After a long hiatus, movies are back! That's right, I can't believe it either, but it's happening.

You know the drill. Once a week we'll be watching a movie.

My plan is every Saturday at 7 PM EST. However the important thing isn't watching it at the exact same time as everyone else (There will definitely be nights where I won't be able to make that exact time, and I'm sure I won't be alone!) but rather, just watching it and talking about it! So if you can't make it then it's no biggie. There may also be streams happening at different times, if so I'll make sure to put the details right here where they're easy to find.

Here's the list of movies we'll be watching, for those who want to acquire their anime well in advance.

Week 1: Crusher Joe
Week 2: Toki no Tabibito: Time Stranger
Week 3: Roujin Z
Week 4: Double Feature! Hal & Kuro ga Ita Natsu
Week 5: Steam Boy
Week 6: They Were Eleven
Week 7: Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space
Week 8: Double feature! Gauche the Cellist & Tales of a Street Corner

Here are the details behind what we'll be watching next weekend!

Crusher Joe

quote:

Crushers: intergalactic Jacks-of-All-Trades who will take on any assignment for the right price. Crusher Joe heads a small team of these outer space troubleshooters that includes the cyborg Talos, the beautiful Alfin, and the obligatory kid sidekick Ricky. A routine assignment escorting a cryogenically frozen heiress to a medical facility goes awry when the girl goes missing and Joe and his team are left holding the bag. It seems space pirates are trying to play the Crushers for patsies, but Joe doesn’t take kindly to the setup and tracks the pirates to their home world. The four heroes not only have to rescue their human cargo but take down the pirates in the process, which involves a heck of a lot of space dogfights, explosions, and good old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat.

Year: 1983
Studio: Studio Nue
Director: Yoshikazu Yasuhiko - Originally a character designer in the 70s (most notable for the designs in Mobile Suit Gundam), he went on to direct a few projects in the 80s, the Crusher Joe movie being among them. Most of his work since the 80s has been in manga form, most notably Gundam: The Origin. But he has returned to the director's chair recently, and in directing The Origin he's the rare example of a creator who is directing an adaption of their own work.
Writer: Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (see above)
Source Material: Light novel. Written by Haruka Takachiho, who is also the author of the Dirty Pair light novels.
Availability: Discotek has license rescued the movie. Unfortunately they haven't put it out yet, and it's quite out of print for the time being. You'll have to download this one if you don't already own it, and if you do make sure you download the movie, not the OVA.

Last time I ran a movie simul, I opened with Dirty Pair: Project Eden and it was a nice, light-hearted way to start it off. So with that in mind I picked Crusher Joe to open up this simul. Unlike when I picked Project Eden, I haven't seen Crusher Joe so I'm hoping for similar results!

I assume we're not going to be watching the English dub, which means that we'll miss out on this theme song.

Full thoughts tomorrow when I have the time, but that was a good movie. When working on a movie budget Yas' characters are just a delight in motion, there were so many nice little touches that went a long way.

It really makes me wish we could have gotten a tv series in the 80s. It would have been a fantastic fit right alongside shows like Dirty Pair and Cobra.

hello its me, the one guy who joined the simulwatch.

crusher joe for me was kinda.... mediocre? it didn't really hit for me. the action was well animated, but the story wasn't interesting enough to make me care outside of a few moments. its also incredibly long for an anime movie, and i don't think its quite good enough to be able to keep me interested for that time. so i often found my attention slipping. on a related note, who was the dead valentinos guy they found near the end? i forgot

oh and it was fun seeing proto dirty pair (?) pop up

The dead guy was the guy that originally gave them the job. I guess he was just killed offscreen for reasons? It is weird that they showed him freaking out about their ship arriving on that planet and then he wasn't seen again.

While I did enjoy it a bunch I definitely agree they really could have shaved some time off some of the story and be better off for it. I was enjoying the character dynamics far more than the plot, which was a bit more convoluted than it needed to be for this kind of movie. The scene in the disco was the highlight for me in that regard, it really showed me that yep, this is definitely the same guy that brought us Dirty Pair.

yup the disco was the best part. well animated, colourful and mostly focused on the characters rather than the dull plot. drunk characters is always good as well

YAS's characters always seem more expressive when he's directing them, I love it. It's definitely too long though. There were a couple of moments I thought would be the climax and it turned out there was still MORE movie left.

Just a reminder that tonight we're watching Toki no Tabibito: Time Stranger!

quote:

Agino Jiro escapes the despotic world of the twenty-fifth century by stealing a time machine. He's forced to highjack a car to use as a power source in the twentieth century, and accidently brings a group of high school students along with their teacher with him. They make brief stops durring the fire bombing of Tokyo, the Meiji Revolution and the battle of Sekigahara to escape the Time Patrol agent sent to hunt them down. Their final destination is 1582, where they become guests of Oda Nobunaga, just four days before his assassination. They then must make a hard choice about whether or not to change history.

Year: 1986
Studio: Madhouse
Director: Mori Masaki. Very little on his anime resume, the most (relatively) well known one is the adaption of Barefoot Gen.
Writer: Three people were credited for this, Mori Masaki was one of them, the other two are Atsushi Yamatoya and Yoshio Takeuchi. The former wrote a few Lupin movies (including the very first movie) and not much else. The latter's more notable works are on the directorial side of things, as he worked on some 80s hits such as Space Adventure Cobra and Cat's Eye.
Source Material: A sci-fi novel written by Taku Mayumura. He has a lot of works under his belt but very few of his books are written in English (though one of them is available in ebook form for a mere 5 bux right now).
Availability: Definitely gotta download this one.
