Welp, looks like my degree in zoology was for nothing. Cute cat! I'm glad he likes the poop.

I skyped home and my gifts have arrived. Thank you, Santa! I'll open them when I get home.

Speaking of cats, I love this book cover's cat drawing (which is drawn by Grass himself I just found out).

"Text Classics"? That's The Plains by Gerald Murnane

Thanks Santa!

Thanks Santa!

The reviews for The Plains have put it on my too read list too--let me know how it goes!

A good buddy of mine absolutely loves that Grass series, hope you enjoy!

The Grey

My gift arrived yesterday! I opened it up to find a nice assortment of wrapped items.

They looked so good that I debated leaving them wrapped for a while and opening them closer to Christmas. Temptation got the better of me though, and I opened them all up. Each one was a fun surprise:

- CDs of "The Fall" by Dragnet and "Black Dance" by Klaus Schulze. I haven't heard of either before, but I brought them out to my car this morning for the commute to work. We had a snowstorm today, so listening to British punk rock made my slow drive go a little faster.

- "If Not Now, When?" by Primo Levi. Written by an Auswitz survivor, the true story of people trapped on the Eastern WWII front struggle to stay alive and sabotage the German army. It looks like a moving book.

- "The Street" by Ann Petry. The story of a young black woman raising her son in 1940's Harlem. I've been looking to broaden myself beyond my typical reading, and this will be a good one to help with that.

- "Capitalist Realism" by Mark Fisher and "American Socialism 1900 - 1960" by H. Wayne Morgan. Probably a relevant time to read these given how things have been going.

- A jar of special maple syrup from my Santa's relative. I make pancakes or waffles every weekend and am really looking forward to trying this!

Thanks for everything!

You're welcome! I'm glad they were timely; they had to ship from the US, and Amazon was quoting me the 18th for delivery, so I was a little concerned. Enjoy!

This arrived today! I'm pretty psyched; I loved Dark Entries, but I haven't had any luck tracking down more Aickman, and this looks like it's even more my kind of thing than Dark Entries was. Thank you so much, Book Barn Santa!

That was me! I didn't see space to add a message to go with the gift, but there shouldn't be any overlap with Dark Entries, and it's the NYRB Classics so they should be good stuff.

That's not all, there's two more coming. I'll tell you about those when they arrive!

Also, I've reached my parents' house and have not one but two packages waiting for me. Thank you, Santa - I'm looking forward to opening them, but I'll wait for Christmas for that.

Sorry for the delayed follow-up, Franchescanado; I've had a long week.

Great picks again. Zola is one of those authors that I overthink about where to start reading (I had been leaning toward L'Assommoir), so thanks for that kick in the pants. Not familiar with Gadda; looks badass. Impossible Owls has an essay on Soviet animation, which alone justifies my having it. Thank you!

You were quite a challenge to pick gifts for (since you've seemingly read every Russian novel I could pick), so I'm happy if you're happy! The Zola and Gadda are Lit Thread favorites, and Impossible Owls is an experimental collection of essays. I've listened to interviews with their author, and he's a funny weird dude. I look forward to reading any thoughts you have as you read through them. They're all kinda dense and long, as you requested, except for the Barthelme and Multiple Choice, so I hope you'll be busy for a while with them.

Merry Holidays!

My Secret Santa is like an advent calendar this year! The magical elves (Prime delivery guy) dropped off a second book, and I am beyond delighted as I have wanted to read it very much from reviews here.

After years wasted on bad scifi the good scifi book goons have recommended have so far all been great

Apparently one more is on its way, and I am very curious what it might be.

Didn't take a picture, but today a pocket volume of William Carlos William's poetry arrived! I'm excited to go deeper into his stuff -- I know and like his greatest-hits poems but haven't read much beyond that -- and the book itself is very cute and the perfect size to get tucked into a bag for trips. Thank you again, Santa Biscuits!

Double post to say merry Christmas to everyone and show off my presents:

Thanks a lot, SirSlarty, these look really interesting! The Silk Roads is about a fascinating slice of history and looks like sprawls over all kinds of subjects. Especially since it touches on the history behind Pax Pamir, which was one of my favourite games from last year. The Harmless People seems to be its opposite in scale and subject... Thanks for sharing a favourite!

Plus, free wine, so my parents are happy too.

I've had a package sitting at my house for 10? days, maybe more now and just haven't had time to open it, so a big apology to The Grey for this taking so long, but an even bigger thank you! Inside the package, everything was very nicely wrapped:

And now I have all these wonderful new books to read!

I've had multiple people recommend the Thief of Always to me, so that was a neat little surprise in there, but Made To Kill will be my first read, hopefully this weekend. These are all seriously awesome, thanks again!

The last (I've been told) of three gifts arrived a few days ago: a copy of The Sunday Sessions, compiled recordings of Philip Larkin reading his own poetry. This looks like very good listening from a poet I'm not very familiar with. Thanks a third time, Santa!

I read The Harmless People as part of the required reading list for a general studies class in college. I found it fascinating because American high schools do not teach this kind of stuff and it really opened my eyes to the varieties of ways how humans live.

The Plains is like an anthropology book and it ties in nicely with The Harmless People as a favorite book of mine. I read the first chapter and the passive-observer-yet-is-the-main-character voice (not sure how else to describe it) seems perfect for the subject matter. I'm really liking it so far. I'm really "with" the main character in his travels. Also, Australia is huge.

Probably won't get to Herr Grass until February.
