Yesterday I found out my closest friend died 4 and a half years ago, by suicide. He didn't consider me the same, but I think he also didn't know the impact he made on me. He was in a state of grace when he left, but his life was too hard. He taught me how to make art, entirely over the internet. He was from Pennsylvania and I am from California. He was 18 and I was 12 when I first contacted him. We talked over AIM, for the course of years until he died. I was just in my first year of college when it happened, and I went on to switch my major to art and got my degree 2 years ago. I think everything I made was in hopes of meeting the standard he showed me, and wondering if this is something he'd like to see. He was a pixel artist, draftsman, illustrator, comic book artist, painter, photographer and animator. He made his start in animation where he gained a big online following. http://cargocollective.com/03112 This is his genius webcomic never to be finished. I think it stands for itself He had a level of esoteric imagination, loaded with occultism, mysticism, spiritualism, industrial digital futurism, that was unprecedented. He had a level of detail that was obsessive, and his colors glowed and emanated from his soul. He was a visionary and had a deep knowledge of obscure midcentury artists. His favorite movie was Alien by Ridley Scott. Among his faves from the 19th c I know were Gustave Dore and Sidney Sime. http://abaoaqu-blog.tumblr.com/ http://therapydrawings-blog.tumblr.com/ http://deadphones.deviantart.com http://spacejelly.newgrounds.com http://ancientastronauttheorist-blog.tumblr.com/ Personal tumblr displaying his exquisite taste I think the ubiquitous anonymous female character in most of his art represented his inner identity. To me he was a genius like Van Gogh, no one recognized it but the magnitude of his work is, and obviously I'm biased, historical in my eyes. He liked pop culture but he cared so little about the people around it, what he read and liked to talk about was deep in the brain, cosmos and another planes of consciousness and existence. His mind was from the years 1700, 2000 and 2400. I want people to discover his art and the worlds locked in and informed by and from. He conveyed beauty. I'm in contact with his friends and potentially his family to help archive his art. On SA he was called ' The NPR Store ' and I know he was a CC regular. RIP Josh, aka Percival aka Percy I'll never forget reviewing albums with you, the music we exchanged and talked about, the text chats, the Youtube videos, art, movies, books, being forever depressed, seeing with nothing but light and electronics. I know you're in "heaven" listening to Yoko Kanno, Tori Amos and Nick Drake. This is what I remember you by. lmbo calrissian fucked around with this message at 12:15 on Dec 27, 2017 |

Another vision of gothic wonder. An imitable style, he innovated his own methods of pixel art #scifi #retrofuturism #neonoir #eschatology #apocalypticism #mysticism #occultism #fantasy #psychedelia #postmodernism #steampunk #cyberpunk #atompunk #horror #surrealism #symbolism #abstractexpressionism #abstractsurrealism #gothism #artnouveau #cryptoanarchism lmbo calrissian fucked around with this message at 19:45 on Dec 21, 2017 |
