High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a mockumentary series on Disney+. At a fictionalized version of East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the High School Musical movies were filmed, a former background cast member, Miss Jenn begins work as the new drama teacher. The teacher decides to stage a performance of High School Musical: The Musical for her first winter theater production, to celebrate the school's affiliation with the original film. Our Cast: Olivia Rodrigo as Nini Salazar-Roberts as Gabriella Montez: Our lead. She played the back of a cow in Gypsy last year. After telling her boyfriend Ricky that she kinda y'know-ed him, he responded by suggesting they take a break. During this break, she found EJ and the two of them auditioned for the show in the hopes of both playing the lead. Unfortunately... Joshua Bassett as Ricky Bowen as Troy Bolton: Nini's ex-boyfriend. On the first day of school, he walked up to Nini expecting her to be happy to see him. Unfortunately for him, Nini met someone over the break, and in order to win her back, he sucks up his hatred of musicals to audition for this new Musical to try to play lead across from her. Matt Cornett as E.J. Caswell as Chad Danforth: Nini's boyfriend. Appears to genuinely appreciate musical theater. The two met at theater camp, though EJ has admitted to an interest in her since he saw her in Gypsy. Despite going all out for the role of Troy, he wound up as Ricky's understudy in the actual show. Sofia Wylie as Gina Porter as Taylor McKenna: Nini's primary rival. A new transfer student, Gina came in fully expecting to be cast as Gabriella, and now that she's the understudy, she has made it her goal to unseat Nini and take the leading role she rightfully earned. Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn: The drama teacher. She played one of the backup dancers in High School Musical, and her interest in theater brought her back to East High, where she is now staging a tribute to the musical that she was in. Reinders, a former Glinda, is channeling her best Kristin Chenoweth in the role, and the character of Miss Jenn is a pastiche of the overdramatic theater teacher that everyone had. The rest of the main cast, who I couldn't find glamour shots of: From Left to Right: Mark St. Cyr as Mr. Mazzara, East High's STEM teacher who is against the school's focus on the Arts. Gina Dara Reneé as Kourtney, Nini's best friend who is an outspoken feminist. Frankie Rodriguez as Carlos, the choreographer of the production. Has the best line of the pilot: "I've seen the original movie 37 times, and the first 15 minutes of both sequels." Nini Ricky Larry Saperstein as Big Red, Ricky's best friend. Julia Lester as Ashlyn Caswell as Ms. Darbus, E.J.'s cousin and an aspiring songwriter, who is cast as Ms. Darbus. E.J. Miss Jenn The show can be seen on Disney+. Freeform aired a preview of the first episode on 11/8, but the rest are Disney+ only. I'll be honest, I went into this expecting bad Glee, and wound up getting good Glee. If you liked the first 13 episodes of Glee you might like this show, so check it out!
