I'm 42 years old and currently have $37.53 in my savings account. I feel like thinking about retirement at this point would be ludicrously optimistic. On the bright side tho my liver can't possibly have more than a few good years left in it, so I figure this problem will solve itself

You and 71% of the country.

Seventy-one percent of Americans say they do not have enough retirement savings, according to a new national survey commissioned by Experian in collaboration with Get Rich Slowly (getrichslowly.org).

Especially worrisome: More than half of those surveyed, 54 percent, believe they will never pay off their debt fully.

At 2020 I will have the option to retire if I choose with a blue state pension & benefits. In addition I currently have a bloated 401k just under 300k. Oh by the way, I'll still be under 55 come 2020.

To answer the question, I will be driving my new Indian motorcycle along the beach somewhere in a red state. I will also have a classic 1950's era pick-up truck that will have a tiny bed big enough for a cooler, my guitars+toys or a surfboard. I will have a pup that goes on adventures with me that I will name Milo.

My regular days will consist of gym/lunch/playing music/riding my toys & pursuing other interesting hobbies. I think I will learn to curse in French/build military grade drones & if you see some old bald dude riding a longboard along boardwalk with a fu-manchu & a full Jack Kirby sleeve that will be I.

Retirement will not exist in 30 years just probably state sponsored cyanide capsules sent to your door on your 65th birthday (unless you're rich then they'll let you hang around)

So what I'm saying is, my plan is to live in an underground enclave of forbidden old people being hunted by the government.

Is retirement "the American dream" with an acre of nice land that you worked hard for and receive toward the end of your lifespan? Or is it like you keep getting the same check you've been getting just about til you die but you don't have to work?

The second one used to be true. But jobs with decent pensions are a myth nowadays, and if you do get a pension your bosses are going to lose it gambling on totally slick investment moves that will crumble in the next financial crisis.

land is pretty cheap if you get away from the city. this is my plan, i will purchase a remote cabin in the canadian north as soon as it is financially feasible. i'm not waiting for retirement! i want to eliminate as many bills as possible with "of the grid" shenanigans. i will pay my meager property taxes selling crafts over the internet:

I could totally die happy being that guy.
