It can appear in straight-forward ways, like offering Reese's Pieces to an alien, ordering a Pepsi in a retro café of the future, or filming an advertisement for Suntory Whiskey while visiting Japan. A movie might use it in a playful way, such as modeling a build-up of ghost activity with a Twinkie, Pepsico brands being the only surviving fast food places in 2032 A.D., or a man-eating bed glugging down a bottle of Pepto-Bismol.

It can be incredibly blatant, as with AOL in You've Got Mail, Nintendo in The Wizard, the assorted billboards of Love Happy, and the Converse All-Stars (“vintage 2004”) in I, Robot. They might spin it with allusions, a la Little Nero's Pizza and Pizza the Hutt.
Or it could be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjB6r-HDDI0

However it's used, product placement is a pretty pervasive part of contemporary movies, along with Hollywood accounting and its mysteries. Is it terrible? Is it amusing? Does it just not matter that much? Which movies have handled it best? Which used it worst? Who ordered Domino's?

The product placement in Rosemary's Baby. The credits specifally mentions that Rosemary's hair is done by Vidal Sassoon and when someone in the movie asks about her hair she even says "It's Vidal Sassoon. It's very in" . Then everyone in the movie keeps saying how ugly the haircut is.

Return of the Killer Tomatoes is a vastly underrated comedy masterpiece that features George Clooney in his finest role, and it has a hilarious product placement scene, beating Wayne's World by a few years.
