move through).
Edge: NAPIER RENEGADEangel (nominally)

Trade #9
code:
Mar. 5
NRa trades Beverley (G - HOU) to McD for Iguodala (G/SF - GSW)
 period games W/L round grade
3/5-3/12 4:4 4/4 7th:4th C+
3/13-4/2 10:10 3/6 13th:4th B
SUMMARY: Gave up 3PT for FG%/TOV/STL
I knew I had to get more STL to go anywhere in the playoffs, and this deal turned out pretty well for me. Beverley hadn't looked right for a couple of games and I had been trying to move him hard. Not knowing for sure how small the Warriors would go, I thought that between Iguodala and Pachulia, I could absorb at least some of what I was losing in the aftermath of the GSW frontcourt. I really should have only done one of these trades once both were accepted, but I was concerned that if I cancelled with Easy Blake, McDonald's would back out and leave me to search the barren wire for SF plug-ins.
Edge: NAPIER RENEGADEangel

This is normally where I'd invite you to join the AutoTrader drive to the finals game, but that looks like a complete clusterfuck, so... I guess use this space to reflect on your season and the nice superlatives you've won. Thanks again - this was the best and most competitive season yet; we can and will always do better. Until next time, spacejung says sayonara.
