The "LOL League" was a shitposting group for some of French media's most popular Twitter users, where they would coordinate abuse against women, people of color, and the LGBT community.

A secret group of mainly male French journalists have been accused of coordinating a sprawling, yearslong campaign of harassment abusing women writers, feminist activists, people of color, and LGBT people.

The group, Ligue du LOL, or LOL League, has been operating for about a decade. So far, three journalists have been suspended, one has resigned, and one has been fired since the accusations were made public online. People working at four of France's biggest news outlets have been implicated.

The LOL League started as a Facebook group in 2009 by journalist Vincent Glad, who now works at one of France's largest newspapers, Libération. The group operated as a shitposting space for people in French journalism and advertising who were popular on Twitter.

Journalist Melanie Wanga tweeted that she was chased off Twitter by the LOL League in 2013. She described an inner circle of LOL League members surrounded by "cool girls" in French media who protected them and helped them pretend to be liberal and progressive in public.

Facebook Group of French Journalists Harassed Women for Years

PARIS — The rumors had been out there for years: A private Facebook group that included many up-and-coming French male journalists was behind waves of online insult, mockery and harassment aimed at women in the business.

Now, with confirmation that a group that called itself the Ligue du LOL existed, it is a moment of reckoning about sexism in the French news media, an insular and still male-dominated industry in a country where the #MeToo movement has met with some resistance.

Some of the men behind the group, whose name means the League of LOL, have issued apologies, and several have been suspended from their jobs.

The Ligue du LOL Facebook group had about 30 members, many of whom are now established journalists, advertising executives, podcasters or bloggers.

Rumors about it had circulated in the French media for years. But its existence was made public only last week, when Libération’s fact-checking department, responding to a question from a reader, published a piece documenting its activities.

Among them were Alexandre Hervaud, a senior web editor at Libération, and David Doucet, the editor in chief of the cultural magazine Les Inrocks. Stephen des Aulnois, who admitted making a pornographic photo montage of Ms. Marx, stepped down as editor in chief of the erotic web review Le Tag Parfait.

Many of these journalists worked at left-wing publications.
