I think the overall idea was that the way the monsters affected people was gradually evolving to get around the problem of people being blindfolded all the time. Going to have to succumb to the tiny robot pressure and watch this bloody film to see what's different from the book. Which means tiny robot's methods are evolving as well...

The insane people were just a plot device to put some pressure on these guys to leave the house and go outside. Just think of it like your mother nagging you to leave the house and go outside once in a while.
