Escape From Noise

I thought of making this thread a bit ago until I got internet in my apartment. And finally, after about a month and a half of waiting I DO! I wanted to make a thread for everyone to share weird art/artsy or just odd rear end videos, animation, and the like. I'm thinking mostly on the shorter side but of course it may branch out in other directions and that's something that I'm very okay with.

Shaye Saint John

Shaye St. John was the creation of an artist named Eric Joseph Fournier. The character is supposed to be a supermodel who was hit by a train and wears a mask and weird wooden appendages to maintain her beauty. There's a whole weird story behind it involving the FBI and brainwashing or something. He started to create the character in 2006 or so with a LiveJournal account and later started making videos which he'd package together in DVD collections and the like until his death in 2010. At some point there was also a website but I believe it is no longer up.

I'm a big fan of these videos and for some reason they crack me up. They're like some sort of pre-Adult Swim/Tim and Eric absurdist video art comedy.

The first Shaye St. John video ever made called Stumpwater Salad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWzwv1kzg5M

Some people stumble across the video Hand Thing and get freaked the gently caress out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RcQpRRShDw

Shaye also is on the internet 24/7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ch3zslRlbA

There are a TON of videos. Some of them are fake Shaye's created by fans but I kind of think they're noticeable. For the most part. Eric Fournier's friend Eric Wessel made a documentary about him and Shaye as well.

Don't Hug Me. I'm Scared

Probably at least FAIRLY well known but Don't Hug Me. I'm Scared is a weird kind of kids show looking series of videos that have absurd and disturbing elements added in. There are 6 episodes that were produced. I do think the 6th episode is kind of weak because it tries to turn the series into a more cohesive story. I dunno. I felt it was kind of shoehorned in, but overall it's a neat series of strange videos.

Episode 1:

Alantutorial

Alan Resnick's probably first video series he made on YouTube. A series of nonsensical tutorials made by Alan Tutorial (for all of his Tutirialheads). If watched in order they form an overall narrative. Kind of an absurd horror comedy of sorts. A long watch but a good one.

https://youtu.be/haLhzoYSyfw

Malice In Wonderland

A psychedelic independent animated short from 1982 based loosely on Alice In Wonderland. Slightly NWS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv8IezFbADc

Quasi at the Quackadero

A short animation by Sally Cruikshank who was an animator for Sesame Street. This film has been placed in the National Film Registry. It's a neat little piece!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH7LcVNusQE

Barfight

A short animation by Christy Karakas, creator of Superjail!, not sure if that's a thing people here enjoy but...it's a wild ride!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyXfKPTyoT0

Well that's it for now from me! Anyone else got anything? Feel free to post and share!

oh man, fantastic planet is, XD, fantastic:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgCxCZNkQ9E

it's surreal, visually interesting, and has this pre-lynch lynchian atmosphere going on that rules. it's a french movie but it's one of the rare instances where the awful english dub actually enhances the weird rear end vibe the movie has.

Escape From Noise

Fantastic Planet is one of those movies I've meant to see for a while.

My Wrongs 8245-8249 & 117

A BAFTA winning short film by Chris Morris (The Day Today, Brass Eye, Four Lions) based on a radio sketch from his bizarre radio program Blue Jam. It's basically about a disturbed man who is informed by his friend's dog that he is on trial for mistakes from his childhood and that the dog is representing him in court. It's really strange/good stuff.

This case of an intraperitoneal zucchini is unusual, and does raise questions as to how hard one has to push a blunt vegetable to perforate the rectum.
Did you grow up on 80s cartoons?

Dragon’s Heaven is a short, one shot anime about a nuke armed mech seeking vengeance against a nuke armed robot. It’s unique in a few ways- first, the intro and closing consist of live action video of these huge, shambling models of shaian and elmedine (the mech and robot, respectively) sort of shuffling around in a fog machine. Second, the animation itself is really beautifully drawn and gives me a very moebius vibe. Also the music is good. I long to see this in HD but it’s so obscure I don’t think it’s ever had any kind of western release.

Oh boy, this thread is extremely my poo poo!

First off, an adaptation of one of my favorite Jorge Luis Borges stories, the Aleph. The animation here is very trippy and abstract. A bit like the video for Autechre's "Gantz Graf". Might be good to watch high? The Narration might be intense though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfsZtDqtuRY

Next some weird video. If I remember right the person behind this was a goon. I might be thinking of something else though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfsZtDqtuRY

This dude is probably my favorite Youtube channel. He posts bizarre stream of consciousness short stories with weird video art as a background. This one is probably my favorite:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2ua5Et43k4

Another dude on youtube doing weird little animated shorts with spoken word pieces:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLhSxfMETnU

This dude is probably most famous for a series of drama/horror/ shorts called INTERFACE, which is amazing and I should probably just post that too, but here's a weird little short he did:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLRy_5U7rF8

and here's episode one of INTERFACE. They're all pretty short, I think the longest is around 11 minutes or so, but they have a really distinct atmosphere and style that I really enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHqsCmfTDmI

Lastly closing out this post with one of my favorite claymation shorts of all time, Mark Osborne's MORE. An excellent soundtrack courtesy of New Order's "Elegia" (some gamer goons might recognize it as the song playing in the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain):

I'm pretty sure umami is most famous for Thomas the Thermonuclear Bomb which went kinda viral compared to his other work. I've been a fan for ages (I think the Hamburglar video is my favorite), and was excited to see something of his really take off.

legendary Czech stop motion man jan svankmajer made this really neat sort of mockumentary based on Horace Walpole’s very spooky The Castle of Otranto. Again I was unable to find an English subtitled version but it is one of my favorite short films, the documentary portion basically features a journalist investigating Otranto as if it were a real place, intercut with some nice cutout animation of the story itself.

I need to check this out. I'd like to find out more about Czech cinema and film. I think my mom's side of the family is from there. Also I'm pretty obsessed with the film Daisies. It's not short but it's up on YouTube. Unfortunately the English subtitles sometimes get hidden behind Spanish ones.

lol I’m gonna have to watch this, thanks.

idk what it is in the water over in czechia but in addition to svankmajer’s awesome work (his Alice in wonderland is amazing) they also have jiri barta, who made some fantastic stuff mostly in the medium of stop motion too. This is my favorite of his short films though, it speaks for itself.

This is probably my favorite video of all time. Chris Cunningham is an insanely good director:

Another neat music video. I really like the animation style on display here:

This is probably a bit on the long side, but a singer-songwriter by the name of Chad VanGaalen created a 25 minute sci-fi cartoon called TARBOZ and it's weird as hell and it owns. Pretty sure he did everything himself. Guy is insane. I like his music too. It's like indie-folk poo poo about aliens and robots. It owns.:
