But wait, it gets worse! Impact was their first PS2 title, and it shows. The save file loading times are atrociously slow, which is going to be a recurring annoyance if you're fishing for crits to get all the battle masteries. Even if you're playing it 'legit', you still have to deal with the camera. You know how modern isometric SRWs let you rotate everything 90° instantly with the press of a button? In Impact you don't have that. The camera doesn't just rotate/pan very slowly, but the maps are forced isometric and 3d, so you have to futz with the camera if you want to actually see and control the units that are between buildings/mountains/asteroids. Also the Einst suck, they're not just boring piles of nothing plotwise, but their units have HP regen, barriers and MAPWs. This is in a game where your resources are spread so thin that you'll never have more than a handful of endgame worthy units with you until stage 90, so enjoy slowly grinding them down while they regen and deny you counterattacks during their turns. Also also something like half the antagonists are just there and completely divorced from the rest of the plot. It's bad. Edit: Endorph made a post about Cao Cao on the last page! Go read it! It's better than my ceterum censeo Impact esse delendam gimmick! GimmickMan fucked around with this message at 01:18 on Sep 18, 2018 |

SirSystemError posted:Yeah. All that is uh, pretty bad to say the least. And Char as the true final boss? Gotta say, that's weak and disappointing. At least the Devil Gundam and Anti-Spiral were non-OG threats worthy enough of being a final boss. Even worse with putting in all the work to unlock a true final boss, expecting some threat behind the threats or a different spin on things. And instead you just get the Axis drop capping off the game.

AradoBalanga posted:I played Impact once long ago, but IIRC, what happens is that Char takes all of the revelations from the Einst and stuff from the game and decides to go "gently caress humanity". Gato's defection is more hilarious in that Char has been using his Quattro persona for the bulk of the game, up to and including when Gato joins up. So, once again Anavel Gato reinforces his status as "one of the dumbest motherfuckers produced by the Principality of Zeon" because Char was right next to him for a good portion of the game, and only when Char drops the disguise does Gato figure things out. That's not really how it went. This is the conversation for the first time you use Quattro to fight Gato (which is one of the requirements to unlock him): SRW Impact posted:ガトー「む!? この動き! いきなりふところに飛び込んでくるとは…!」 plus this other part, later on (also a requirement to unlock Gato): SRW Impact posted:クワトロ「ガトー少佐…」 So as you can see, Gato realized Quattro's identity as Char since the very first moment.

And, to wrap things up, here are a few subbed save skits for your enjoyment. I didn’t do them all, of course, but I picked a good bunch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuUs320k634 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goPwK1uMOBg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjDeddUD4kY You only get this skit if you saved Burn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44wG-ud935k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtMyv-NRz0o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx9zYhhUlEI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm8A3hnxDzo Historical reference; Qin Shi Huang sought immortality and figured ingesting mercury pills and sprinkling it on his food would do the trick. It didn’t. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N9ZY42_t-c Calling Guan Yu a liar is a reference to his VA, who voices Ime/Aim in Z2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98GwdF-K9xM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6-lznH1WRk You only get this skit if Lu Bu and Diaochan were saved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBRYPwI5eXo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WzBX0FrNx4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYHq4So2Cbc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff3K5VkYJhA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQaaYo47Fwg This final line gets added when you’re in NG+ - Master Therion knows when you’re piling up those secret flags. And I just couldn’t find this skit or get it to play, but it’s there. To see this one you must’ve saved Misao: : Good work today! Um… I’ve something I’d like to tell you, actually. : See, Soushi told me that it’s thanks to you, the Player, that I’m here today… : So, thanks a lot for that! I look forward to seeing you again!

I don't think I've ever felt as identified as I feel with Burn right now. Also, Misao's was hilarious. And I was hoping Sakomizu would say the female players could also be the next Prince of Hojo but I guess that's not the kind of attitude to expect from him, huh? Beyond that, well...you heard Kaido and Magami. Get working. Just kidding, SUPER ROBOT FINIIIIIIIIISH! It's a good finish.

Say, I just thought of something! This is a 3DS game, yeah? Does it actually have 3D on the actual hardware, or is this one of those sad 3DS games that didn't even try to do that?

Cool to see that the secret acknowledgement stuff even carries over into the save skits. Definitely convinced that UX has the strongest secrets of any SRW game now until convinced otherwise.Sordas Volantyr posted:Say, I just thought of something! This is a 3DS game, yeah? Though it does look silly in a few remote places, namely Aesap and Sakomizu's combo attack where the target is shown shaking in front of the ground. Something while we're still here and before I forget again: there's an alternate version of the title theme/really big goddamn heroes theme from the game's second trailer. Haven't been able to find a raw version of it anywhere though, assuming it exists at all. Shame too, since it's pretty nice.

I looked it up and, nope, it's just challenge maps with no dialogue. The only semblance of plot that you get is what's written in the DLC file proper - not in the mission. Mind you, there IS some unique dialogue: there's a map that has Cao Cao, Sun Quan and Shangxiang team up against Liu Bei's crew and they have some special battle quotes. Regardless, I couldn't run those files on Citra, so...

I was working on something (don't worry about it) and a certain character made me come to a realization: I promised I'd translate the Koyasu skit during the Z1 LP and completely forgot about it. So, here it is! Better late than never! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwJ0adZ5YtU And considering this thread hasn't been archived yet and I still have some 3 weeks of free time, I figure I'll post not only that but skits from other games. Simon is the best because he's the only one that's actually helpful in gameplay. Ranka is an NPC and Michael and Nena are enemies (and all of those are poo poo characters regardless, Simon is the only likable one).
|
# ? Jan 22, 2019 16:21 |
|
Ranka is likable early on when she's hustling and trying to get her big break, then Grace/the writers start to jerk her around a lot and she becomes more of a plot device than a character. Also she's connected to Brera and I hate that dull rear end in a top hat. Michael and Nena are little more than sociopaths given big guns and set loose. So yeah, Simon's the best but he's a main character so it feels kinda stacked in his favor.

Michael and Nena are Meisters, but Setsuna does not grant them the title of Gundam. If you told me to describe Ranka without using events or a physical description, I probably couldn't do it. Simon went through a coming-of-age story where he not only came of age, but didn't end up either perfect or broken in the process. Soooo...yeah.

If you were forced to pick between a comprehensive Alpha playthrough (i.e. showing all of the eleventy bajillion tiny dialogue changes, and all of the personalities, on top of the usual play every stage and show every secret stuff), or just your standard LP method for Impact, which one would you rather go for?

If you put a gun to my head and told me to choose, I'd always go with Alpha because it has a lot of fun moments and, overall, I prefer its series list. No gun, I'd still go Alpha, but I absolutely wouldn't go over all the different personalities - probably Kusuha/Bullet for the RKO route and Leona/Tasuku for the Huckie. As far as secrets go, seeing how it's impossible to get everything, I'd just go over the stuff I could get on either characters.

Wow. That was one hell of a ride. Thanks for LPing this Brunom. There certainly are a few things here and there that could have been done better, but this really is an example of how to masterfully craft a crossover story. Even the persisting secret mechanic makes sense within the bounds of the story.
