well, COM remains alive and well, and in fact has rather been doubled down on windows 10. it rather seems that the idea of language independence has always been a bit of a misstep though, windows bends over backwards to put .net, c++ and javascript on the same level, where in e.g. osx you just accept that there'll be an objective-c object below it all, and write some language-specific adapter code as needed

specifically the idea of documents as collections of ole components backed by these globally registered components were rather derailed by the web happening and an expectation of a unified declarative definition of the document

my first programming job was maintaining a ASP classic web application that did all its database access through COM objects that were written in VB6.

people actually use Windows, so it's no good only supporting some useless also-ran language that you only choice to show off how cool and different you think you are.

I also got a bag of chocolate smooth.
I still use midi files when messing around with music production, musescore/ableton.

Most people probably think of midi files like this though:

The roland MT-32 is loving boss, I'm so happy to finally have one!

You can tell ScummVM, DOSbox and various other emulators to pipe the midi out to the real hardware as well, I've been listening to a bunch of game soundtracks and you can tell they put a ton of effort into programming custom patches for the thing.

midi seems like the most stable tech standard to date, people are trying to use usb as the transport and extend it with higher resolution and lower latency but it's still used for so much stuff

yeah, it's held up incredibly well for 30+ year old tech. in a way it's a victim of its own success - it wouldn't have stuck around long enough for its limitations to become relevant if it hadn't been so solid in the first place.

also that's called stadium trance or cheese trance, download a bunch of euphoria or gatecrasher mixes if you want to learn more

Those games were released later during the 90s when the general midi standard was established and the MT-32 isn't GM compliant out of the box so it sounds weird

But oh ho what is this http://www.rolandus.com/support/general_apps_tools/1713

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RabYvZ2Y2WE

Finally found a way to do a direct audio and video capture, too. If only OSX didn't have keyboard shortcuts that interfere with just about everything :v:
