OH SNAP!

I feel like there was a period of time when even mentioning those two things was a big no-no. Or was it just asking about them?

Somebody give me a history lesson. Even though I should know it already by virtue of having somewhat been here.

IIRC the site came under some legal fire that caused the files subforums to go away, and a post was made explaining what happened and how talking about them wouldn't be tolerated. That was enforced for a good year or two there. Sometime in the past few years everyone stopped caring, not sure when exactly but it's interesting to remember back to that point of SA's history

I was so scared to post when I first joined, hah. This place could be pretty brutal back then. FYAD superstars were cool as gently caress in my eyes, for some reason. Now I'm just an old fart :(

Does anyone have screenshots of how the forums used to look? I remember being pissed when they changed the layout years back from the classic SA look

not only was it verboten to discuss those specific forums, for a while it was verboten to even imply that you had access to "pirated" music, tv shows, or games at all (the games people took this way more seriously than anyone else though)

now that youtube is a thing that doesn't make any kind of sense. not that it made much in the first place

I'm here because long ago (:corsair:), a friend, over my initial objections, bought me an account. Stockholm syndrome set in and within a year I was a true believer in these gay (now dead) forums.

I still come here mainly out of sheer habit and because stuff goons post is still, on occasion, funny.

Many moons ago I would read about Jeff K and Cliff Yablonski and Photoshop Phridays. I'd be laughing so hard it would hurt and being so far from home I signed up in order to have people to speak to.

It is still one of the most content filled communities I've seen online and the sheer amount of both humour and information that is possible to uncover is unrivalled.

I always come back because I really enjoy reading people's opinions on video games, movies and politics even if I don't always feel as though I have anything to contribute myself. That and the reports! :D

I used to read all this stuff with a buddy of mine back in high-school, we didn't have a credit card and felt we would have a hard time convincing parents to allow us to reg to what was a pretty wild website back then.

I checked every once in a while for years mostly let's plays and webcomic mocking, I ended up registering after the whole Chris Benoit saga as I felt this forum had some of the straightest takes about it.

I credit YLLS and BFC with helping me get a bunch of poo poo together. I mostly stick around for Podcasts, MMA and YLLS discussion.

A friend of mine registered waaaaay back and when he heard I was getting into Eve Online, he suggested I register so I could get into the cool space flying sperg crew. I totally hosed that up asking to join because I wasn't aware of the paranoid space politic espionage bullshit going on in spreadsheets online at the time and ended up registering with one of the other, less popular nulsec squads. Stuck around because if you sift through all the shitposts, you can find some real cool stuff. Like Edgecrusher's thread about his hosed up life, or The Health Care Stories megathread.

Edit: Lurked since 2006 or 2007 reading the GBS threads when I wasn't gaming. Not that it really matters, BUT I SURE THOUGHT IT DID WHEN I WAS ASKING TO JOIN GOONFLEET! gently caress.

joined for Eve, still haven't played it, haha

I joined mostly for the A/T threads. It was mindblowing to me that people were sharing very personal and very interesting stuff and not only you could read it, you could ask them questions. For instance, the male escort Ask me thread. Before that time, how else could you learn about that topic? Maybe if you found it in a book, and then it would be edited and censored for publisher's taste.

I keep coming because I like following discussions on politics, ancient history, astronomy etc and I can't be bothered to switch to reddit because I find it ugly and difficult to navigate.

ドーナツダメ!
Lurked in Games/ADTRW/GBS for a couple years. Reg'd to get access to GBSRadio and SAMart. (I still listen to a lot of the random rear end songs I discovered through GBSRadio.)

Staying because its still the most consistently quality general forum on the web, and we still do a good job of filtering out 90% of the otaku/gamer shitlords. And man, there are a lot of loving shitlords in those communities. :negative:

Also, I got woke under Obama and quickly realized how relatively moderate (in tone) D&D is. So, there's another reason.

The worst thing to happen to this forum was allowing FYAD/BYOB to infect GBS, forcing it to be cordoned off into a No-Mans Land.

I joined up after many months of lurking the forums, as some friends I'd made online kept referring to things posted here. Once the infamous Malatora saga was posted and then became hidden due to it being paywalled, I caved and tossed in my :10bux: because I couldn't stop digging into that rabbit hole of insanity.

So yeah I came here for the aluminum dragon dongs.

I am still here.
