True reality is on this side of the screen

They're just spells that take all of your AP, will do a fixed max damage if your AP was full (welps do 256, adults do 512 and giga/Kaiser does 999) otherwise it does a pitiful amount. The different elements are purely cosmetic as they'll always do the same damage not matter what is used.

If you build Township with the normal houses and use its restaurant to create a large amount of wisdom fruits you can spam them pretty well otherwise they're not much use.

Pretty much this. It's the only one that uses this system (though I'm not a fan of Dragon Quarter's either).

At least it added some new effects and spells. But things like Kat's magic problem always irked me.

Please don't skip BoF2, I remember that game very fondly and even as a kid I could see the quantum leap in quality between it and the first game. I mean, I know all games were like this back then, but it's still pretty amazing to see how bare bones Breath of Fire 1 is. In BoF2 I clearly remember characters having personalities and their own story arcs, and there being villains with clear motivations beyond, "Haha, I'm evil!" *transforms into a palette swapped toad boss*

Then I won't skip it! As mentioned it'll be a background project for a bit, but gives me time to get proper resources for it.

Episode #31 - Kneel Before Zog

It's time. We attack Scande, the Capital of the Dark Dragons this episode! But a broken elevator stands in our way. The mysterious stranger helps us find a dragon slaying weapon in Tunlan, and we grab a few more upgrades for the hero. The battle against Zog won't be easy, but why does this raid feel so convenient?

Jade probably goes to a lot of concerts (debates?) in Tunlan!

He's been looking for a way to overthrow Zog covertly so it can be himself that frees the goddess. Likely he was searching for something lethal to use and came across it, but was too dangerous/obvious to use it himself. Along comes the hero itching to fight Zog, so who better to have use the Dragon Heart? Jade was probably hoping the Emperor and Hero would kill each other in the battle. Instead we were left for dead in a pit.

I just saw this and caught up and all I have to say is that while Brix transforming into a dragon is certainly flashy the numbers seem to be telling me that transforming into horrifying flesh amalgamations makes Karn the actual hero around here.

Episode #32 - Sibling Rivalry

With the mole people free, we venture out to find a legendary artifact belonging to them. Jade attempts to unseal the goddess Tyr, so we rush into the depths of the Pagoda after him. In our way however, is our sister Sara who's struggling to regain control of herself.

Sara literally only has the fire breath and the lightning storm as moves. Her large HP pool makes it a boring fight to slog through, and I get to show why the D.Hrt is more effectively used here. Sorry if people were disappointed I didn't show it off, but it's pretty meh to watch

There is a reason for this. A plot-based reason for this. Is it enough of a reason to not make it a bit better than it is? No. But there is a very important, plot-based reason for why this is a thing they decided to do.

Also, saw someone say they don't remember the fishing in BoF2 and almost cried. It's what most SNES fishing games wished they could be and also what a lot of indie pixel games like to emulate even now. Is it the best? No. But it's decent and memorable. EQUIP LOD/BAIT

There is a well-translated version of the game, however it changes a lot of aspects of the game that make it rather dislikable (imo). One of those things is changing the windows to be hideous (the menu in particular looks horrible). Another is changing some of the character names. Yes, we know she's supposed to be called that but ffs, they could have just left her name as is. And the others who got 'fixed'.

That said, I do recommend checking it out anyway because apparently they also made some QoL changes too.

A bit more on-theme, I do like a lot of aspects of BoF1. It has a lot of charm despite its issues and some of the story segments are nice touches. It doesn't try to get too deep into things, whilst still throwing a few shocks your way, and that can be nice to just play through and breeze over. You're not going to be heavily invested in the story and characters like in the future games, but you still have a nice time playing. It's a good gate-way jRPG to reel people in and get them used to general jRPG systems. Maybe a bit weird at points, but cute and interesting and a bit different to a lot of games you find yourself playing nowdays. Just, fantasy world with various badass and cute animalistic peoples who are trying to help you save your sister and maybe the world while you're at it. Fun times.

I'm also making my way through the series streaming the games (finished 2 not long ago, taking a short break with Okami, then back to it with 3) and I was surprised at how well it held up despite being such an old game. Same as 2, which is one of my favourite games ever (and reaffirmed as such after replaying yet again, though this time with an audience XD), they're just surprisingly decent jRPGs with a fair amount of heart and charm. They do things a little different to shake up the FF/DQ formula of that time and it's easy to see why they became so well-loved and gained a cult following.

Yeah, the first few BoF games weren't the greatest by any means, but they do have some surprisingly cool ideas in 'em for their time.

I do appreciate the kinda quaint, relatively straightforward plot of the first game. It's got all the classic elements you'd expect from an rpg, with enough of its own unique flavor and twists to keep it interesting. It's understandable why it gets overshadowed by the other, flashier rpgs of the era, though. The first game does a lot of things pretty well, but it never quite reaches the point of being "great" at anything. It is a shame that the series seems to have fizzled away. The premise is interesting enough, and there's enough baked in lore and fanbase that they could probably still make a pretty cool new game if they had the right team on it.

You make a very good point: BoF was a great intro to jRPG's with it's softer game style and bright animal art. Many of it's game elements have been done to death now, but things like Karn's fusion were pretty new and innovative. Games like FFIV went deeper into character's stories, but BoF made (some of) them more interactive with leader abilities and such. If players stuck past the slog that is the Nina vs Lich tower, most have fond memories of playing this as a kid. I quite like 2 and 3 is certainly my favorite. Mentioned more than once how eager I am to get to LPing that one.

I sadly get the feeling the BoF series will be shelved for 10ish years before we get the 'timely nostalgia' reboot. Dragon Quarter got a lot of mixed feelings with how much it changed up the system. BoF6 went the microtransaction MMO route, which really soured the hardcore fans and was apparently crap anyways. Waiting till people just forget about all the bad decisions they've made wouldn't be the worst route for Capcom.

The series tends to not have you fight a lot of dragons, but make it more epic/important when you do. Now that you mention it, I'm really surprised there isn't some kind of bard in any of the games. Later games will use swords and such that have anti-dragon properties (eg. 1.5x damage), and it's odd that this one doesn't since it does have weapons that do 1.5x damage to demon foes.

Speaking of using enough attacks that would destroy a town, just wait 2 episodes...

Yeah, I didn't even realize BoF6 was a thing, but eesh, the "microtransaction MMO route" sounds like the worst possible route to take. No wonder I hadn't heard of it. Dragon Quarter is also a pretty interesting game, and it's pretty similar to the older games in that it's got some really interesting ideas, and in some ways a bit ahead of its time, but they still didn't quite pull their ambitious plan off. Quite the shame.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took the wrong message from BoF6 bombing. Instead of the obvious fact that "route" they chose is just awful, they probably blamed it on nobody giving a poo poo about the Breath of Fire series, which isn't entirely true.

Maybe if I called it 'Interpretive Stabbing'...
Capcom goes in cycles that way. Lose money for a while, executives throw up their hands and let creative off the leash, we get a spat of good, often revolutionary games (see also RE4). Then the Capcom Sequel Cycle kicks in and we have 5 or so years of solid games with diminishing quality, until finally everything sucks for a few years and then the cycle renews.

That said BoF has been dormant so long it’s an open question if anyone in creative knows or cares.

Using the skills and tools gained from the mole quest last episode, we enter the floating dungeon of Obelisk. The last lieutenant, Goda fiercely defends his master and blocks our path. Confronting Jade after all this time may not be as easy as we hoped as he's now been gifted power from the Goddess...

As far as I can tell, that bug only affects Golem and Gloom. I'm curious if it had a similar bug in the Japanese version.

Jade's a push over using Agni. Trying to fight him without, it is *much* more difficult.

It's not until the next game they discuss "that" connection, and really flesh it out more in 3. I'm not sure if "that" had been discussed even by the game writers this early (though the original language version might hint at it somewhere I missed). You have to admit though: Going back to sleep goes with her character in this game.

Yeah, that final boss fight was disappointing. There's basically zero risk once you're in Agni form, it's just a matter of whittling down her HP and occasionally using a healing item. Very similar to the first boss of the game actually, only even less dangerous. It's a function of dragon forms being very overpowered in BoF1. The tradeoffs for more power with the higher mana cost maintenance in BoF3 feels much better. But we'll see BoF2's dragon forms first, which imho are just as bad as the ones in BoF1, just for different reasons.

I'd also not be surprised to learn that the devs/writers didn't work out the details and backstory of Bleu at this point, and just developed them over the next games.

Boy you really have to work to get the bad ending here. "Use Agni!" "Eh..." "Use Agni!!" "EEeEeehhhhh..." I guess I can appreciate when a game doesn't try and trick you into getting the bad ending after hours and hours. Anyways I can definitely see charm shining through the rough even if it seems they couldn't get all the character stuff they wanted, both heroes and villains. I never had the inclination to play these games when I was young and don't really have the time now so I'm glad I got to see it.
