I don't think you could accomplish what we want in 12 episodes. I think 4 cours, each covering the same period of time, but from different perspectives, would be the best. Kazusa, Sonezaki, Hongo, and finally Momo.

Coming to this late, and surprised to come out with the most positive take. This is the best Mari Okada anime I've seen. I can see some arguments that maybe Momoka didn't get enough resolution in her arc, but I didn't feel like much was left on the table that needed to be explored by the end. Its overall a story about awkward teens going through awkward feelings about sex, so if everything was tied up with a bow it would feel wrong, in my opinion. That said, the short epilogue scenes were appreciated and answered lingering questions I had. Really glad Milo continued being a solid dude and did the right thing. Well, overall, it was alright. Kinda feel like it didn't do as much as it could've, but oh well. I'm probably the only person who likes Nina by the end. Anyone read the manga? It has gorgeous art and neat panelling. And I feel like a lot of comedic scenes are also better there. But unfortunately scanlations stopped at chapter 17 (which is more or less halfway through the series)

If there's just one or two people translating a manga, then there's a fair chance they started out of love for the original material, and when a legit option hits the market, they actually want it supported. It's nowhere near a guarantee, especially with the wealth of motives in scanlation, but O Maidens does strike me as one that's more likely than average to get people who care about that kind of thing.

I liked this show but I do have a question. Is it unusual to have a lesbian in a non porn anime? I thought Japan was pretty anti-homo and was pleasantly surprised to see it handled so well.

I am by no means an authority on this so I may say something wrong here but Japanese culture has a very weird/interesting history with LGBTQ rights and media depiction. The stereotype I used to understand is that they largely didn't care about the depiction of gay relationships in that, hey, "it's a fad. They'll grow out of it and make families and babies it's cool." So there wasn't an explicit ban, but it was seen as deviant and out of step with society and they'll come to their senses soon enough. The right wing government of Japan currently, well, I don't know enough about their politics to say anything specific but I'd imagine Shinzo Abe isn't a big LBGTQ advocate to put it lightly. Admittedly, when I deep dived into anime I was surprised to see how common gay/implied relations were. Short list of stuff I've seen that specifically has m/m w/w (the latter is depressingly more common for the reasons you think) Serial Experiments Lain Sailor Moon* (the dub infamously made them cousins... which, yeah) Kill la Kill Bloom into You** Yuri on Ice* ** I hear Beastars has m/m, but I've yet to watch it SSSS.Gridman*** Citrus* ** Promare*** Liz and the Blue Bird**, I think, but I haven't watched it poo poo I had a longer list in my head but the names escape me. To be fair some of those are minor (Kill la Kill only drops some minor hints until the end) and ones that, say, could be written around cleverly to censor them. Bloom into You very specifically brings up the 'fad' notion and briefly delivers one of the biggest 'gently caress you' to said notion mid season. *things I don't plan on watching but know about. ** very core to the show *** only slightly more ambiguous than ** but still core On Maidens, I feel I liked it more than most of the admittedly only slightly more pessimistic impressions of the full season. I don't have much to say about it right now, but I will say one of my stand out favorite moments is when Izumi has to specifically declare his romantic and physical attraction separately. You really don't see that kind of lesson in general, I feel. And that poo poo's complicated. Edit: \/ Meant to add Utena, though it's another show I haven't gotten around to seeing. There's also Stars Align this season, but also... haven't started that yet. They make a lot of these things, don't they? Oh  , and Modaka Magica.. How could I forget?

I would add Utena to that list and other things by Kunihiko Ikuhara too. Also heard that a lot of Clamp's series have lgbt undertones, even though they don't focus on romance.

Japan is "anti-homo" in the sense that their ruling party is conservative with limpdick opposition, but on an individual level LGBT issues poll with or trending towards majority support, and people have achieved gains for stuff like same-sex unions and gender expression in schools on local/individual levels. Earlier this year there was huge backlash to a politician complaining about "unproductive" people like gays and lesbians. This is expanding beyond just "anime" but there's a good amount of stuff handling those issues as well as authors who openly identify as gay/lesbian even given a lot of manga authors' preference for privacy.

The impression I've always gotten is that sex isn't the main friction point like it is in the West. A gay fling isn't a big deal as long as you eventually straighten up, and have a family.
