Russia has a smaller, shittier economy than California, but it is #1 in causing lovely gringos in the US to flip the gently caress out.

*according to official gdp figures, but enough of russia's economy is black/grey market that if you take that into account russia gdp would be much larger

putin definitely keeps a tight leash on russia's wealthy elite to add to his political legitimacy, but that doesn't mean he has actual access to their money. if he did, he'd be richer than Bezos, but he doesn't, so he's not

after a point those super high numbers aren’t that meaningful to distinguish. what is available to Putin as a sort of Tsar is much greater than Bezos

also measuring putin's wealth assumes some kind of anglo-americans notion of property rights in which who owns how much money or how many shares in a company you own is neatly listed on pieces of paper.

there's a great line on the mafia: they don't own things: they own people, they own favors they can call in, they own completely ambiguous shares in certain industries that's based on mutual understanding between partners rather than contracts, it is difficult to put that in monetary terms because exactly how much money putin can call in at any given moment is probably unknown even to him

power is ruling the decayed ruins of the shining city on the hill, but so tenuously that you need multiple stooge opponents just so you can remain king of dead conscript mountain, since the average brain damaged krokodil addict could make a more appealing platform

Indeed the subhuman slavic "people" that make up the oligarchy of Russia are uniquely different in their use of money/power compared to the noble anglo-american west.

Would you like to explain why?

Nah it's better to just call other people idiots and never give a reason why. That way the rest of us might think you really know what's going on.
