Having a lot of fun with Rogue Mage today. Can't decide whether I like the fact that it doesn't have any unlocks for the core game or not. On the one hand, it's neat to have that cross-progression. On the other hand, it was annoying not having cool premiums in Gwent unless I found secret stuff in Thronebreaker.

White Line Fever

Is it out already? How is it? Is it similar to Thronebreaker with quests and choices and exploration?

It's out, yeah. It's not like Thronebreaker at all. It's a Rouge-like. It's basically Slay The Spire, where you go up the branching path while adding, removing, and upgrading cards in your deck. Combat is, of course, a game of Gwent, but it's only a single round, you have a hand of 5 cards, and you draw a card each of your first few turns. Your leader ability is to play one of three cards (the choices are, of course, customizable during/between runs), it has a one turn cool-down, so it's crazy strong, but it uses up a resource that doesn't replenish between matches, so recovering that resource is part of the events and rest nodes on the map.

I just unlocked this treasure while leveling up. I haven't gotten it yet in a run, but if it counts as a gold card to trigger Roach, it has to be the funniest thing in the game.

lmao. 2 x mirror card, double first spell potion mirror spell = 9 copies of a very silly card once it evolves

Whelp, it's the beginning of the end.

quote:

In case anyone's missed it, here's an overview of the things that were mentioned in the Dev stream with Burza and Vlad:

Season 5 of Gwent Masters begins on 10/01/2023.

2022 recap:

Gwent has added 86 cards throughout the year (more than initially planned), which definitely had a big impact on the game. Journeys have been reintroduced. Reworks were a big part of last year's roadmap; 88 cards were completely reworked (more than cards were added). All was part of smaller card drops with reworks. Infusion has been added as a new keyword which opened up the design space. Outside of balance, resource management has also been addressed with some resource sinks. New seasonal modes have been added, and some unpopular ones have been removed. 17 eSports events were organised (including Masters, Opens and Qualifiers).

Premium tokens have unfortunately not been implemented yet. New cards were prioritized during the year. Some premium tokens are (nearly) finished, and will be released (but not all tokens will be premified). As a result, around 20 premium tokens will be added to the game.

The packages in Draft have not been getting updates, which has meant they have become outdated. Unfortunately, due to the way the code has been developed originally, changing those packages is very complicated and time-consuming for the developers. The team has been working on a new prototype of Draft to remedy this, which works well. They will try to find time to implement this properly in the coming year, but they cannot guarantee or promise anything.

Not all archetypes are viable yet, and the work on them is not done yet. They had always been planning to keep working on this in 2023 so it's an ongoing process.

3 card-drops are planned for 2023; 72 cards are planned. They are not planned to be equal in size. 24 cards are planned to be released in April; 36 cards in July and 12 cards in September.

Monthly balancing patches will be continued (including balance changes and reworks).

Vlad considers a deck viable when a deck is able to execute its gameplan at any rank, and can reasonably win matches when piloted well. It doesn't need to destroy the rest of the meta; just that it has a chance against higher-tier decks. An example of an unviable deck currently is NG Spies. They don't exclusively focus on pro-rank; they need to look at all ranks. At the same time, competitiveness of decks is kept in mind, and it is acknowledged that there is a general tendency that the strongest decks are flexible (and become a bit more midrangey as a result). Having multiple equally viable decks in a card game is simply a difficult ideal to achieve.

No new cards are planned for release in 2024. 2023 is the last year planned with new cards. Gwent players will have the tools to balance the game themselves (within reasonable limits; obviously new mechanics etc. cannot be added, but things like provision and power-changes). (Brace yourself for actual Reddit balancing. How long will it take before the community nerfs GN gets to 10p?)

Progression system will also be changed, so that there stays a reason to come back to the game and experiment with deckbuilding choices. They considered some form of rotation but decided against it (partially due to new players). Players will have access to their full collection at all times, but there will be new quests, rewards and achievements.

Similarly, season 5 will be the last competitive season. At the end of June/beginning of June there will be a mid-season tournament; in December there will be World Masters. Qualification and other tournaments in between will be announced after discussion with pro-players.

Technical support will continue to go on. The team is committed to handing over Gwent to the community in the best possible shape, and doing the project justice.

EXTREMELY PISSED AT THE DNC
Shame. I enjoyed this game.

lol Community Balance will absolutely kill the game dead fast.

I'm not surprised they're shutting it down: Gwent's never been the most popular card game outside of the Witcher 3 variant, and Thronebreaker and Rogue Mage both didn't juice numbers enough to justify continuing to add cards for like 5,000 players daily.

GAHDAMN
The stupidly overpowered cards released and lax balancing the past year plus definitely sped up the death
