Oh. My.

Didn't see a live thread in the forums and I've been asked by a couple Overwatch peeps in the blizz forum to make a thread, so here we are. Welcome to OSU! The free to play rhythm game with gobs of (also free to download) beatmaps ready for you to get your groove on.

Find the game here: https://osu.ppy.sh/p/download

Full disclaimer - I'm absolute poo poo at OSU! but it definitely has improved my overall pc gaming experience (and it's fun as hell to boot). I started playing OSU about a year ago after seeing Surefour play it on stream warming up for Overwatch. I'm 34 and had exactly ZERO pc fps experience before I bought overwatch in season 2 of comp... read: extremely loving bad. After weeing s4 playing osu and getting some time on it myself I improved DRAMATICALLY in shooters (but still sucked rear end at the game and still do), but I've been improving and honestly I truly believe playing OSU has helped considerably. I had played other rhythm games like beatmania in the past but nothing that forced you to use the mouse to aim. OSU combines a lot of simple things into a very fun, challenging game.

If you're not familiar with OSU! it's a fairly barebones rhythm game (with extremely limited PC system requirements, the most basic systems will have no issues running it) tied into your mouse movement and either clicks or keyboard presses. Move your cursor around and click on circles/sliders to the beat, simple right? Well, yes and no. Easier maps are fairly straightforward and simple, and the hardest ones are absolutely brutal. Players who get insanely serious are mostly using drawing tablets for cursor movement along with the keyboard, but that's not what I was going for. I wanted something that would help me learn physical mouse movement translated into screen movement, and that's exactly what I got. When you start getting into the AR7+ range maps start to get much more 'jumpy' (circles far apart on the screen) which directly translates into fps flick competency, and sliders help with controlling tracking movement.

Some basics to get you started. All OSU maps have a listed difficulty rating in both Stars and AR (approach rate). Star rating can be a little off imo, the AR number is the one to look for (for me). AR is how fast the circles close in. It ranges from AR0 through AR10, 10 being fastest. There can be massive jumps in difficulty going up just one AR rating. Other difficulty modifiers include health drain for missed circles, the rate the circles close in, and the diameter of the circles you need to click on. OD (overall difficulty) is arguably the most important in how tough a map is.

Settings
Skins are customizable in Osu! and it's not a bad thing to change. The stock skin has some very annoyingly loud hitsound noises that drive me loving nuts. This is the skin I've been running for the past couple months: https://pentafish.s-ul.eu/Zkpw7VCH . It has a nice click for hits and does way less annoying poo poo than the stock skin. Spinners are not as blatantly obvious but you get used to them fast. He has a new version that I have not checked out yet, may do so tonight.

Detail Settings: Disable background video and Storyboards. That poo poo is insanely distracting

General: Set background dim to 100%. This will start the game with whatever image the beatmap creator put in the background, but once the circles start flying it's on a pitch black screen. I 100% HIGHLY loving RECOMMEND THIS. It makes it so much easier to see the circles it's not even funny.

Mouse: 100% up to you. I tried to get in game sensitivity to mimic my normal OW sens and I think I got it pretty close. In Overwatch I run 3.0 in game / 1200dpi / 6 windows / 1000 polling. For Osu I run the same dpi but am at 1.0 in game with raw mouse input. I have much further mouse movements than most players but it's pretty close to my OW ingame mouse feel (albeit slightly faster. Feels more like 3.0/1600 to me so pretty close). I dropped it lower awhile ago and switched back to 1.0 because the maps were getting much jumpier. I didn't want to go to a 'normal' Osu ingame sens because the whole idea behind playing it for me was to get better at fps games. If you're using this as an aimtraining warmup for fps games try to match whatever you have in your fps game settings. If you're playing Osu to play osu play at a higher one, it def comes in handy when the maps start getting jumpy.

A few things to pay attention to as a new OSU! player:
First and foremost, don't lose your head about missing a circle and oftentimes it's better to miss the next 1-2 to get back on the beat. Trying to catch back up is difficult and you're probably going to miss more doing this than just letting a couple go by.

The biggest one I've seen from people trying the game out is not realizing how important your keyboard RELEASES are. On any slider your release is just as important as your initial press. If you nail the first one then let off you will get a miss and take an HP drain, as well as eliminating your overall combo which is imperative to setting high scores. Treat it just like you do the initial hit! It's huge.

On bouncing sliders you don't need to follow them if they're short enough. Every beatmap has different lengths of sliders and this is something you'll need to try out, but if they're short enough you can do your initial click on them and just keep your cursor stationary until the release. Some maps have bouncing sliders that are just over that length so be careful, but if it's a tiny little one just hold your mouse still and get the duration right and you're golden.

Stacked circles and doubles/triples/++. gently caress em. This was one of the hardest things for me to get used to as I progressed in difficulty (mainly because at that time I was still using my mouse to click instead of z/x). Some map designers love em and they pop up frequently. They're not necessarily a quick triplet either, some are stacked on an offbeat of one measure then start on another offbeat of the next measure. They can be very tricky, but the way to keep tabs on it is to watch how the large circles close in on the one you hit. That will show you how quickly the next hit will come.

Here's some of my fav maps along with gameplay of a poo poo player (me! :suicide: )

Starting off on the easier end, cYsmix - Dovregubben's Hall (I love cYsmix's music bigtime, check them out on soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/olemlanglie )
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/793191
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAKVjHgT_uQ
Has some triplets but doesn't get too nuts. Laid back and not too many offbeat hits

AK X LYNX ft. Veela - Virtual Paradise
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1056415
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mSBI61m8-8
Always loved Veela's voice, great song. Deceptively difficult, changes to offbeat hits frequently. Watch out for the stacked doubles/triples.

Demetori - Shoujo Satori ~ Innumerable Eyes
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/654922
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsRDteuwEPc
One click adventure! Not many doubles or trips but this one has your left hand working overtime. Anyone who's played Touhou will recognize the song, Demetori kicks rear end and so does this map. Great warmup, and the map I discovered my z key was starting to take a poo poo on

Yunomi - Wakusei Rabbit (feat. TORIENA)
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1170747
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUflfsqI-jk
Fast paced, drop section is nuts

Yuyoyuppe - AiAe
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/589971
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWYBPwEHnvg
Getting a little tougher. Still not bad but has many triplets at the end of the song.

Fox Stevenson - Turn It Up (Higher)
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/298037
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_yBUuCiBeQ
Getting quite a bit tougher. Slightly jumpy, fast, and super fun. Song is great as well. Love this map.

Rob Gasser - Taking Over (feat. Miyoki)
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1250719
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amDsloXH7uE
I have no loving idea how, but I cleared this AR8.5 map (extremely poorly) on the first try. This is my... fourth, fith? attempt at it and it's still bad. Extremely jumpy, amazing song. I have not heard of Rob Gasser before this map, he's got a ton of music on Spotify and it's all solid. Worth a listen/play for sure. This is the type of map that makes me reconsider my ingame sens but gently caress it.

cYsmix - Manic
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/793620
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRu9cK2CNbk
One of the hardest maps I've (finally) beaten. Jumpy, fast, streams, it's got it all. By far my fav cYsmix song.

I will post some of my other fav maps a bit later but that covers a lot of different ground when it comes to overall bpm and map design. I tend to fall in the AR7.5-AR8.5 range on stuff I can actually beat. AR9.0 has not happened yet but I'm getting close.

As for how Osu translates into fps games... Well, it's complicated. There's many Overwatch pros who use Osu as a warmup, there's many OW pros who say it's completely worthless. I fall somewhere in the middle. I think Osu is a fantastic tool for newer fps players to simply get used to moving the mouse to a target. I know it's helped me out tremendously and I don't have any reason to stop playing it anytime soon (I still suck at fps games, and I find Osu incredibly fun to play). I can say this - I generally keep my place at a low temp during the winter for utility savings. It's 68* in my computer room at the moment. Osu is FANFUCKINGTASTIC at LITERALLY warming up your right arm/hand and left hand. If you've watched any of the Overwatch League streams I'm sure you've noticed the players constantly using heatpacks on their hands between rounds... same effect. Having your limbs and extremities physically warm helps tremendously when you get into any fps game. As for the pure mechanics of the game? I don't think they help much at all other than for newer fps players (which I definitely fall under that category). If you're an fps god you'll probably not get much out of this game. If you're new to fps games I think you should try it and see how it reflects in your in game performance. I know it helped me! It's free anyway, give it a shot and post your thoughts!

e: lol shitpost tag. I haven't made a new thread in way too long :v:. Fixed Fox Stevenson - Turn It Up (Higher) vid link

I also finally picked up Osu earlier this year after watching Effect warm up with it. It's fun and really gets me into a zone playing it, but I am not great at it to say the least. I do like finding songs that are outside the typical super-high-BPM Japanese style, like some epic classical pieces.

It should be illegal to hide another beat completely under the end of a slider, that poo poo trips me up every time for whatever reason.

That's a pretty crazy map on insane! I've never seen sliders that long going that fast before, makes the hp drain a bitch too because there's so few circles at the beginning. Here's one you might like, super fun, slowish jumpy piano song: RADWIMPS - Katawaredoki https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1285526

Agreed about stacked beats. That poo poo drives me bonkers, but one thing it did teach me was to watch the 'close in' circles closely to see how fast I needed to click again.

Some more super fun maps. I'll upload runs on them later if anyone wants to see em

Panda Eyes & Teminite - Highscore
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/736217
A must play. If you want to see just how bad you are at the game watch Cookiezi's Game Over replay :fuckoff:

dj TAKA - quaver
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/979199
Another must play, basically any map by Monstrata is going to be wild

Ella Eyre - Good Times
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1475358
Slider/triplet city. Love Eyre's voice

DJ Fresh (feat. Rita Ora) - Hot Right Now (Radio Edit)
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/539531
Probably one of the hardest AR7.5's out there. Offbeats a plenty

yuikonnu - caramel heaven
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/821287
194bpm jpop O.o

BTS - FIRE
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/1052277
Slow af k-rap, jumpy as poo poo

Helblinde - Putin's Boner
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/766204
Absolute must play, it's loving hilarious.

Never noticed there was an osu thread until now. I still play a lot of osu, although I took a bit of a break recently. For anyone who wants to add me: https://osu.ppy.sh/users/9342750, just post here or msg me in game that you are a goon and I'll mutual you.

I've hit a pretty big wall at ~25k (4.2k-ish pp) that I can't seem to get past. All my plays are either good acc chokes or awful acc fc's :v:

needknees posted:

I play with tablet but honestly mouse is also fine. But if you play enough osu and want to try a tablet, the cheap tablets don't cost much more than like $20-$30. I use a XP-Pen G430 and while I've thought about buying a nicer tablet I don't think it would actually make me any better at osu. The "official osu tablet" is just a branded huion H420 which runs at around the same price point. I've never tried one but they are also supposed to be fine. Back when I bought my tablet I went just with the G430 because of the passive (no battery) pen.

As far as maps go, I can't really comment on any of the 3* diffs because it's been forever since I played them, but here's a couple of my favorite 4* maps:
DJ Genericname - Dear You
Reol - Asymmetry

Thanks for the tips and maps! I can't imagine being at that pp level, I was stoked to hit 616pp the other day LOL.

I've gotten a bit better since I made this thread, still playing with a mouse at my stupid low sens (1200dpi/1.0 in game) and managed to beat some 5.5* maps (one on my first try :wtf:, didn't deserve it but struggle through). Been playing mostly 4.2-5.0 maps lately. I love jumpy maps but they're hilarious with the sens I play at, at points I'm moving my mouse over a foot to hit another circle. Guess I'm getting a workout while playing! I still struggle hardcore on faster single taps and doubles, since apparently my brain can't make my fingers slow down enough to use both. Faster trip/quads and streams aren't too much trouble but if it's too quick for me to single tap it I'm at a loss :(

e: holy poo poo Dear You is a super fun map! Here's my pathetic second attempt at it (first time through the second longer stream got me hah) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSlortGg0Jk

If you want to lower the distance you have to move your mouse for big jumps without changing your mouse sens, you could try lowering the osu resolution but turning on the "letterboxing" option to make the osu play area smaller. Using the letterboxing option draws black borders around the outside, so that the osu window stays at your monitor's native resolution, but the actual game UI is only drawn in the center at the smaller resolution. If you do this, make sure "map absolute raw input to osu window" is disabled, otherwise you won't actually change the distance you have to move your mouse for cross-screen jumps.

Also super jumpy lol. Animation is such a great song, happy to have finally beat the difficulty I was going for. This was the second run of the day! The first stream is tough for me and the 'dead zone' in the middle of the map with few circles to hit is a huge hp drain, somehow managed.

Generally people just use 1.0 sens in game and adjust the active tablet area to whatever size you want via tablet drivers. So in your case I think you would set in game sens to 1.0 and reduce the tablet area to about half what it is now? Also make sure you have raw input turned on in game. If you play in a window or letterboxed fullscreen, you will probably want to also enable the "map absolute raw input area to osu window" option. Alternatively, depending on your tablet, you may be able to map the area to a specific region of your monitor using the tablet drivers, in which case I think you want to disable the "map absolute area" in game option.

Basically you will want to just play around with different tablet areas and different ways of holding your pen until you find something that's comfortable for you. When I switched from mouse to tablet it took me a couple of weeks to adjust before I could comfortably play the same level of maps that I could w/mouse, but afterwords my tablet aim in osu improved a lot faster than I had been improving with mouse (obviously ymmv). My tablet area is ~3"x2.25" but it's really up to personal preference.

If you want to see what the top players use for tablet areas there's this reddit thread w/spreadsheet from a couple years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/osugame/comments/3oc0q8/as_promised_second_part_of_the_real_tablet_areas/

You need a cursortrail.png in your skin folder. If you find a skin with a cursor+trail that you like you can copy all of the cursor related pngs into another skin's folder (you can mix and match other skin elements doing this as well).

Also hitorigoto/soliloquy is tilting because it's an easy farm map that for whatever reason I can't FC, and also because after that mapset first released it got spammed like crazy in every multi lobby for months.

Oh. My.
Pretty proud of this one I knocked out a couple days ago. Plenty of stupid mistakes but not bad on a map that's pretty tough for me

I had probably the my most tilting moment of my time playing osu ever yesterday. Got less than 10s from the end of this beast of 6+ minute a map and loving choked, hard

https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/397905/#osu/865344

I just gently caress around on that to get some work on jumps (and the fact I love Muzzy's music), never thought I'd ever come close to getting through it. I think about the longest I'd made it was something around a minute and a half in. For some reason poo poo was clicking awesome yesterday and I was nailing the jump sections and just kept going and going. Knew I was getting super close to the end and just froze the gently caress up, it was so incredibly frustrating I had to stop playing, lol.

Anyone enjoying certain maps? I've been using tillerino and it's had some great suggestions but I have a tendency to keep coming back to my favorites.

/e: I've officially worn out my first pen nib am I a pro? :suicide: (not in the slightest I just press way the gently caress to hard)
/e#2: I loving love this map! https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/287426/#osu/660622

Oh. My.
I'm still a filthy (high) 6 digit but pretty loving happy to finally break the 1k mark today!

I never really worried about rank and still don't, but started to hit enough good runs it just kinda happened. Would much rather play a map I can barely get through and not get any pp than try and farm. Still feels pretty goddamn good :)

drat! Nice dude, I can barely get through expert on that mapset lol. The struggles of being a lovely singletapper!

Pretty proud of this one though, def didn't think I'd be getting through 5.72* maps anytime soon. Actually cleared it on my sightread run which shocked the hell out of me. Took a few more tries to get this:

Horizontal jumps still kill me, and this one has a lotta em. Gotta get those misses down!

Finally managed to not choke on one of my favorite maps in the game

That play is barely worth any PP for me because bad acc, but it's still my longest combo so I'll take it
