The SK government built up its industrial base by colluding with family-run companies to form monopolies, which which allowed for rapid industrialization, but ended with massive wealth disparities and entrenched corruption and phones that explode and kids throwing themselves off their school rooftops. SK chaebols defend their existence by pretending that they are indispensable for SK's prosperity, which is patently bullshit as you could break them up into companies that can actually compete with another. Aka it's the same bullshit defense used by Wall Street against Occupy.
