Latria. Since we're currently mage-ing it has good magic stuff and it's also in many ways the most of the worlds.

Other than the multi-player feature, Latria also has some good mage stuff. I'd prefer some sort of hybrid character for showing of the game, but there's nothing wrong with starting with pumping up magic a bit.

So Latria wins by a landslide pretty much. Also since I've delayed a bit with these updates, probably won't have enough time to show off as much multiplayer stuff as I would have liked. So I'm going to use that executive override thing I mentioned and do all of Latria to show off one thing in particular. I will post here when I'm recording these bits btw, in case anyone does want to try and invade/help me.

Valley of Defilement would've been my first choice, but Latria's an easy second. Oh man is the atmosphere in both of them perfect.

Subsequent games in the Souls series streamline the game mechanics and improve level design, but none quite nailed the atmosphere and sense of foreboding you get from so many of the levels in this game.

Is it really such a good idea to take the most atmospheric ones first? What are you left with then? I also find that Valley of Defilement has more of an impact, especially the last boss there, if you've already been to a lot of other places and defeated their bosses. That place needs other places to compare to for maximum effect. Personally, I tend to approach Souls games on a treasure finding basis. Places that have the things I want the most gets the first visit.

I always used to go straight for 4-1, because I love skeletons, but I can see why it's vitally important to do 3-3 right away.

Yeah, the former is good for equipment, but the latter is good for magic. You don't even need to clear the former, just picking up some items along the way should leave you with more tools to use. Man it's a shame I didn't see a low SL run of the Valley. 5-1 is easily my most hated level in this game. Yeah I'll no joke take the loving swamp over that ramp bullshit

Stonefang Tunnel is a basic, almost retro-fantasy mine dungeon but it succeeds in that completely, and if you venture off the narrow path, it starts to feel really alien and surreal. Shrine of Storms might actually be my personal favorite, for how utterly physical and dynamic the combat gets, and for perfectly invoking that "timeless land where humans dare not tread" atmosphere. I think they may have been inspired by Metroid and Shadow of the Colossus, respectively.
