Fingers crossed it is an MMORPG, but something tells me it won’t be and instead it’ll be either a tradable card game, or battle royale.

I said come in! posted:Fingers crossed it is an MMORPG, but something tells me it won’t be and instead it’ll be either a tradable card game, or battle royale. I imagine Riot's got enough business smarts to avoid oversaturated markets, and battle royale/card games are still in vogue enough to make it dangerous to try and stake a claim. Card games are an especially big problem due to the amount of money you need to invest to become competitive in them (or, in some cases, to even enjoy them casually). An MMO's actually more likely than the other options simply because it's got plenty of prime real estate available. The days of studios pumping out AAA MMOs every year has long since past. Aside from WoW (and possibly Lineage/BDO - I haven't checked the Korean numbers in a long while), there's next to no big name competition, with the remaining MMOs either pulling in modest numbers (FFXIV averages around 300-400k, last I checked, and I suspect Destiny and its ilk are close to the same) or shutting their doors entirely. Even then, the cracks are starting to show for WoW: it's running on an old and haggard engine and its fundamental design has become worn out over successive expansions. Legion gave it a shot in the arm, but BfA has likely reverted almost all of its gains. There's room for a company with the money and development clout to move in and make the next big thing for the genre.

A League MMO is what everyone in the world wants. Riot has the money, the market, and Daddy Tencent also has the Chinese market in its grasp as well.

Senor Dog posted:does LoL have lore and stories and poo poo? oh god are there LoL books? The Reddit post points out that Riot has undertaken a massive expansion of the lore over the last few years, which is a weird move for a game that takes place 95% on one map.

On the skeptical side, I will say that the lore revamp could easily have a far more generic origin: Riot realized they had a highly marketable IP and decided to do the legwork in making it presentable for broader consumption. To me, it's never been a question of there eventually being another League-related title, but what form it would take has always been up in the air. Still, there's a lot going in favor of it being an MMO. It's a genre with broad worldwide appeal for an IP that's meant to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. There's samurai, pirates, steampunks, Norse barbarians, old timey knights, furries, magical girls, and chuuni demons all crammed together into a single universe. You'd have a hard time not hitting at least one aesthetic button for a potential player interested in customization. The fact that two of their more recent special event modes (Star Guardians and Odyssey) featured MMO-style boss battles at the end smells a lot like developers testing ideas more than an inspired bit of creativity.

It's not hard info or anything but Riot has been making a hilarious amount of profit on League for a long time. There's no law that says a company with one immensely successful product has to make another, or even attempt to, but it wouldn't be particularly wild speculation to say that Riot has probably been prototyping things for years and either discarding or shelving things they didn't like. The stuff presented in that post would be a pretty compelling source for "something bigger than a round-based game" and frankly if anyone in the world has the money and the backing (Tencent) at this point to make a full on, successful Western MMO launch ever again, it'd be someone like them.

As much as I now detest the moba genre, I got hooked on LoL way back when because it had a fun and engaging look and feel. I think I'd be down to try out an MMO in this setting, so long as it doesn't look horrendous in the trailers or something.

It will be one of these: 1. A voxel-based PVP-centric fashion crafting experience. You make your pretty princess dresses and compete on the runway for fabulous prizes. You are also allowed to cut someone if you can get away with it. 2. A trading game based on items seized from actual delinquent storage reclamations (*but renamed to fantasy items - no old TV's, those would be translated to say, old mysterious chamber pots). Imagine fantasy-based wizard pawnshop owners competing over boxes of ancient porn and buckets of wooden spoons. As before, stealth stabbing and poisons are allowed during certain auctions. 3. A boring old MMO

The heads of the studio are various kinds of psychopath and sociopath monsters running a dev puppy mill powered by sexual assault. Nothing good will come of this. Also they run a quasi religious cult built on exploiting university students for positive press.

https://www.riotgames.com/en/work-with-us/jobs Riot already announced they are working on a fighting game, but they are hiring now for a unnannounced R&D product that requires Unreal Engine knowledge. Hmmm

lol at the thought of working at Riot. No thank you, I don't want having my balls grabbed as one of the requirements for every single role at the company.

Spam Musubi posted:Riot just updated the league client to become the Riot Client. Looks like it will support multiple games. What's known for certain is that there's a fighting game in the works by the people who made Rising Thunder (who got bought out by Riot years ago). There's likely at least one other project that's in the works, judging by how Ghostcrawler was moved off of the live team to headline internal development, but it's all pretty hush-hush. I wouldn't expect any major announcements until late next year, if not 2021.
