Honestly I do not know if this belongs in PYF or D&D. But, I had an experience today that I think warrants a thread: I walking to my car this afternoon and Judy Collins' version of "Bread and Roses" came up on my shuffle. I have loved that song for a long time. It is my favorite union song not just for its history but because it has my favorite point: we deserve not just life but dignity. We deserve wages for food, but we all also deserve enough wages for the occasional luxury too. But as long as I have loved that song I never had a reaction to it like I did this afternoon. I was on the verge of tears. Now, I also live in Missouri. A few weeks ago I signed a petition to repeal Right to Work. I was busy all day so I did not know until about 8 or 9 o'clock this evening that we got enough signatures to suspend right to work's implementation. Now, I am generally comfortable identifying as an atheist so I am not generally spiritual and I generally right off coincidences. But I would be lying if I said it didn't feel spooky when I found out RtW got at least delayed. So, anyway, post your favorite union songs, ballads, or general activist songs. Here are a few to get us started: the song that almost moved me to tears today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKEr5U8ERgc the song my thesis adviser, one of my union buddies, and I had all independently turned to the day after Trump's election: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psB0cidB5bg One more union song I love; Hazel Dickens' Fire in the Hole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiGPbHnpQks The song that I am pretty sure at one point was D&D's rally cry; Killer Mike' Reagan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lIqNjC1RKU A song that many people most associate with Black Lives Matter; Kendrick Lamar's Alright: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-48u_uWMHY Christ, I could go on forever; Bob Dyaln's A Pawn in Their Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY2lQV3ADfc Last in the OP I promise. How are you gonna make this thread and leave Pete Seeger out of the OP??? Solidarity Forever, the all time union anthem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8eK9ZXf-Ow Tomorrow is a Highway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ28C_8tvoU Listened to this one on repeat a lot earlier this year. The liner notes for this (extremely good) album (you can download them as a PDF on this page) give it some context that make it feel even more appropriate for this particular moment He's got your civil rights movement classics too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfo_W73n0hE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyZVaH6YB10 And being from NJ I'm contractually obligated to mention Bruce Springsteen's tribute album, The Seeger Sessions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpeisHYbKdE

"Commonwealth of Toil" keeps me going. "They would keep us cowed and beaten, Cringing meekly at their feet. They would stand between each worker and his bread. Shall we yield our lives up to them For the bitter crust we eat? Shall we only hope for heaven when we're dead?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVcWEtFXwnc

This one is a bit unusual: a leftist song that is explicitly anti-Soviet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idkyWDZguas Translation of lyrics: August of -68, a Czech woman goes from her night at the machines, an early bell tolls. A thunderclap from the sky, a morning bright and new. A column of armoured vehicles rolls into her city. We will never forget Prague - we hear, comrades -, that foreign soldiers are stomping on your soil. A Quisling behind the cannons is threatening arrest for whoever throws rocks at a tank in protest. A people leaving for work turn their backs in sorrow, a group of youths are building a barricade on a square. Three thousand men and women that shouted "NO" at once Who hears them behind the walls, who hears their song? But the Internationale that goes from mouth to mouth a whisper in a hidden room, it rises at this moment. Because the Soviets came to the country while the entire people slept. They said that they were brothers, but their acts were violence and plunder. We see the black terror and we shout towards your country: Your hatred against the occupier shall erupt in open flame! Then you'll prevail, Prague – prevail, comrades And foreign soldiers will be driven from your soil.

I was mid-cruise on Inauguration Day, having been miserable-to-despondent ever since the election. I was eating lunch in a nicer restaurant on board trying not to think about things, enjoying the two guitarists/vocalists and their pleasant background music. A woman at a loud table behind us raised her glass and said, "Here's to Donald J. Trump. I believed in you from the very beginning." Her lunch companions hear-heared her while I glared at her and muttered invective. Then the musicians started playing this: https://youtu.be/f5M_Ttstbgs It helped. That's my story, For What It's Worth.

I like the fact that Phil Ochs made "Love Me, I'm A Liberal" as well as the kind of song for said liberal ("Here's To the State of Mississippi"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7fgB0m_y2I I can put just any song by Bad Religion in this post, but I'll just do a relevant anthem from a latter-day album ("The Resist Stance"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sykzo1QpSlE Also relevant: "The Only Good Fascist is a Very Dead Fascist" by Propagandhi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Tlwf9A1ivc

Paul Robeson singing "Song of the Warsaw Ghetto" or "Zog nit keyn mol" is quite something: https://youtu.be/NV0hP9dAApk The song was written by Hirsch Glick, an inmate of the Vilna Ghetto, on 1943. He escaped the ghetto in 1944 but is presumed to have been executed by the Germans as he was never heard from again.

I know someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but Phil Ochs' "Love Me, I'm A Liberal" is still amazing, especially the punch of that last line of the final verse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52Oz-54VYw
