City shrouded in shadow

City Shrouded in Shadow is a Sci-Fi Survival Action Adventure.

It's made by the same guys that did disaster report
You play as a civillian trying to survive giant monsters attacking your city, or maybe some are even trying to protect the city?

I'm doing both an SSLP and a video LP aswell.
Here's the youtube video: https://youtu.be/q57dgQwRHfg

An opening movie plays when the game starts
The opening movie shows some cool shots of Godzilla

I think he's the biggest star
I hope the new baby Godzilla shows up!

Ultraman is also here

Fighting another ultraman?

I don't know there's two though.

This one is Hydra, right?

This mech is from Patlabor, right?

I don't know this mech.

Of course I know this one.

It's Eva test unit 01 and it's traderked AC adapter!
I hope it doesn't trip on anything.

That one turtle godzilla monster

He appears to be attacking some nest or something?

That's all the cool parts of the opening movie

Here's the start screen. The motto of the game is oddly written but okay.

We choose new game.

Then the loading screen starts giving us a bit of prologue.
Translated by yours truly.

And then the game starts in a first person view of someone walking in the rain, in downtown

They look up, and think "Rain..."

All of a sudden you get a choice of what to say

1)Boku ha "I am (male pronoun)
or
2)Watashi ha "I am (female pronoun)
I chose to be a guy.

Then you get another choice

1)I am leaving from work
2)I am leaving from school
3)I am excited to have come to the city!
4)I got here somehow

I chose 3
Then the view pans up
And you see a purple flash

Then it goes out of first person view to show us our character

This is the type of character you get with that choice

He does some dumb anime pose when he says his name.

Then Misaki says that he was supposed to meet with a certain girl, which gives you yet another choice.

1) She is my friend
2) She is important to me
3) She is my lover
4) I don't really know here
I think this is some sort of personality test...

I chose 4

"...I don't know her very well actually"

After he says where we're supposed to meet her, then we get control of him, and the stage title appears

There's a bit of framerate issues when just running around.

Man hiding from rain says "The rain isn't stopping..."

I go inside the conbini

I talk to this sharp looking fellow
And he sells me this picture of an idol named Honoka-chan

Who knows we might need it!

Not much to do inside here

I get close to the counter and the game gives me a tutorial on crawling.

I do so

And a cutscene starts playing

She noticed us, abort!

She's not very angry about it though...

Then you get 3 choices

1) What is this about Morimoto-kun?
2) Do you have plans after work?
3) (Pretend to be an acquaintance) That Morimoto did something again, huh!

I choose 3

She says "Huh!? You know Morimoto-kun?

"That's right, he's late again, he was supposed to replace mech

Aww poor girl

Then her boss starts talking to her

Just say no, dummy

What kind of show even is this?

So this is our first side quest already.

You get a choice to be nice about finding them or be a dick about it but still look for them.
I go with being nice

I go inside the door behind me

And I find a secret coin

They unlock costumes and poo poo

Apparently these are from the previous disaster report games

I go out of the conbini

And apparently juice vending machines are save points

I take a few steps foward and see a flash

Holy shitballs.

Yay we finally get disaster!

I go to the other side of the street

What is that red leg?

ooh shiny!

I go back to the sidewalk

And ultraman is fighting something?

Tune in next time!

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
From what I got watching the trailers, this looks like Disaster Report by way of what everyone was hoping Cloverfield would be, which is an idea so good I'm shocked it hasn't been made a dozen times already. Shame that the byzantine labyrinth that is international distribution rights prevents this stuff from ever leaving Japan (though because Namco loves us, they translated the last couple Super Robot Wars games into English themselves so they can be imported).

Now, I'm no expert, but the hydra-looking fellow is King Ghidorah, one of Godzilla's many, many, many foes. Additionally, the Ultraman we're seeing is the original Ultraman, rather than one of its dozens of successors. Speaking of, while Godzilla is definitely the biggest star internationally, Ultraman is just as much of a cultural fixture within Japan, by my understanding. Also, it was probably easiest for Namco to score the licenses for Patlabor and Evangelion, as both have appeared previously in their long-running Super Robot Wars franchise (in fact, Evangelion is one of the most common series in said franchise), and may have been included specifically because they were mecha anime that could be easily integrated into the modern/extremely near-future setting of this game, to add more variety to the mix.

EDIT: Also, watching the video, two things, your mic is a little, well, not great, and the kanji reading is "Kyoei Toshi", as seen on Wikipedia. It's an easy mistake to make, I honestly have no idea what the actual linguistic rules are for using the kan'on reading of a kanji over the kun reading in a compound word, aside from the first kanji pretty much always being the kun reading.

I'm glad to see lots of people are interested in this game. It warms my heart to see classics holding strong.

Here's the video portion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DGqa9dEAAE

I decided to load my game before Ultraman crashes the party, in order to look for that little poo poo, Morimoto.

All I could find of note was a mirror in order to change the main character's hair.

Now he looks like Nathan Fielder.

I get a good look at his imposing entrance this time.

He looks very imposing.

Time to go see what he was shooting at.

...Just the city itself...

And he's trying to step on people!

Ultraman looks like he's thinking "I just bought these shoes!"

And then amidst the destruction a cutscene plays out of nowhere.

It's that one flower lady.

Flowers get stampeded.

[dramatic music plays]

Then you get a choice

1) Are you okay? Console her
2) It can't be helped in this situation.... and leave
3) Give her all your money and buy the bundle of stepped flowers
4) Haha! Just look at you! and snicker

I pick 2)

I don't know why, but yes.

Then you get a choice

1) Grab her hand look her in the eyes and say "I want to help you"
2) The conversation got too real, so you just leave
3) Sounds very generic, leave without interest and step on the flowers

I can't be an rear end in a top hat, I just can't.
Not on my first play through at least.

That's all that happens though, no furhter interaction thankfully.

As we try to go further...

What a twist! Ultraman has a twin!

The other one doesn't like him though.

We have to run away though, no time for mingling

It's just a tiny explosion, get up!

Follow the shinny!

Let's ask that police lady for directions.

That doesn't sound very smart when there's giants knocking everything over,
but hey what do I know?

No, I didn't joke subtitle this.

As we cross the street she says this to us all of a sudden

Okay...

Off I go.

Dang it!

My sweater litterally burst into cotton!
I think clothes have their own health, or durability. It was a major issue in their previous disaster games.

As we walk by a building...

An explosion happens of course!

A whole hole appears on the side of the building!

There were people in there that were minding their own business...

As they're coughing their lungs out

We get a choice!:
1) Immidately look at the briefcase
2) Look at cruel looking man with glasses
3) Look at the tall stern tall man
4) Try to take the bills of money that are flying about

You know me...

10,000 yen get! 100 whole USD approx! I'm rich!

This guy won't let it slide though.

Seriously!?

His muscle says "I'll take care of him"

We are definitely not high level enough to take him on.

At least he notices what's been going on...

They don't seem to care though...

They give you a choice on what to think before running away...
Wow.

I'm assuming none of them matter.

The game gave me a QTE dodging tutorial in order to run away from them

We go up a pedestrian bridge

Ultraman spectacularly hurdles over the bridge, litterally, the motion cap on the giants is awe striking, it looks like they're on a miniature set.
The spandex looks really nice too I guess.

After an ultraman hurdles over the bridge he gets into CQC with the other one.

You of course get a choice here too

1) Cool! Amazingly impactful... you think and mutter to yourself
2) They look the same! Which is good and which one is evil? You start wondering
3) Neither of you lose! You cheer them on.
4) Seeing how we're here, I should take a commemoration photo with the giants as a backdrop

#send help

Then the game lets us take control now.

Dead end here

The game gave a tutorial on how to run fast for some reason...

That's why.

Because it's a timed event

Oh my god, his real identity was the dryer duct man!

Aluminum dryer exhaust tube man kicks Ultraman

And he goes flying, almost like it was scripted!

Dryer duct turns and looks at us

1) Getting a closer look you become aghast at it's sheer size
2)This looks dangerous, you take caution and leave
3) He looks very friendly, you wave your hand

Yay, friendship pellets!

Haha, they burn!

Action roll!

Then some reporter guy starts talking

As smoke starts entering the building everyone starts panicking

of course it's a good time for a choice
1) It's dangerous here let's take the stairs, you suggest
2) Try to go up the stairs without anyone noticing you
This game gives the middle finger to Stanely Parable

They tip him over as we try to sneak off

Cameraman starts talking to us

1) Why do you think I'm targeted?
2) I don't think I did anything you give a dissatisfied look
3) I only got here by the unfolding of events

I choose 1, but he says it's because I was getting shot at.

He's got death flags all over him.

I go up the stairs

That look weird...

It's KuroŽ and ToroŽ!

They say they need help

Sounds like a boring game. I'm looking foward to it.
Then we get a choice.

1) Okay! I'll help you!
2) The heck!? This cat can talk!? you become surprised
3) If you reward me with a really sensible reward then I will, you state your conditions
4) I'm busy ask someone else, you refuse in a cool way

I went with 2, Toro says he's been studying to be a human that's why he can talk.
I'm not sure if that's an agree though

Let's just pretend that didn't happen and return to our immersion

There's not much in this room, there's a merchant that sells food but that's it.

The game gives you a tutorial on how to break open doors.

A cutscene plays immediately as you go in.
I go through with the QTE

Which makes you dodge air duct's hand that he stuck in the building

Then a cutscene plays

Now's not the time!

All of a sudden!

As our hands start glowing...

The monster takes his hand out.

Then we get a choice on how to react:
1) What is this light...? My power...? you wondering
2) W-W-W-What is this light!? What's happening?? you panicking
3) I feel it! Inside of me, a new power is awakening! Your heart burns
4) Woooooh! I'm overflowing! My power! you exalt

I chose the most anime one.

Then this message pops up.

A mysterious light that's purple... If that flower had something to do with this...

The lady gets the hots for him

But she's just a side character, forget her. We need to go somewhere.

Oh no the floor is falling!

So this.........is purple power.............. not bad...

There's a save spot where we fell
The monster is waiting for us though, we need to get past it.

The game gives you a tutorial on how to activate colossus cam, which looks really cool but sucks controlling.
We start running...

And he starts shooting at us.

By the way the animation for the way he walks is really cool, it's like there's literally someone inside an uncomfortable suit.
The little details like that just blow my mind, it really feels like you're watching a movie in an angle that's never been done before!

Random QTE!

We keep fleeing

And our girlfriend detector goes off!

We get in front of her because of course that'll help.

We look to the right and see...

He's back!

Signature move that I don't know the name of!

To be continued...

This is the result screen of the chapter.

News articles!
With ads!

They give a rundown on what happened.

I love the graphic of the monster behind the text.

I'd like to know why some top brass man named him that.

And who's idea was this?
The game gives a history of the monster, that I didn't feel like translating.
News articles are delicate to translate and very tiresome.
The article states Zarab came to earth with friendly intentions, it's a mystery as to why he started destroying the city.
What universe does this loving game take place in?!

Here's another pic of him with his boombox?

I'd like to know more about the monster if it was in english though.

That's all for today folks!

I hope you enjoyed it!

The fake Ultraman is an Alien Zarab, one of a race of beings that love destroying planets (Ultraman is not a complicated series). The first Alien Zarab to attack Earth tried to discredit Ultraman and turn the world's militaries against him by transforming into a false copy and wrecking stuff, and that's what this fight was paying homage to. The finisher Ultraman used was an Ultra Beam, a type of attack every Ultraman iteration has some version of, the original's being known as the Specium Ray!

By the way, between the blonde hair and the goofy/casual choices so far, I'm starting to get a very "Leon S. Kennedy in RE4" vibe from the protagonist, which is always nice. Shame Capcom had to strip out all that personality in 6.

Maybe choosing a less fired-up answer would result in lower levels, and maybe answer 4 would have equated to level 4, but, like, that also determines the relative strength of the enemies to match, so if you want to be an anime hero, the game will make you prove it. Though I could be overthinking it.

While the background noise makes it a little hard to separate all the sounds, I'm pretty sure the first sound (the one that sounds like a human voice) was Ultraman doing a kiai, then the rest was the sound effect for the Specium Ray. Keep in mind that this is a sound effect originally produced in 1966. There was some sort of muttering sound audible during the attack, and I have no idea if that was supposed to be the player character reacting, some bystander, or what.

If I might make a suggestion:

Don't bother trying to translate these things out loud in the moment - this game is clearly stressful and bizarre enough that you need some hard core fluency to absorb it, and it gets confusing as a viewer to hear you debate a couple of readings in the moment - this is especially true for me since I have about a 4th grade level understanding of Japanese, so I'm trying to read it too and it gets even more confusing. Just drop the subtitle ribbons over things in post, grab the gist of the understanding for yourself in the moment, and go on with this wild ride.

By the way, on the topic of translation, while the licenses will prevent this game and any hypothetical sequel from leaving Japan, if it does enough business in imports, there may be some hope of seeing it in English. Namco expected enough import attention for the last two Super Robot Wars games to give both full English text translations to boost sales (the first was of dubious quality, but the second was pretty solid, not quite Aeon Genesis, but it was released sometime before the heat death of the universe so it's got that over AG). So, if City Shrouded in Shadow 2 ever becomes a thing, if it got enough attention over here, we may see English subtitles added in.

Also, while there's no way to confirm this, I'm gonna say Namco's new trend of in-house localizing games they can't feasibly release in the west is probably the result of all the money they made when Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada basically browbeat the entire rest of the company into giving Project X Zone an international release (it sold ten times what Namco had projected). I'm guessing they realized all their crossover business had a pretty solid cult following and they were just leaving money on the table not making it more accessible. And given that non-Japanese kaiju and tokusatsu fans have been woefully underserved in the video game market, this game could be an absolute gold mine if marketed properly.

unironically, reaching out to the company and saying you can bring together a team of Western ambassadors to help market it helps that equation quite a lot. that's how dangan ronpa got translated, there was a translation LP here that got a ton of attention, so marketing was trivial. obviously, a game like this isn't going to have as much broad appeal as an anime VN, but since a game like this is going to contain much less text it might not need it.

Obviously devil is in the details and we are way too busy to handle an official project like that right now, but Roboky and I have a non-trivial Youtube following at this point and if we could plan for it I'm pretty sure we could work something out.
