Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

Seems like they were leaning in hard for including the Angelus in the first game, which would have broadened the scope of the in-game universe quite a bit. I know they ended up using it in the sequel, but that game veers far deeper into it's full comic book identity where it fits a little easier. This first game is kind of its own thing; more of a remix in a lot of ways than a straight adaption. I would have been curious to see how they would have tied the Angelus into the tone of it. I also wonder how far they got into pre-pro before ditching the idea altogether.

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
I can see what they may have been trying to do with the Suicide subplot - Jackie has done so much damage to the world of the living via his lovely lifestyle that nothing he does can ever fix it - however if he takes himself out of the world entirely, he can potentially finally do some good in the next one by destroying The Darkness for good. Reminds me a bit of the similar idea in Nier but that was done much better.

That's actually a pretty good read of the idea, but it requires that the writer realize Jackie is an rear end in a top hat and not an unambiguous hero, which I highly doubt. The fact that Jackie comes back from Hell and doesn't ultimately destroy The Darkness (hope it's not too much of a spoiler to confirm that The Darkness appears in The Darkness 2) all but confirms they didn't put this much thought into the idea, and there's still no justifying "suicide will solve your problems" in your plot unless that plot really digs into what that means.

Yeah, all the Angelus concept art is interesting, as are the pieces of monsters (at least one of which is a 3D model, implying it was drat near making it into the game). They were clearly going for more of a cinematic mafioso experience, and evil angels rarely appear in mob movies (not even Godfather 3), but it sure coulda made the non-Hell segments more interesting.

Huh, I wasn't gonna bother with much more comic talk, but since there's a request, I can talk about the cult I briefly mentioned in the video. Introduced in the very first issue, it's shown to have a base of operations inside the loving statue of liberty and appears to be hundreds of members strong, all of whom are generic hooded silhouettes except for Sonatine, leader of the cult, and Wenders, his personal toady. I mentioned Jackie's refusal to work with the cult, so Sonatine responds by kidnapping Jenny to force his compliance. Jackie's already got the Angelus to deal with, so he has to get... inventive... to save Jenny.

He gets Wenders alone and puts a darkling down his pants, with orders to bite if Jenny isn't safely escorted from the island. Wenders successfully frees her from her shackles and gets her to an escape boat, but Jenny's not the type to just let herself be rescued, so she heads back in for some revenge on Sonatine, spelling certain doom for Wenders.

This is the last we see of Wenders and he is presumed dead as of the end of the first volume. Garth Ennis is off writing duties for the second volume and the comics mercifully move away from the forced celibacy and general juvenile bullshit. Without that burden, the story and characters actually start to move in an interesting direction... until Garth Ennis returns for Volume 3, and brings with him the return of Wenders, not to revive the threat of the cult, but to talk about the loving celibacy poo poo again.

A new low, and it gets worse from there, but the bottom line is, gently caress the comics and gently caress Garth Ennis.

I think the torture scene is way darker but way better than the Jenny death scene. It's still a bunch of edgelord bullshit, but I don't mind people sticking it to Jackie as much, he deserves it, and using gameplay mechanics in the solution is really cool.

So I read through the entire thread just to check, and didn't see it mentioned so

Condoms.

The writers appear to have forgotten that condoms are a loving thing.

Y'know, a prophylactic device that can be worn to prevent pregnancy.

I'd LIKE to believe that this was an intentional thing that reflects poorly on the character (unprotected sex or GTFO), but I have a feeling that this really reflects on the writers instead. Idiots.

malkav11
Aug 7, 2009
Condoms are like...96% effective? That's probably a good rate when you're just talking about maybe getting someone pregnant. Not such a great rate when you'll instantly die if you do. (That was the deal, right? I forget. But otherwise abortion would pretty obviously be on the table also.)

Fiendly
May 27, 2010

Their efficacy is in the high 90s percentile with most failures being due to user error, and even a failure only leads to a small chance of pregnancy if the other person happens to be capable of getting pregnant, which is usually only about a quarter of the time. The writers never bring it up in hopes that no one will notice the obvious plot hole there, or that Jackie could just get a vasectomy. The celibacy clause doesn't stant up to any scrutiny and is mostly just a bad joke

It feels like there's a lot of context missing from our return trip to WWI Hell (Purgatory?). The first time you were there everything's weird but you still have things to shoot so the atmosphere takes over. But when you kind of know what it is and the only thing you really do is a turret section against things that haven't done much previously it just just set off a feeling of "What is even going on here?" Even though I knew the end goal.

Fiendly
May 27, 2010

That's not right!
Switching things up with the WWI areas is a brilliant move, but they obviously didn't have the ideas to sustain an entire second game setting and between the sewer level and the turret segments, they're the worst part of the game. They badly needed something better than "Ride roller coasters to do a fetch quest," like if they had just put the entire level inside the castle and thrown Darklings at you to fight, or even better the monsters they designed and never put in the game. Seems they had to cut a lot, Chapter 4 probably got the worst of it.

Update: Chapter 5-2

So, I had the entire rest of the game recorded weeks ago, then I accidentally deleted a big chunk of the footage I still needed to edit. That meant I had to spend hours recovering a reasonable facsimile of what I'd lost while also being so disgusted that I didn't even want to look at anything LP-related, hence the significant delay. We're past that hurdle now, so here's the penultimate update, as well as the final (and longest) bonus video.

Bonus: Bonus 4

This has not only the last Keeper of Secrets and collectible calls, but also all the random messages you can get by dialing wrong numbers (I think, I found 11 which is a weird number to land on). In total, the extra content consists of 102 pieces of concept art (100 from collectables plus two bonus pictures of the preorder costumes), 10 full issues of various TopCow comics, three script excerpts, and two making-of videos you'll find at the end of the last bonus video. The concept art is all jumbled up in a single menu, it isn't grouped by similar images or added in the order unlocked or anything, so I've done my best to organize it in a way that makes sense right here. Here's what's new with this update:

Extra Content:

Concept - Fortress: Layout and design of the Otherworld castle.
Concept - Otherworld Environment: Otherworld sky and environment concept.
Concept - Otherworld 7: Early environment concept for the look and feel of the Otherworld.
Concept - Darkling 6: Darkling with a very fashionable shirt and tie.

Concept - Ancient Guns 1: Alternative concepts for the Ancient Guns that Jackie finds in the Otherworld.
Concept - Hills Cross 1: A grizzly Otherworld landmark.
Concept - Hills Cross 2: Design for the crucified family, this one is pretty close to what you can find in the Otherworld.
Concept - Otherworld 8: Interior design for an Otherworld building that was never used.

Concept - MP Armor: Concept art for the multiplayer armor item.
Concept - Monster 5: Monster design.
Concept - Monster 6: Sketch of a fearsome monster called Shlogg.
Concept - Monster 7: Another concept drawing of the Shlogg.

Concept - Angelus 4: Concept design for a character called Angelus, later abandoned.
Concept - Angelus 5: Alternate Angelus costume design.
Concept - Angelus 7: An angelus character with noteable similarities with the original TopCow design.
Concept - Otherworld 3: Concept art for the Otherworld castle.

That is a very early game design collectible troll right there.

I read that scene after the massacre less as empathy for the gangsters and more "As bad as they are, Jackie is now even worse." Which is also probably why they didn't let the player do it any of it on their own because it wouldn't have been nearly as effective given consoles and first person shooters :v:

I still have a soft spot for The Darkness but something must have gone seriously right during Butcher Bay for their best single player game to be a quasi movie tie-in. The sequel definitely improved on a lot even if it lost some of strangeness, just that it lost a lot of the bad strangeness too.

(Syndicate's co-op mode is top-of-class but its single player, while good, is entirely generic)
