So what’re the odds that ByteDance divests itself of TikTok? If it refuses to, it does kind of prove Congress’s point

Right now they're claiming they will shut down instead of selling, which sure isn't supporting their argument that they're a legitimate and normal corporation that's just here for profit. But words are cheap, we'll see what they actually do. It is really funny seeing internet hammer and sickle avatar people going to bat for a giant tech corporation, almost worth it just for that. Apparently the "secret sauce" algorithm used by TikTok is also core to the operations of the parent company and their most profitable product: a news aggregation app that uses AI to show people clickbait articles.

the social media/ad-suppprted aspect of TikTok is money losing: the hope is in TikTok Shop taking off. And the bulk of the e-commerce arm's success is in Southeast Asia, not the US or Europe incorporating a subsidiary in the region a la Alibaba giving Lazada (its Singapore-based acquisition) a somewhat long leash wouldn't be shocking; one option for TikTok would be to leverage its existing stake in Tokopedia (based in Indonesia). This implies more deference to local regulations and moods rather than less: one reason TikTok deigned to partner with Tokopedia to begin with is because of Indonesian local regulations abruptly shutting down TikTok Shop with two week's notice previously. Within three months it opened talks with the Indonesian market leader Tokopedia. there's a Chinese e-commerce industry dysfunction in being way too interested in the soft side of the business - app engagement KPIs, etc. - and not sufficiently engaged in the grubby reality of setting up warehouses and logistics and return systems in developing countries with shaky infrastructure (e.g., relying on inhouse motorcycle couriers to get around nonexistent paved roads, lack of systematic addressing, labour force with limited literacy and especially no literacy in Chinese... ). Fulfilment centers are expensive and will occupy capex for a long while yet. Unlike the mainland, the local market will err on the side of less infrastructure rather than more. This is something of a familiar dysfunction (the Japanese megainvestment wave in its time also had a management cultural problem of desperately needing opportunities outside Japan and yet feeling like Southeast Asia is below it; in the end the successful Japanese outings were those that could wean themselves off a reliance on costly parachuted Japanese expatriates, not those that most preserved parent company culture).
