Climate change speak:

I don't know how big of a deal this is but to my limited brain, it seems like a big step? Maybe someone can tell me if it is just for optics or if this will actually have a positive impact.

Exxon shareholders approve climate impact report in win for activists

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/exxon-steps-efforts-sway-shareholders-040711436.html

:laffo: It's just optics. If we want to avoid catastrophic climate change, we have to burn less fossil fuels than proven reserves already known to exist. Our only option is to leave a large fraction of the known, proven, bought & paid for fossil fuel deposits in the ground. That means that ExxonMobil, Gazprom, et al will have to write off trillions of dollars in proven, unextracted resources, a financially ruinous move that would likely destroy the company as we know it. Instead, they're still exploring for new oil and gas deposits. Until shareholders are willing to vote to zero out their investments, it's window dressing.

In other fun news, Japan effectively shut down their nuclear industry after Fukushima, so their scientists are working on developing an entirely new fossil fuel source: extracting methane hydrates from the sea floor. If that sounds familiar, it's because methane hydrate plays a large role in the clathrate gun hypothesis wherein changes in the ocean environment cause a runaway release of methane that rapidly cooks the planet. Someone looked at that possible extinction level event and said, "that sure sounds energy dense." Sleep tight.

yeah it's not that BAH is uncommonly bad, it's that they have an uncommonly large footprint
