Wasn't the prevailing theory last year/2 years back that Jimmy G was supposed to fill that role and Kraft went and porked it up by trading him to SF?

Brady and Jimmy G both wanted Jimmy G off New England and have the same agent, so they went over Belichick's head and persuaded Kraft to trade Jimmy G by making the argument that they'd make it impossible - negotiation/cap wise - to keep both. Belichick wanted to find a way to keep Brady for another year or two and franchise/sign Jimmy G to a longer term contract.
