Akuma posted:I don't know about that, if anything it seemed like the opposite to me, it looked very forced and contrived that she would gently caress up sitting down because she was drunk but they kept it anyway. I think I read somewhere that the day after they filmed that scene, Kate Siegel found out she was pregnant and they'd been practicing her falling down over and over again, so I'm fairly certain it was scripted. Edit: Found it: it was the day before they filmed. https://www.businessinsider.com/making-of-netflixs-the-haunting-of-hill-house-episode-6-2018-11 https://twitter.com/flanaganfilm/status/1059105688541118464 Patrovsky fucked around with this message at 14:08 on Nov 6, 2018 |

Shirley's line "She's falling on the goddamn ground and I'm embarrassing myself?" is maybe strong evidence that it was scripted, also.

That's why I love directors. "I was concerned about having my pregnant wife plummet hard to the floor multiple times, risking giving my unborn child life long damage just for a tv show. " "Not concerned enough to makes changes to the scene mind you, but you know, still pretty concerned."

Really enjoyed this show. I’d say it peaked at episodes 5 & 6, though it was pretty solid throughout. Mostly I was more just feeling bad for the characters (especially the dad and Nell) instead of feeling scared or whatever. Stephen was a prick until the end though.

I really think that's what they were going for, while it has a few jump scares here and there it really is more of a tragic family story than a straight up horror show.

Aside from the jump scares, I personally thought the creepy moments were genuinely creepy. Though it probably helped that I watched this by myself, alone, in the dark, with headphones on. Also, even the RedLetterMedia guys highly recommend the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDM0k_EZ8SU

I decided to watch this again to show my friends, and unfortunately I don't think it holds up as well on a second viewing. First time through I was hooked on every scene because of anticipating what might happen, but without that tension it does seem to drag at several points. The top-heavy structure of the season becomes more apparent as well, with episodes 1-6 being significantly more creepy and engaging. In the remaining four episodes there are a lot of extended monologue scenes, which, while they are certainly well-acted, are a huge case of telling instead of showing which doesn't seem to be present in eps 1-6. Much of the scare scenes early on seem kind of arbitrary, such as the kittens and the basement zombie ghost. However I still do feel that it's a great family drama and I think the ending is fine, I would not have wanted it to end on a downer ending or any other way really. This is also why, if I enjoy a show or movie, I generally wait years before rewatching.
